Hello Jenna, what a fun video! I adore your fearless approach. I'm actually the one who drafted this shacket pattern for Mood. I've collaborated with Mood on over 300 free patterns and still counting! Here are a few observations that might be helpful: [] The pattern is made for a woven fabric - your fabric was stretchy and bouncy, but you still made it work! I would suggest staystitching the neckline and curved hem edges to keep the shape. [] The front ends of the hem facing are meant to tuck under the button placket, so you will want to do the hem before you finish the placket. Don't feel bad - they didn't catch that in the Mood blog post either. ;) If desired, the hem facing can be omitted and you can just do a plain seam. [] I think you were right to skip the French seams - too bulky! [] I'm kicking myself for not including side-seam pockets, but it should be easy enough to add them by borrowing a pocket from another pattern, if desired. >>> Your final result looks really nice and cozy!

i’m a beginner and i’m loving working on this pattern i just can’t figure out how to sew the collar! can you help me out? i know Jenna said leave open the long side and attach the short but wouldn’t the side your leaving open be the one attaching?
@PaTTernHack
@PaTTernHack Год назад
@@emily.t11 So glad to hear you are ready to tackle sewing and get through the learning curve! For the collar, you sew the sides and top edge of the collar first. Then attach the one undercollar neckline to the shirt neckline with right-sides together. After that, neatly tuck under the SA's of the collar and topstitch in place.

Good to know that sometimes there are steps missing on the blog. I do have problems so many times sewing mood patterns because of that. They use to be so awesome and easy, only if mood doesn't give for sure that people knows every step... Thank you very much!

Tip for opening button holes from my sewing teacher. Place a pin across the edge that you are cutting towards. The quick-unpick can't cut through the pin so you'll not rip through the fabric😊

I have had luck with prewashing my fabric in the harshest way that may happen to it. I prewash in hot water and rinse (or wash until dye stops bleeding) before throwing in my laundry machine for a cycle. Once the garment is made then I only wash my clothes in tap cold water and air dry. That has always worked well for me and I haven't noticed any fabric shrinkage after a garment is made.

A good tip for adding sleeves, waistbands, etc. is the snip a little notch in the seam allowance and line them up with top of sleeve and the armhole. Hope this helps!

I think you had this extra space at the bottom facing because you decided on using the serger instead of the french seam method which was likely accounted for in the pattern. The french seam generally takes up another inch or so which is exactly the extra space you had!

Hi Loeka... Catina here from PatternHack (I'm the collaborator who drafts almost all of the Mood patterns). The front ends of the hem facing are supposed to tuck under the button placket. This reduces bulk and gives a clean finish.

Hi Grace! I drafted this pattern so I can give you a few tips. Try to choose a woven fabric as it will be easier to sew (and it is what the intended fabric is for this pattern. The hem facing actually is supposed to tuck under the button placket in the front corners - so you will do the hem before you topstitch the placket. You could also just skip the hem placket and do a regular hem. The fit is quite oversized (by design), so you don't have to worry much about a "perfect fit". I know you will do great!

Hi Jenna, here is a little tip when using a seam ripper to cut button holes. Put a pin in the end of button hole then seam ripper will only go that far and not rip any further. xxx PS Penelope has done a good job on the button holes.

The reason why your hem facings were too short is that they are not supposed to go all the way to the edge of the front opening. They are supposed to end tucked inside the front button placket. So when you sewed the front button plackets as your first step, you should leave the bottom few inches open. Then tuck the end of the hem facing into that placket and then sew the last few inches of placket down. This will reduce the bulk in the front center corners.
@PaTTernHack
@PaTTernHack 2 года назад
You are absolutely correct! I drafted this pattern for Mood and that is exactly what was intended for the hem facing. This way, it reduces bulk and gives a clean finish.

The ultimate trick of lining up serged seams(works best with serged seams), is to let the edges 'hug'. 1. Hold the two layers in your hand 2. fold the edge near to you to the left, fold the edge away from you to the right 3. Now a little 'edge' emerges because of the fold, both in opposite direction 4. press slightly both sides against eachother until you kinda feel the edges push aganst eachother. 5. pin it and just sew it with a few stitches with your sewing machine. 6. Pin the rest of your sleeve/whatever(I use this trick on lycra, works like a charm even with high stretch fabrics) 7. serge the rest of the hem.

So beautiful. It helps to get the collar to lay down, if the underside is slightly' 'smaller' than the top piece. smaller the short way, especially. Sometimes you even get two patterns. Especially for heavy fabrics. If that right side corner continues to stick up, you might consider picking away your sewing and re sew it by checking the curve, and then sewing it on, maybe by hand. Does that make any sense? lol

Nice shacket. I think the original pattern of the bottom trim is not wrong. You added a small piece to it, so it would fit over the whole length of the bottom. But the inseams of the two front parts are supposed to go full length from neckline to bottom and the bottom trim has to go under it. So the trim can be a little shorter (the width of the inseam minus 1 cm). Alternatively, but not often done with jackets, you can cut the bottom trim full width of the jacket and stich it 45 degrees angled to the front inseam.

For the hem facing, it looks like you’re supposed to sew it to the bottom of the front facing first, and fold the front edge with the hem facing attached to it inside out, then sew the hem and the the bottom of the facing in one continuous stitching. That probably didn’t make sense. Sorry! It’s hard to explain in words…
