Beautiful work as usual Chris! Bartering for your service is a mutually beneficial arrangement and how things should be done between friends with different professional skills / resources. Can't wait to see what future projects you come up with to use those "off-cuts"!

Whilst I agree 100%, unfortunately the government still want their share in tax, even when it’s a barter.

Bartering existed long before anyone ever conceived of something called "money". If you're a small business working for other small businesses, bartering goods and services is a terrific practice that can bring you far more value than simple cash transactions. Beautiful work, as always.

I bartered throughout my professional career and now that I'm retired I still do it with my friends. We don't get it done as fast as we use to but it's done right and we keep our $$ in our pockets. With times being what they are right now every bit helps. Great work!

These signs look fantastic. For the second one, to help with the inlay filling, after you seal the surface but before you put it in the CNC for carving, cover the surface with stencil film. I like Oramask from Oracal. Leave the stencil when applying the epoxy inlay and pull once done.

I was a network / desktop support person for about 20 years before I moved over into software engineering. I found a chiropractor in Portland, OR that I really liked and he needed a lot of computer help. I was his "on-call" tech support for him and everyone in his office and got free chiropractic and massage therapy for several years. It worked out great and neither of us had to tell the IRS. 🤓

I used to manage a pizza place. I traded pizza for eye exams and got my glasses at a huge discount. Got some free oil changes. I did a 50% off for an order to feed the staff in a high end steak house and would get free reservations, drinks and our meal for Valentine's Day and New Years Eve. Bartering is awesome!

I know this is an older video, so hope you still read comments/questions. Love the faux wood idea. I have a lot of black walnut I'd like to "stretch out" like that. One question... I noticed you pin nailed the wood down w/glue. how did you manage to not hit any pins with your router bits? I can see the surfacing bit passing above if the pins are recessed a little, but the v carve would surely hit a few, IMO.
@AGlimpseInside

I have specific router bits. I use for stuff like that in case they’re going to get hit. You know like a cheap set from Harbor freight or something. So I don’t really try to avoid them. I just try to avoid using the good tools. Thanks for watching brother.

Have to mention: your offered product or service must be of a high quality and reputable to barter and not offend the professional you're trading with. Don't low ball with your work like you wouldn't low ball offering them less for their service/product. Like you said mutually beneficial arrangements. Ps gorgeous work, the wood pattern made my brain happy looking at it lol..

Trade and barter is a great way to get things done. Best part is the lack of taxes!!! Very little if any out of pocket expenses and both parties get a good deal. Who could ask for more!
@truckguy6666

I stopped bartering because I was always getting hosed on the receiving end. I always go above and beyond with regular work, let alone with bartering/friends and boy when its time to reciprocate, people think their time and product is WAYYYY more valuable than mine. It's so bad I have stopped bartering altogether. Now you pay what I'd charge anyone else. Sucks to have to be a d!ck about it but thats just the reality.

without the clear skim coat, a dark resin color (especially black) can bleed into a more open grain wood like oak as well. I like to run a bead of clear caulk to act as a dam, I'm always worried I'll over pour or my piece isn't level and it will run off
@barthrh2

First of all, great looking signs! You mentioned using the 60 deg V for the woodworker's sign. Did you use a flat end mill for rough of the large areas out first, or did you let the 60 deg V do the whole thing?
@LKMKully
@LKMKully Год назад
Question: Once you pour in the resin, so that it over fills the pockets & dries, you take to your CNC to flatten it. After that, you give it a sanding. Does your varnish, laquer actually make the resin shine? I know sanding the resin leaves it white & chaulky. Will any finish make it shiney? Great job!!!!!! Thanks Cheers

Just FYI, Ipé and Mahogany are not the same thing. African Mahogany isn't even mahogany (it's a different species entirely), but that's another story. Ipé is from Brazil, South America. It is an extremely dense and almost waterproof wood, that if it weren't for its high weight, would be extremely useful for outdoor furniture, but instead is mostly used in making decks since it's basically impervious to water. It's oily and hard to finish and because it is so dense, quickly dulls tools (e.g. saw blades). It doesn't glue or take stain well and is super expensive.

This is really creative. I am new to all of this and this video gives me some ideas to try. One question - I noticed you were using brad nails, are those okay to run a surfacing bit over? I am assuming that’s okay but was curious how that worked.
@AGlimpseInside
@AGlimpseInside 7 месяцев назад
Honestly, not really. Pin nails are OK but anytime you hit metal and metal it’s probably not the best thing. So there is a gun that shoots composite/plastic nails. If you search online composite Brad nailer you’ll come up with it. I believe the brand I’m using is called OMER.

If it's Ipa you would know, it's one of the hardest and heaviest woods in the world and very, very hard on your cutting tools. I would never run it through a planer. I have banned its use where I teach furniture making. Mahogany for the most part is more in the cherry range for hardness. They use Ipa as deck material a lot. Terrible wood to work with. Beautiful sign work.

I backed it up twice to be sure and yes, I think that's what you said! So now I just gotta know, did you ever decorate cookies with royal icing? Or get into cake decorating as a bakery manager? I do CNC signs, but not with resin inlay. My technique is a bit different, but makes for an easy finish process. I first dimension the sign, and sand it. Then I coat it with clear gloss, sanding (220-320-400g) level and do that until I have a flat finish. Then, I cut the sign lettering. I can then paint each letter whatever color, and be almost as sloppy as I want. The gloss allows quick wipe up of any mistakes. Once I get the letters to the desired look, I sand with 400grit just enough to remove any color haze, and put a cloudy finish on the gloss. I re-coat with gloss or matte until satisfied. This eliminates bare wood taking finish, masking, etc. I think this may work for your epoxy method as well. On the woodworking sign, I'd probably have done the whole sign in the clear resin, just like I do mine in gloss clear. Just suggestion, and info for those not wanting to mess with epoxy resin. All sorts of methods to get to the result. Love the signs!
