I always wondered why wooden carts where the go to form of transportation in a world where dragons exist. Today I’ll be making something that makes a bit more sense. We’re building a war wagon, sorta.
There are two huge issues with the way transportation is handled when it comes to fantasy games. The first is making wagons out of something that can easily be destroyed by any type of flying creature. I mean look at this, cloth, cloth!! Their tripping. If I was in Skyrim or a place similar to that you could not pay me enough to travel in that.
The other issue is pulling those carts with what has to be dragon bate. If you’re goal was to catch these hands and fire than you have succeeded but also failed at being alive anymore. Luckily for you I have fixed both of these problems. One I’ll admit in a very lazy way.

Just a note, wooden carts would still be the most common form of transportation in a world where this cart exists. This would cost a fortune to make. Wooden carts are just the fastest, cheapest and readily available form of transportation for the common folk. I didn’t mentioned this once in the video….. my bad. I got carried away building a tank for my table.

I just got curious and looked up the density difference between pumice (which floats in water) vs wood and found that wood weighs more on the average than pumice. (Pumice is .25g/cc vs wood being .3g to .9g/cc) So it would be plausible that any Dwarven craftsman could carve out one of these from pumice and it would be lighter than a wooden one AND be fireproof. This has my mind racing on ideas!!!

Considering the size of it, the thing looks like there might be a lot of traversal issues, along with weight problems that would make it a problem. Any narrow or rougher terrain, or even inclines would be an issue due to the size of it. Perhaps something smaller, but still larger than a normal wagon. I've considered something like an extended enclosure around the front of a wagon to provide cover for the animals pulling it. Something inspired by some of the descriptions of the larger gather wagons from Pern where you can drop the enclosure to the ground, or raise it higher, or even retract parts of it, as different options...something that expands on the Vistani styled ones such as Van Richten and Esmerelda's wagon from Curse of Strahd.

In a previous campaign, my party had built a tank out of a hollowed out giant crab, but they quickly abandoned it because it was too big, heavy, and slow. Wooden carts might not be built for battle against dragons or other giant mythical beasts but they are more practical in most other cases. Maybe creating an indestructible giant beast of burden creates more problem than it solves, wouldn't the bad guys just train them to attack people? Don't get me wrong, your war wagon and giant tardigrade are really cool, but I don't think they are quite the solution. Might as well ride a Slaughterstone Behemoth or a Stone Juggernaut at that point.
@FrankyDCrafter
@FrankyDCrafter Год назад
I agree, there were many issues with cost alone. Not to mention the infrastructure for the roads would also have to be better because of the weight of this thing. I think this was a case of me wanting to build something and then trying to justify the build with faulty logic. It was a lot of fun still though. Hope you at least liked the video.

Why would wooden carts be the go-to for worlds with dragons? Maybe it has something to do with the fact that in many fantasy settings, dragons are hot-tempered, prideful beings who would have no interest in being transportation, and in most of the few settings where that isn't the case, they're rare and thus not practical transportation anyway. I mean, would you rather a reliable wooden vehicle, or a pissed off reptile that can melt your face at any time? I like you Franky, but you have a tendency to forget that your setting(s) and setting conversations are not automatically the same one(s) most other people use.
@FrankyDCrafter
@FrankyDCrafter Год назад
I really appreciated your comment. I think you bring up a great point that I wasn’t very clear on in my video. I get what you mean about my setting not being everyone’s setting. I used the wooden cart and the dragon more of as a joke to set up why I built this wagon the way I did. And even if this wasn’t intentionally made with dragons in mind, I feel like it would still protect better than a wooden cart against things like bandits. This doesn’t make this cart any less reliable than the wooden one. Where I would agree with you is that cost wise, this cart isn’t very practical. When we start to think about the material and the artistry that would go into it the price starts to skyrocket. I think it would be reserved for the higher class. While in the other hand, wooden carts would always be cheaper to make. It would make since that most of the carts that you would see out on roads would be those that are cheaper and easier to make. I wasn’t quite sure what you meant by “being transportation” but I’m assuming you meant to say dragons would have no interest in lesser being’s transportation. And in most cases I think you are right. But I think there would still be other creatures you want to be protected from. Giant bats, wyverns, drakes, roc monsters, and other things like that. But then again this wasn’t a point I made in the video and you have the right to point it out. I hope this doesn’t come off as a confrontational response. You just gave me a lot to think about, not only in the way I explain my world but also in the way I present my videos. I actually found your comment to be extremely helpful. Thank you.
@mattpace1026
@mattpace1026 Год назад
@@FrankyDCrafter Didn't come across as confrontational at all. In fact, I've switched from "like" to "respect." You make a lot of fair points. Edit: I'd also like to apologize, because the whole reason I made my comment was that I thought you were suggesting making a wagon pulled by dragons, before I actually watched the video and realized otherwise. Should not have done that, it was a douchebag move.
@FrankyDCrafter
@FrankyDCrafter Год назад
@@mattpace1026 I’ve learned that in life everyone always has something they are going through. I like to think that when I respond to comments I’m actually speaking to you in person. I like to have talks with people not arguments. I figure I misunderstood some of your points and was as generous as possible with what you were saying. Your comment was fine honestly, got me thinking more about presentation for the videos. It also made me write and pin a comment addressing the same points I brought up in our conversation because you got me thinking a lot about why wooden carts are the most common choice for transportation. It has nothing to do with dangers from the monsters that lurk in the shadows or the sky. It has to do with affordability. It was actually eye opening. 🤣 I feel slow for not thinking that through. If this was a more serious video, I could have ended up looking very foolish. Like I said, I do appreciate the comment, even if it was from a place of misunderstanding. And I’m glad we cleared it out.
