I'm in total agreement with everyone: "I make a new one" brings a smile to my face. It's not just that you are so good at creating new parts (which you are), the fun you have making new parts comes through and includes us all. Thanks for that compilation. It was fun!

Ah yes! The beautiful Beverly Shears in a "cutting edge" recurring role. You should check out her IMDB webpage ;-) To me, the fact that he actually uses the tools that he rescues and restores are further proof that he is a dedicated and talented machinist. It just goes against the grain to let them sit on a shelf as eye candy. Tools are meant to be used. Good tools need to be cherished. I swear I could put this on a continuous loop as a sort of visual ASMR.

Hello, I have a big request, make an episode about calculations, drawings and sketches, how you do it all, that all replacement parts are identical to the original. This is so interesting. Besides, I love to watch your episodes from start to finish :)

Great idea ! Language barriers may be an issue , Americans have a strong allergy to the metric system. lt makes us break out in tears .😂
@andrewclarkehomeimprovement
@@richardpalmer6196 as do imperial measurements over this side of the pond. 15/64"!!! You would sure find it easier where everything divides by 10 instead of 16, 32 and 64. 1000kg of water occupies 1m³ and is 1000litres, how easy do you want it!

I adore the fact that you restore the part just to show us you are not going to use it. Also what other restoration youtubers do after sandblasting is just puts a pain on and call it done. You say "now lets start restoring this part".. and this is what really sets you apart. You do a great job!

Those were the most satisfying moments in your videos when it started off as a scrap of metal then like magic it becomes a new immaculately made bolt/but/washer/pin/rivet/or even a new lever! Back in the day when I made internal threads on the good o'le Colchester lathe, I would mount the tap in the tailstock, push it gently against the workpiece and rotate the chuck by hand for the first couple of turns. That way I was absolutely sure the tap would go all the way in at the correct angle when I switched to the tap handle for better feel. For external threads, I would do just about what you did, but without the drill chuck in the tailstock (might have used a morse cone, don't remember). For parts that didn't fit in the lathe, I would just use the drill press instead, and again, turn the chuck by hand the first couple of turns, remove the workpiece from the drill press and finish by hand.

@richardpalmer6196
@richardpalmer6196 3 года назад
These short teaching posts are wonderful . l have done some sheet metal forming by spinning and with proper backing forms you can make a few things you may never otherwise find replacements for . This also applies to being able to form special purpose fasteners. This demonstrates the prime difference between a repairman and a craftsman. Both can be trained , but a craftsman creates . Repairmen have ability , craftsmen have ability and the talent to innovate.

You can blend in that solder seam on the copper plate for the scale using a "bright copper" patina for stained glass work. You can either buy the patina pre-made, or you can make your own from copper sulfate, distilled water, and dilute sulfuric acid. Just brush it on and rinse it off - it electroplates lead (or steel) without an external current source.

omg I am so gonna use that trick at 2:10 ! polishing the edge of a straightedge what a genius idea Edit: also, my mechanics, could you perhaps add the types of steel you are using for each project? like I wonder what kind of steel would fit as a handle for a vise, I'd love to know! Edit2: also, my mechanics please try and find a wood lathe to restore! that way you could mount a collet chuck on that! preventing the sanding dust from ruining the ways on the metal lathe :)
