Honestly relatable, I can do logical redstone forever as long as it doesn’t get too compact, but pistons scare me, you show me a double piston extender, my brain shuts off, it reminds me of how I love derivatives and could do them forever, but the second you pull out an integral, my brain shuts off, I think it’s the difference between being able to see the steps that lead up to it versus suddenly being introduced to a mechanic that has bonkers rules that you know why they exist, but not a clue on how to use them due to all the stupid edge cases and such, it’s similar to how two nots in their actual English use because it English actually assumes a third possible state, so it could be that the article is true, but it could also be a weird case in which it’s neither true nor false, and sometimes not just stops working, like in not this nor that being the same with or without the not

not really when you realise people expect you to be a hacker when you say you're a programmer. Same things, there's a lot of different branches: Game dev, web dev, AI devs, security devs, ... even within those type you can get people that are good at things and bad at others. For ex you could be good at gameplay dev but bad at communication between servers and clients. Even tho i would say that web devs are generally less competant than others as they rarely need advanced maths or optimisation algorythms unlike game devs and AI devs that need to make sure nothing takes too long to be processed or security devs that i only see as cracks.

for 12:37 - basically when the bottom piston finishes retracting the top one, the top one gets updated and because at that point in time the observer ia powering it, the top piston notices. So if you had the same setup but with more delay on the observer it wouldn't work as when the observer pulsed the top piston would have already been retracted and couldn't be updated to notice the observer (hope you understand)

I know the feeling so much man. I work on CPUs. I did my PhD on connecting multiple dies together. There are lots of parts even within that field of interconnects that I don't know much about, and there are whole parts of a modern processor I couldn't begin to design without looking up multiple guides first. People hear that you work in some field or belong to some "skill group" and assume you must know everything about it, but the reality is that almost everyone in those fields is so hyperspecialized that it takes a small army to design anything really complicated.

On Java there is a tiny bit of randomness in some cases - such as directional update order, but it's mostly deterministic. On Bedrock some things are random but some random things give the same random order every time...
@spitnight4998
@spitnight4998 4 месяца назад
Java does still have randomness but not in the same ways as bedrock edition. To quote Space Walker, "Bedrock edition is random throughout time while Java is random throughout space." Basically on java edition sometimes a contraption can be "locational" and only work in certain locations. Most of time locationality is caused by weird update order (usually relating to dust.)

Having seen your confidence in these contraptions, I'd like to issue a challenge. A vault style 3x3 that "swings" into the wall. Pull the 3x3 back, then shift to the side Then pull back 2x3 and shift to the side Lastly the 1x3, shift it to the side and the coridoor is open. Obviously. A much wider contraption. you wont fit this in a 9x3, but it would be a cool mechanism to see in action

Sometimes the really simple things end up being the hardest, and I'm glad it's not just me! I've done some pretty complex designs before - my latest creation being a bamboo/sugarcane farm which shuts various parts of itself off and locks all the hoppers when the bulk storage gets full to all but eliminate lag - but I've never made a piston door beyond a 2x2, and never even built a flying machine before :O This video is so humbling and I love you for it! I was doing redstone for about 2 years, when I realized that 50% of the community is still better than me. So I challenged myself, and built a 3x3 redstone door. Nowhere complex, very slow and takes about 30 seconds to open and 10 seconds to close because of timing problems. Than my friend joined, and wanted to joke with me, he put down a TNT and a flint and steel was in his hands... but his a.. put it ON AND ACTIVATED REDSTONE. So yeah, when that happened I than finally re-did half of it, and I was so happy. And than I tried making a 4x4 and to this day I still can NOT figure it out.

I think I will always remember my designing my first 3x3 piston doors. I mainly play on bedrock, so pistons are not the greatest to work with, but the slower and smoother pistons also make it incredibly satisfying when you perfectly optimize it to go as fast as possible.
@mbcommandnerd

Here’s a tip that will save you a lot of pain next time you attempt this: to build the double extender, just place an observer next to the top piston with the output facing up into a floor block. Then place a four-tick repeater under the observer pointing into the bottom piston. Give that repeater a short pulse (four ticks or less), and it’ll go up, grab the middle block, and retract. I’m not sure where I first discovered that design, but it’s tiny, and boy does it work well! EDIT: WAIT HOLY CRAP I TYPED THAT BEFORE WATCHING THE REST OF THE VIDEO…never mind; you got it!

12:16 I had to read the comment of another user (Gekos/Gekoloudios) to finally what I was missing to understand this. Steps with the same number happen at the same time. 1. When you first place down the block, the bottom observer notices and sends a pulse to the repeater. 2. As the repeater is powered, it directly powers the bottom piston which causes it to extend. 2. As the repeater is powered, the observer above it notices (as the bottom piston is extending) and sends a pulse to the block above it. 3. The block above, as it gets powered, powers the upper piston as it's getting in place next to it which causes it to extend. 4. The block then gets unpowered which also unpowers the upper piston which makes it retract the center block. 5. The repeater then unpowers itself because the 4-tick delay runs out and unpowers the bottom piston which causes it to retract the upper piston. 6. As the repeater unpowers itself, the observer above it notices and sends a pulse to the block above it which powers it. 6.5. Just as the bottom piston's "arm" reaches the upper piston, for a fraction of a second (probably 0 tick), the upper piston gets powered by the block next to it, but then immediately gets pulled by the bottom piston before it can do anything which freezes its powered state. 7. As the bottom piston finishes to retract the upper piston, it gets unfrozen in the powered state which causes it to extend. 8. As it becomes extended, it notices that it's not being powered anymore, so it unpowers itself and retracts the center block. N.B.: I'm not a game physics expert so I may be wrong, but this is how it seems to happen. Please correct me if I'm wrong 😅.
