I Made Conway's Game of Life with Minecraft Redstone!

John Conway's game of life is a 2D cellular automation. It plays by itself after the player creates an initial configuration. Making a singular redstone cell is all it takes to create this game, as long as it is stackable. After that, you can create Game of Life boards as big as you want!

since 4 fit perfectly in a chunk, you just need to make this a structure that spawns once every chunk, in the same spot every time, and you could probably make a superflat world auto generate infinite with this pattern. It might require a mod, but that would be insane.

if you could somehow make a version of this that can be pushed with pistons then it could be infinite, there is a flying machine in 1.12 that automatically duplicates itself and everything attached to it on a chunk by chunk basis

@@undefined06855 but infinitely repeating it isn't feasible since all the components have to be made manually, unless you're willing to use mods, datapacks, or commands, but imo that defeats the point of building the game of life without any of those

That's pretty neat, looks like a lot of effort went into making this... just wow! The complexity of the circuit reminds me of the game of life within the game of life. Interesting that as the number of cells grows you have to make the whole circuit thicker to make the extra connections.

I belive that this could be done woth the new sculk sensors and trapdoors, Mumbo Jumbo made a video exploring the new feature, and when he used this combo of blocks, he got some interesting results. The only problem are the rules.

This is amazing! I have a question: What is the mechanism for advancing all cells to the next timestep simultaneously? Is there a global clock that controls all of them, or does each cell have its own internal clock? If the latter is true, how do all those clocks get synchronized?

From closer inspection it’s one clock but it’s not synced The larger it is the more you can notice the non sync edit: ITS BEDROCK COMPATIBLE The only thing you need to change is the a T flip-flop due to it does not use Insta repeaters which is helpful as Matt said he does not want to use pistons nor observers but in this he had to use pistons so Insta repeaters do not exist in real life circuits everything has a delay it’s just hard to notice so he did not use them

My prototype takes up a whole chunk, could be squished down to about 10x10 or 8x8 pretty easily. The only problem is that it almost works perfectly. It passes a lot of simple tests. I'm worried that debugging it will be so hard that I'm be better off starting over. I can't exactly add print statements. OH I'm glad I said that! I'm going to add command blocks with /say for debugging.

I'm sure you've seen "life in life" how hard would it be to import the blueprint in minecraft using mcedit ? how many life² cells would fit in a minecraft world before running into rendering/engine limits ? I need this

You can avoid rendering limit with several people. Engine, as i know, have limitation on instant changes, but not on simple redstone stuff, so it will just slowing down.

@@BestHakase That's good to know ! I was also wondering if the scale of life² is just so big that not enough cells would fit within the bounds of the playable area. Not quite sure what happens beyond the mathematical worldborder, if redstone works etc. The minecraft cell being 8x8, the OTCA being 2048, means the M-OTCA would be 16384. That actually leaves plenty of room for thousands of cells on each axis.

1 AND X = X 0 OR X = X 0 AND X = 0 1 OR X = 1 That's about all there is too it.... The rest are combinations. And complex equations are either Sum of Products or Products of Sums. And with Truth Tables, Karnaugh Maps, and Implication Tables, you can simplify them to their least or simplest form. Yes there is the NOT, NAND, NOR, XOR & XNOR but they're easy too... other than NOT the rest are combinations of others and all gates can be constructed from NAND and NOR.
