Hi friends! Here was my experiment making spats using a pattern I made out of plastic wrap!
Several people on Instagram commented that stabilizing the pattern with masking tape once you had it wrapped made it easier to handle. I didn't try that but it may help if you find your pattern is stretching/distorting when you're trying to cut it off.
The shoes are "Bernadettes" from American Duchess: www.americanduchess.com/colle...
The wool, buttons, linen tape, and hooks & eyes all came from Burnley and Trowbridge: burnleyandtrowbridge.com/

I made my spats with similar technique (I put duct tape over the cling film to stop it falling apart). Drawing that back seam line is so hard to do without help.

Several people recommended masking tape as well which would have been helpful! Also another person to draw lines for me 😁

I was going to suggest tape over the Saran Wrap, but I see others already have. I’ve used a similar method to make body blocks, before. The spats turned out so cute!! I’m not surprised, because everything you put on RU-vid is awesome! Glad to see you back. I always learn something from your videos, and it’s lovely to have positive content to watch. You’ve been missed.

This is actually insanely helpful. I recently made something similar for a costume. I used some newspaper taped together instead of plastic wrap and it worked pretty much the same. But knowing that someone else used this same sort of method has really helped me forget about any doubt I may have had over my method. Still mine weren't all that well fitted and left some things to be desired. I definitely should've used hook and eyes instead of velcro (it was a costume so I thought it wouldn't matter, but it did). I do need to make more for a next costume so thank you so much for this tutorial. The outcome of your spats is so beautiful!

Thank you so much for sharing this project. It was very much enjoyed. But Im gonna put this out there for those looking to try this. Would highly recommend you pick up a pair of bandage scissors as this is exactly the sort of thing they were made for. Much less risk of cutting yourself or whatever your wearing underneath including the shoes. Also useful just to have around for actual medical purposes and when sewing projects crop up where you need to cut something away without risking whats under nether. Like this.

Thanks for putting this out! Great timing right before Halloween :-) I am thinking about using this method to create some "boots" for my hubby. I don't want to spend $200 on some 1750s-appropriate boots for him to almost never wear, but I could use this method to make some shoe covers that look pretty cool.

I’m considering making myself some, if only to try to get the two toned boot look that I love- so the closure would be buttons on the outer side. But I have no idea what material to use. I’d want something I could wear year round (and it gets very hot where I am), so I don’t think wool would be a good choice, but linen wouldn’t have enough body. Maybe an interlined linen?
@DamesalaMode
@DamesalaMode 2 года назад
Maybe try finding a cotton canvas? That's usually got really good body and may work well!
@DamesalaMode
@DamesalaMode 2 года назад
Also I just checked Burnley and Trowbridge and they have some heavy linen canvas which might work, too!

Applying masking tape over the plastic wrap would make your pattern more stable, and easier to write on.
@az_twist6267

Using plastic wrap was genius! I’m wondering about trying it for a corset…
@DamesalaMode
@DamesalaMode 2 года назад
Someone commented on my instagram when I was making these that they used this method to make a swiss waist, so corsetry-adjacent stuff is definitely on the table. I would definitely recommend overlaying maybe the whole thing with masking tape or something to give it more stabilization, because just the plastic wrap alone was very stretchy and wobbly, so for something as big as a corset I'm sure that would just increase exponentially. But I think it's possible, at least to get a basic body shape that you can play with!
