How easy is it to hide daggers in your ballgown a la everyone's dark royalcore TikTok fantasies? This video is (fortunately) sponsored by Brilliant, so demonetisation Has No Power Over Us, mwahaha. Get 20% off here: brilliant.org/jillbearup
I accidentally bought the Perfect Murder Dress on eBay for £5, so let's commit some sewing and allow the denizens of BookTok to vicariously live out their Hot Enemy Threatening fantasies.

I love how a lot of older women's fashions are actually really good to fight in, or hide entire swords or knives or other weapons in. Like poofy hoop skirts are really good at hiding your legs from the enemy, so they don't know what your next move is, and you have tons of room. Corsets can also protect you from being stabbed. Big, fancy dresses can also hide several knives or a sword.

@scorpioneldar
@scorpioneldar 3 года назад
@@crowleycornix1569 at least the common styles of courtly fencing in England France and Spain revolved primarily around advance and retreat. You NEVER jump in a Duel with a sword almost irrespective of style. losing contact with the ground with both feet is almost instant death. you cannot change position in the air, control your speed, or even deliver a decent penetrating strike(no leverage) you give a free shot at a predictable target if both feet leave the ground. and an experienced fighter only needs a 10th of a second to take advantage of. not even if someone is going to take you out at the knee. retreat, deflect, parry, or even step into the blade (to rob power from the strike if you have decent protection) don't jump. if you do clear it they can shoulder tackle you and finish you assuming they cannot recover the blade fast enough to skewer you in the air. In courtly fencing (like with a rapier.) parry, Riposte, and deflection are all more valued than dodging. even in a fairly restrictive outfit you could participate in a conventional fencing duel. and an elizibathen gown would not restrict your feet very much at all. with some minor modification removing restrictions on the arms and feet that are there would not be hard.

@@SonsOfLorgar funny you should mention that, when I was studying the period dress of the commoners in the westward expansion (I can't remember why I was studying it nor for what reason i think I was trying to prove a point about how stupid modern women's fashion was to my fellow men) I remarked "you could fit batman's toolbelt and the kitchen sink under that!" Years later when doing exoskeleton stuff I realized that due to the shape of women's hips, and with the correct rigid supports, it's much easier for women to carry things around their hips than for men. This led to the redesign of some straps on an exoskeleton, weight redistribution, and an alternate battery arrangement. The result was MUCH better in terms of ergonomics.
@SonsOfLorgar
@SonsOfLorgar 3 года назад
@@inventor121 now that's how to do pockets, build a powered exoskeleton to support *more of them and bigger ones* I recall one time during conscript training when I arrived in the mess hall and dropped the jaws of my squad mates by pulling out a 0.8L (internal vol) steel thermos flask and a D3 maglite from the same uniform chest pocket... it barely showed on the jacket. Similiarly, a few years later, same uniform system, on a militia exercise, I couldn't find my smart phone I knew I had put in one of the jacket chest pockets. I had a platoon mate call me, and found it as my phone buzzed... turned out, those front pockets has no real pocket seams, they are only defined by the seams for the inner lining waist chord channel, the side seams joining the front and back, the seams around the sleeves and the shoulder seam... My phone had lodged itself in the part of the pocket that extended up over my left collar bone...

For the record the UK does have a fair use defence when it comes to carrying knives, so if you can convince the police you're say going fishing in the murder dress you'd probably be fine. The technical wording of the law is 'with good reason' and re-enactment, theatrics and artistic licence is one of the recognised defences for the legal carrying of knives. I actually think Jill would have a solid legal defence so long as she was behaving within reason. Still generally best not to tempt fate.
@Strawberry92fs
@Strawberry92fs 3 года назад
I always thought it was weird how in Canada and the UK you had to find some sort of not-self-defence reason that you'd be carrying a self-defence weapon.Does the UK just not have any bad neighbourhoods someone might have to walk through where it would be reasonable to have a weapon to ward off being jumped? Like in most situations if someone comes at you with knife, brandishing your knife is enough to get them to back down.Because it isn't worth it to get into a knife fight to steal someone's wallet.

@matthewmcneany
@matthewmcneany 3 года назад
@@Strawberry92fs UK law (can't speak to Canada) basically makes carrying any weapons a crime, and no, we don't really have any parts of the country where the streets aren't safe enough to walk. There is street crime (muggings random assaults) but they're very few and far between ('muggings' - which is what we would call those sorts of theft from a person are about 20,000 in a country of 65 million people) and a similar number of assaults with knives. Even dismissing the fact that only some of these will be randomly directed you're still looking at 1 in 3,000 chance for an individual in any given year. Carrying a weapon can also be seen as pre-meditation in any more serious crimes like if you kill someone with a weapon there would be an assumption that it's a case of murder rather than manslaughter (i.e. 1st rather than 3rd degree murder in US parlance). There's just a very different culture when it comes to weapons in the UK. And without wanting to get into the morality of self-defence for an individual on a national statistical level it does lead to way fewer deaths to treat weapons this way rather than the way the US does.

@@Rebecca_Violet well, the miniguns are attached to the hoop skirt, and actually come out through openings on the gown. The gown is also pretty big, somewhat bigger than a few gypsy wedding dresses, and has armor with a scale-pattern, and a design similar to peacock tail feathers. Also, bone (possibly whalebone or ivory) should do, at least against bare skin (such as throat). Not sure about clothing, though - especially corsets are gonna be tough. On the other hand, if you're allowed a metal corset or something, you can probably hide a metal knife too. Underneath it, if necessary, so it'd stay hidden even if you'd got x-rayed (which could be possible in certain settings e.g. before the discovery of radiation health hazards).

@Jill Bearup : Depending on how sharp, long or tight your dress is (I know what I said) I personally always felt a back-dagger or "Bumdagger" more mechanical. If the dress is not tight fitting, or if there is a structure like a corsette underneath where people are expecting to see "Stuff" attach the sheath at a 45deg angle on your back, with the hilt of the dagger resting on the back of your hip. secure the blade to the sheath with a little bow if necessary. Put the slit false-pocket at waist height, you reach behind you instead of down your leg then pull the blade out sideways.

I’m thinking the best eras to hide knives would be rococo with the massive pocket panniers (you could fit entire live chickens in those things, which just makes me even more sad about the state of women’s pockets these days. We had it so good! And then it all went away!). Or, I’m thinking bustle era with the over skirts are good- you could make a knife pocket in the underskirt, and easily be able to reach under the over skirt to get it. Or any of the really poofy skirt eras- the 1830s to 1860s obviously have very big skirts, but because they are also cartridge pleated, it makes it really easy to hide pocket openings. And even the 1890s have plentiful pockets in the skirts. It’s really only Regency and modern (as in from about WWI to now) that’s an issue. Also, I’m super sad about our modern lack of pockets now, given how huge they used to be- all the way up to the Edwardian period. I did make myself a pair of 18th century tie on pockets though, and I’ve been enjoying them immensely!

A dagger strapped to your forearm would, I think, be quicker on the draw with less of a tell. This requires sleeves, but sleeves and gloves would not be bad things to have in a knife fight. Two things I learned about knife fighting from an expert: 1. Once you draw the dagger, kill your opponent immediately, because your opponent will have to assume that you are going to kill them with your dagger. This fits in with Salvador Fabris's advice on fencing: no posing, no threatening, just stabbing. 2. In a knife fight, one person goes to the hospital, and that's the winner. Expect to be wounded. Have you considered a stiletto in a folding fan?

In my practical experience, usually the guy with the knife gets a beating...and then I go for stitches....BUT sometimes I have NOT been cut. I read Bruce Lee (before I ever heard of Salvatore) And when asked what the first thing to do if your enemy has a knife he said, like you, expect to get cut. When you accept it as a foregone conclusion, that helps you ignore the anxiety and fear...and the wishing it weren't so . Thus you can focus on minimizing the damage (scars on forearms instead of torso). You think to mount attacks instead of just being defensive...and sometimes you can even escape unscathed. (But don't count on it.)

Regarding bodice daggers: a corset/pair of stays without a separated busk (something pre-1850) could easily be modified with a sheath running down the busk. You'd have to be careful to position said sheath so that you didn't cut yourself while removing your knife. In theory, the length of your knife would be limited only by your busk length, so you could probably fit something ten or eleven inches long. Personally I think the thigh sheath is a little more elegant, but the corset busk sheath might be more secure.
