They are called "Stealerships" for a reason. I took my 213,000 mile 2005 Toyota Corolla to a Toyota Stealership to get an airbag replaced under recall. The technician told me I needed $7,500 worth of work on a $4,000 car! LOL. I maintain all my vehicles myself and knew that all the things he quoted were in good shape (my kids drive it from time to time, has to be SAFE!). Think of Grandma going in there though and approving the work!!

I bought a car about 8 years ago from a dealership and took it back 4 months later for an oil change and they told me I needed a new prop shaft (in an AWD vehicle that is the rear drive shaft)and it was unsafe to drive. Quoted me $3,500. I declined and never replaced it in the 5 years I owned the vehicle and had it inspected by a trusted shop before I traded it in and he said it was still good.

I had the same thing happen with a Subaru head gasket, and warped heads. For me to fix it $900 but if you took it to any shop mechanically totaled. If it had been just the gaskets $200. I bought the car for $2000 put $900 into it now it's worth $5000-$6000. Needless to say I shop for cheap Subarus with blown head gaskets now.

I believe it. My son had the check engine light come on with his Chevy Avalanche. My OBDII scanner indicated it was an air-intake sensor. Dealership (that my son worked for actually) addressed all kinds of issues to include breaking down the engine to replace a piston...WHAAAATT! It was close to a $8000 repair. Insane! Long story short, I consulted with my brother who is an auto mechanic remembered a service bulletin for this truck explaining the air-intake sensors go bad (hence my OBDII scanner was on the $$). We installed the $75 part, reset the check engine light. Bingo....that solved the problem. Check around people!

A friend of mine at work had an issue with her 4WD system on her Toyota 4Runner and the Toyota dealer quoted her over $5,000 to replace the transfer case. I recommend she take it to my independent mechanic and all it needed was servicing. He did the transfer case oil and both from and rear differentials an engine oil change and transmission service all for about $600. It’s been running smoothly since then (about 5 months ago). Not all dealers are bad but it sure seems like more are dishonest or just don’t know what they’re doing. They don’t have mechanics anymore, just parts jockeys.
@Plumber1111
@Plumber1111 Год назад
As a former mazda mechanic, dealerships train their young mechanics to be parts pushers. If you trained at a mom and pop shop like i was. Our goal was to solve the problem at the lowest possible cost to the customer. I would have done what rich did, identify the problem and see if you can get just that one part and not a whole assembly. It takes years to get the experience required to get those results. I am now a plumber and do one day boiler installs. And people always ask why i charge the same as if i did them in 3 days. You're paying for the professional experience and knowledge.

3:55 It's not that hard to be smarter than a dealer tech. I bought a 2004 VW Golf from a police impound for $800. The engine was locked up. I paid $2,600 to have another engine installed. The check engine light came on and the engine would not spin faster than 3,100 rpm. It had 5 codes. The VW dealer said I needed a new timing belt, water pump and tensioner. They wanted $2,048. I bought a wiring diagram and replaced a $17 temp sensor. All 5 codes are gone and the engine spin faster than 3,100 rpm.

Your relationship with Rich is completely different than anyone else. What normal mechanics do, is search a database that says to replace a part takes 7 hours and that's what they charge you, even if that job only takes 2. It's a coordinated scam across the industry. The only way anyone will get Rich's kind of service is to find a friend/relative that is willing to charge true time/cost for a job.

Toyota dealer quoted my friend a new ECU to fix his weird transmissions problem on his tundra. Turned out to be rodent damage of one of the wire harnesses which took all over half an hour to fix in the driveway. My uncles firebird was fixed for $5,000 back in 2001. It went in to the dealership for a simple oil change and they scared him into "repairs" the car never needed. Because of their scare tactics, he sold the firebird and never bought a GM product again. He's also never had a dealership touch his vehicles after that ever again. Dealers do a lot of emotional damage both in the purchase phase and the maintenance and repair phase.

I spent 2 decades as manager in car sales people traded cars in all the time with problems. i just bought 2007 LS 460 with 84000 miles perfect show room new one owner from private party all work lexus dealer. 2 weeks later I noticed no accelleration from start gave peddal not going. Maybe the seller thought the transmission was going out. I've worked on car a long time. All it needed was mass air flow sensors cleaned and 2 clogged air filters. Cost me $45 filters only I did the work done. Then I did not chect seat lumbar adjustment was out. Dealer charge part $3200 plus labor. I went on RU-vid man took motor out took motor apart contacted a seat manufacuurer in canada got the new grears free done for nothing. I got the gears free cool and will do the job when time permits. Bottom line people always think the dealer is always ripping off the customers when customer rip off dealers all the time but sometimes its just a small fix.

It's really not as much about dealership dishonesty or lack of skill- But more so that of overwhelming perverse incentives. Manufacturer warranty reimbursement rates are typically very low and almost never compensate for diagnosis, so there's an enormous incentive for the tech to simply do the job in the way that's easiest and most economical from that perspective. Steve Lehto has a great video out that addresses this issue- He settled 2 lemon law cases from 2 different owners on the SAME car. The manufacturer had replaced the top end (head) multiple times but never resolved the issue. It turned out that there was a defect in the casting of the bottom end (block) but it wasn't discovered because the manufacturer wouldn't authorize the diagnostic time needed under warranty. There's tons of other examples of this and it's a real issue that effects nearly everything we buy today.

I had a headlight fail inspection because it was slightly dimmer than the other one. They would fix it. It would cost 70 dollars plus the cost of the bulbs in addition to the 40 or so bucks it costs for the inspection. I said nah, I can do this myself, problem is if I leave I got to get reinspected. Still was cheaper to buy new headlight bulbs and replace them myself and get reinspected elsewhere. Thanks PA. >:(
