Code Monkey in the original Doom when you pick up something, the screen tints for a brief moment? How would you implement that effect without overlaying an image over the whole screen?

XCOM is definitely a game I thought about recreating! I love the game and now that I know how to work with 3D levels and 2D sprites I think that's a design I can create

damn! u made it look sooo easy...u r sooo skillful... btw, imo, the most critical element of a fps game is the camera shake after each shot. and thats really hard to adjust to the right feel. For reference to what i meant, take a look at overwatch -> Mcree, that cam shake is priceless. i've played some cheesy fps game b4, and i can tell you, without the shake, the game felt like just a mouse clicking game.

I'd love to see a First person RPG Dungeon crawl game similar to things like Wizardry / Operencia, with perhaps some kinda "Character builder" to do things like select class / spells / distribute attributes

@@Zorrio normalized nav mesh with Heat map is the easiest way. But to add personallity to the zombies make their stats normalized and dynamic with any reuseable heatmap & pathing finding code snippets for future games.

Sincerely it wouldn't be hard to create the systems necessary for something like this. Now, balancing and eventing would be a whole different beast, together with maps and everything, it would take a lot of WORK, not it wouldn't be hard as in undoable. You need to know how to handle enemy AI, which isn't hard for zombies, and how to create cadence for each wave. The shop system would probably be the hardest thing to do, but as with everything, there's always a simpler way.

Since you were able to reuse code from multiple projects, how long did it take you to make this? I'd be very interested in pitting a stopwatch against your creation process for the fun of it.

Code Monkey, i have a question for you. You always develop topdown and tycoon or microcontrol-ish games (İ mean commercially). Why do you do like that ? Did you played lots of games which were topdown like zelda ? Or Do you love topdown games ? Or You just think that topdown game are the best game genre which a single developer can handle best ? And another question : Do you think that a single developer have to master at a certain genre or have to develop with every genres. i've asked that question because nowadays i have been developing a tower defense game but i don't like these games. İ just develop it to be a better developer. Is it a true way to be a better developer ? And finally, i want to thank you because you have awesome videos and every comment you make below my comments encourages me. I want to be a game developer like you. I think it is the best job for me because i love games and i've grown up with games then i met coding and i realised that it is very fun and good because it makes you always think ( i love puzzles and legos ,too). You are the person that i want to be when i grow up. Keep doing this job.

I've made lots of tycoons because it's a genre I really like. I spent most of my childhood playing Theme Hospital, RollerCoaster Tycoon, Constructor, etc, so I love it. Top Down is also a perspective I really like while also being relatively easy to draw. But it's not the only way, some people adore platformers so doing a Side-Scroller is also a very valid perspective for an indie. Doing various genres is a good learning experience to grow as a developer but to find success you need to work on something you like. So working on a Tower Defense will give you knowledge and experience which you can then use to work on another genre you like more and make that great. Thanks! I'm glad you found the videos helpful!

I would love to work on my own game. My biggest "fear" is the lack of artistic skills. I can write code but i cant draw a tree so save my life. Ps is way expensive that i can even consider using it. Great work on your vids!

Keep the artstyle as simple and minimalist as possible, make sure the core of the game is based on the mechanics and make those as good as possible. Best of luck!

Have The Same Problem here but Instead I just go for it, I will suggest to not let your fear of art let you not start your game just go for spending some time in programming that for the art first place placeholder assets and then later when all the mechanics are done just look for assets outside like unity asset store or anywhere else, it will bring you somewhere. Game architecture is definitely a topic I'd like to cover but haven't yet found a good way to present it. So many things are so dependent on the specific game you're making it's tough to come up with general advice.

It's using a BoxCast, so instead of a ray it tests for an entire box area. Check the project files

Pardon my ignorance, but isn’t the biggest thing about early 90s FPS games is that they’re Pseudo 3D? It seems to me that you’re just making some objects as 2D sprites but you’re editing the game and building the levels in 3D

Yes the level is 3D and the objects are 2D just like in DOOM. What is different from what you call Pseudo 3D?

@@CodeMonkeyUnity Original Doom was not 3D in the way that the games are being built today. For example, there's a reason you couldn't look up or down, you know. It wasn't a design choice. Because since 2D images are being rendered in a way that makes us think it's 3D, when you looked up or down the images would get distorted. The maps are actually top down, and rendered on a 2D plane. That's why two rooms are never on top of each other. It would be really complicated for the developers. So, to be put that very simply, it's 2D levels on a 3D space making use of Z axis. Another thing that I see that is lacking from your video is the images' rotation. Doom calculates camera rotation and the sprites' position, and changes the sprites so that they give you the illusion of being viewed from another angle. One last thing: Doom had auto aim which allowed for enemies to be on grounds that are higher than the player, but the player could still shoot them if they aligned the X axis properly. I'm gonna take a guess and say that you knew that already, and that's why there aren't any enemies on different heights in your game, which makes it more like Wolfenstein 3D and not Doom. I hope you take these as constructive criticism for your next videos. Best of luck & keep up the good work. Also PS, some / most of the stuff I listed might be flawed, since what doom did back in the 90s was the absolute peak of video game technology at the time, and it is a very complicated technology. But I really disagree with the statement that doom is just 3d levels & 2d sprites. There's much, much more going on in there.

I would REALLY like to see 2D action RPG (like A Link to the Past) with being able to jump up/down cliffs and walking over bridges that you can walk underneath. This seems to be a common question that no solid solution has been implemented for Unity. Bonus points if there's AI that can at least aggro to the player. Please do this!

I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on making proper ai for fps games. Like when an enemy spots you he calls everyone in range and searches the area if he loses sight. Most people just do zombie ai ☹

You mean different sprites when looking at the side of the enemy? You can keep track of the enemies forward vector, then calculate the angle towards the player and use that to choose which sprite to use, front or side. If you're talking about how they did the actual graphics, in Unity it's likely a world space canvas with a fancy UI, for a more text based version like fallout you could for example just have a black panel as the background on the world canvas, some coloured UI text and then place on the surface of the model where the screen should be. In order to interact with it you would then have a raycast fire at the monitor model itself and then have some sort of transition to whatever UI you've come up with but that's more down to how you want your game to be. As for the actual hacking mechanic, it really is just a puzzle game with some random chance thrown in, nothing fancy.

The movement seem a little stiff. I went and played Doom 2 to look at the controls and it's quite different but some parts are right. If you stop your input you glide and slowly decelerate. But if you move forward then backwards you almost instantly move back but there's a little feel of thrust from from forward to backwards. When moving from nothing you have a small instant speed applied which increases over time giving you some instant precise control but not near as instant as here. Though that's nitpicking and a little annoying to program, just the subtle details that makes the entire movement of Doom. Otherwise the mechanics and wobbling is the exact same.
