When you have as many hobbies as I do, you take any excuse to bring them together into one project. So today we're chatting about a recent gamedev event that I took part in, with a bit of fibre crafting flair!
You can play and mock my "game" directly in your browser: teahands.itch.io/stitch-games
Enjoy that!

Somewhat off-piste video for this channel but you know me, I refuse to be contained by the rules of The Algorithm 😉 If gamedev is a whole new world for you, I hope you find this interesting! And if it's not, well, jam team jam team jam team 👀

The three points you make at 9:52-10:03 👏👏👏 That's gold for so many things in life. I started ballet at 47 (7 years ago). It's an expensive and time consuming hobby, and Again and again I questioned myself (or had others question me ) about Why I do it ...'because you'll never be a professional dancer' But I finally realized that the joy of dance is not just for those who have a shot at greatness or a career (or even a youtube channel). Joy comes in trying and pursuing and improving and even failing. It comes in the creating. It comes in watching other creators. I will never code a game (no interest in that kind of thing), but I enjoyed hearing you talk about coding a game. I will never do most of the crafts you show in your videos, but I will always watch your videos. Cuz Joy!

I so enjoy YOUR enthusiasm….You are a Great Cheerleader….that is why this 73 year old Happy Ager just LOVES seeing your inspiring and entertaining videos come up here in the PNW on this very gray and rainy day…..as I am not a “gamer” by choice (isn’t that what it’s called?)…..I was just told by my 13 year old GrandKiddo “ris”……refers to charismatic ( her mother had to Doctor it up for me a bit….as I guess it means thinking someone is cool…oh my that sounds dated…oh well….move on Sherry)……I will try to have my Kiddos try it….as I so want them to be willing to try areas of crafting like You…..I am babbling on but wishing You A Happy Easter….

Happy Easter to you too! Objectively, this is a terrible game and I've definitely made a lot better ones in the past. But sometimes it's just fun to tinker and not worry too much about the outcome, you know? If you ever decide to try gamedev I would have you on my jam team any day! 🥰

Maybe you could create a game with buttons (the kind you would sew on something) as either similar to a bubble popping game (buttons DO pop...mainly when I've had too much to eat around holidays and my girth gets too rotund for them to stay attached...kinda joking here, but then--sadly--kinda not) or as a match 3 game to match colors or button image shapes (Ladybug buttons, butterflies, traditional buttons, etc.). I really wouldn't say at all that your games are trash. I like to play games but I have no idea where to start with game dev, and I think you're doing an awesome job! I enjoy memory games, too, because it helps to keep sharp and remember details in other situations that may be important later, so they kind of act like mind training exercises. I love that you chose craft-related images for that because crafting is an interest, so it makes it more interesting too! I really like this! You do an amazing job, and I look forward to seemore! 😄

Brilliant vid. Can't comment on the standard of the games as I can barely even button mash, but rightly you should be very proud. On a similar vein, maaaaaaany years ago when I was picking my gcse's the school told me I shouldn't do history because I was better at geography (I'm really not), 2 years ago, I ambled out of a Russell group uni with a 2:1 in history and ancient history. Sort of a "they told her she couldn't, so she did" type thing

Yay! Made it here in the first 10min! Haven't done that in so long. XD This is a great vid and I highly appreciate how you encourage people to try new things and "keep making cool stuff" because it's so important to just try. Also, those are great games. The moth attack especially. One of my friends is always losing her mind about moths getting into her fabric hoards. I'm totally gonna recommend it to her. :D

Haha, well if she doesn't want to face her fear at least you can reassure her it's only for about 30 seconds of gameplay and then abruptly ends. Maybe it's a feature, not a bug? 😂

I LOVE the breadth of topics I get introduced to on your channel-this was so cool, and I think your game looks awesome! Your channel is the perfect balance for me between exposure to new crafts (discovered I love woodworking/carpentry last year, which I definitely consider crafting, and macrame to hang birdhouses I made, and who knows what’s next?), and showing detailed info about them for inquisitive minds. I also really appreciate the thoughtfulness that goes into your episodes. I’m on my fourth pair of socks in the past month-ish, after being convinced by your sock vlog why handmade really is so much better.🥰
@TheGiddyStitcher
@TheGiddyStitcher 2 месяца назад
Oh wow you are putting my sock knitting to absolute shame! Four in a month(ish)? I've just managed to finish the pair I started in January! YT is all about rewarding very narrow focus but that's just not me, and I'm glad to have met so many likeminded people here. Feels good to know there's always *someone* who will appreciate my nonsense 😄

@@TheGiddyStitcher I live for nonsense! Also, I don’t do moderation very well, so yeah, the goal is a week+1 at least worth of homemade socks ASAP lol, but happily, crafting seems to be a socially acceptable addiction☺️

Great! I'm going to have to move my 24Hocs I think. Or just accept I won't get anywhere close. Planning on visiting my son that weekend. Do some things in Madison before he moves the following week.

It's so true! This was probably one of my worse jam efforts, which I will definitely blame on being poorly for a lot of it, but mostly it was just that I really couldn't find the time. Still, the point of the jam was that even super smol projects can and should be celebrated, and I embraced that theme wholeheartedly with this one! 😅

I appreciate this content!! It's so easy to get wrapped up in 'is it Good or Not. Good = worthy, can be proud, Not = not allowed to enjoy, no proud' and lose sight of why we make in the first place. As someone who is both new to cross-stitch and trying to find the gumption to learn 'proper coding' this is coincidentally the perfect intersection of those two activities
@TheGiddyStitcher

You know, they're actually a great combo of hobbies because one works out your brain and is very logical, the other gives your brain a break and is colourful and artistic! Just...do take care of your eyes, neither coders nor cross stitchers are known for their amazing eyesight 😬 What programming language are you learning?

@@TheGiddyStitcher i do already have a case of 'gamer eye' from staring at screens for both job and hobbies most of the day and then also cross stitching, oops! Liberal use of eyedrops is recommended and quite helpful.. when one remembers to use them 💀 Currently re-learning visual scripting in Construct 2, hoping to eventually transition to Playmaker in Unity and then to C#

🤩🤩🤩 this is so very thrilling, how i sniffed you out!! 🤣 lemme explain : * i suddenly got into cross stitching, out of the blue, about two weeks ago. guess whose channel is the first and only i wanted to subscribe to (twice - the second video of yours i watched i was gonna subscribe, only to realize i already did). * my world : bf is a dev who's been an avid gamer his entire life, i have a disability but if and when i work, it's in i.t. tech... i could just tell there was something very lovable about you!😂 ❤❤❤ i am semi-mad at you though, 'cause now i feel like i'm GOING TO look into that style of game development of yours, but where the hell am i gonna fit it in my measly 24h days??? 😅😅😅 (i'm currently in a full-time i.t. training...) i've also been, so far, completely unable to stick to learning programming (mostly because i didn't have any ideas of what i would really love to do with it), so i'd love to give myselfie a chance to try again (hopefully this time with this new angle it will stick, i really need programming for scripting and automation, but those are quite boring... 🙄😞) if you could give me, firstly, the name of the type of game dev you dabble in, that would be really lovely and much appreciated, and if you could spare a piece of advice as to what my first technical step should be, that would be 😙👌 much love and many thanks for existing 😘 p.s. : i have yet to inspect your channel closely, but in case you've never done a video on how you ... basically divide your free time between your multiple hobbies, that could be an idea for a video, in case you are looking for ideas...

And I absolutely want to write a proper long answer to this but we're also leaving for a night away in like one hour and I haven't packed. Right. Sorry this is coming so late. Sometimes my brain goes into "no peopleing, no" mode and I just sort of hide away for a bit it's nothing personal! Been a stressful couple weeks 😬 Having something you actually want to make is 100% the way to go with learning this stuff. Back in the day I got started in webdev because our World of Warcraft guild needed a website, and I couldn't pay someone to make it so learned myself. Before long I was doing more complicated features for it and it turned into a whole career! I'm not sure if you have a particular language or anything in mind, some are more typically used for certain things to depending what you want to make it'd be wise to learn a particular one, but the thing with coding is it's more about concepts than syntax so once you can write code in language A, you can learn language B pretty easily. If you're looking into automation stuff I know Python is fairly popular for that. As for what "type" of game dev I dabble in. Er, not entirely sure what you mean. The "more enthusiasm than skill" type? The engine I'm using in this video is Godot and the language is GDScript (coincidentally very similar to Python), maybe that's what you meant? 😄 If you enjoy excruciating levels of detail on thought processes etc I've been doing devlogs about my main game over at youtube.com/@teahands Anyway I can't tell if you're the same "cross stitch and coding" person who joined the Discord shortly after this or not (different names, it can be very stressful working out who's who!) so if that is you, feel free to DM for further help and cheerleading etc. If it's not you, disregard, hopefully something in here was useful and not too late!

@@TheGiddyStitcher first of all, i feel like i need to appologize for the shortcomings of FREAKING RU-vid that no longer notifies when we get comments or replies to our comments on other people's channels - i was just done appologizing for missing things people wrote to me six months ago - oopsie! @@TheGiddyStitcher oh, i forgot : by the type of game dev i meant along the lines of "is it retro-gaming?", basically "what do i type in google to start finding info and tutorials". this is just to clear up the confusion, hopefully. you really don't need to answer this, i'll check out your other channel and go from there. :*
