I learned the other week (and I'm a native Anglophone of 55 years) that "pair" does not necessarily represent "two things", even though that's the way the word is used now. An archaic meaning which now exists only as a relic in the case of scissors or trousers is: "a set of things which only has meaning as a whole". You can see this for more than two things in an archaic definition of a rosary (=beads for Catholics to use during prayer) as "a pair of beads". If you cut the string of a rosary you merely have beads falling on the floor. One piece of a pair of scissors or trousers doesn't have meaning except in relation to the other.
