In this video I make the dye NileBlue, after which the famous RU-vid channel is named.
I start from 3-(diethylamino)phenol, which I nitrosate with nitrous acid. The nitroso compound is then condensed with 1-aminonaphtalene, forming the phenoxazine ring of NileBlue. Finally I demonstrated some of its cool properties like pH color dependance, solvatochromism and fluorescence in 27 different solvents.

@@Hexazine0 I've read that Nile Blue was first synthesized by the Ancient Egyptians like 6000 years ago. not sure if that is true or not. Apparently the Egyptians used to make Nitric Acid and other chemicals I forgot the names of. Not sure about those. Geoffry Drumm has some very interesting theories. What I am certain of is Egypt was noteworthy for its production of cosmetics. Egyptian eyeliner was always highly sought after in the ancient world.

Thank you for the video. Solvatochromics have always interested me and are pretty cool. You should do a brookers merocyanine synthesis, it would be pretty nice!

Great movie, however... You were using one of the nastiest organic compounds. Naphthylamine is so carcinogenic that it has been discontinued

Best way will be with ethanol under high pressure. Diethyl carbonate will probably also work.

HCl is pretty safe when diluting small amounts. H2SO4 is another story.
