Making Power Hammer Dies for 'Black Beard Projects' - with Lock Mechanism

In this video I'm going to make new poer hammer dies for 'Black Beard Projects'.
He asked me if I can make him a pair of new dies for his new power hammer to make damascus. We decided to make them out of 1.2344 (H13) steel, which is perfect for this kind of application. It's heat treatable and will be perfect to use with high temperatures when forging steel. The top die also has a lock mechanism included so the key can't fall out if it should come loose while working and destroy the piston. The heat treatment and especially the tempering of this steel was quite special. I made two tempering cycles at 600°C for two hours. This high tempering temperature will make sure that the abilities of the steel won't change if it gets hot while working up to 600°C. I wrapped them in stainless steel foil for the hardening so the dies will be sealed from oxigen to reach the part, this will pervent building scale. The parts only turned black because of the high tempering temperature, which I later removed by sandblasting them with glass beads. I really liked the look of the sandblasted parts so I left them like that and shipped them to Black Beard Projects.
Be sure to check his video of our collaboration to see the dies in action.

I have watched all your videos and am always amazed at your skills. I wonder would you be interested in restoring my 50 year old Webley mark 3 air rifle it has many problems including a cracked stock, faulty trigger mechanism, loose telescopic sight plate, all the screws are chewed up, it has no bluing so is a bit rusty, and the spring is also old, the barrell possibly may not be true. I think it would be a perfect project for you. Thanks Peter

@@cat3crazy These are attachments for another machine (the "power hammer") to shape the material it hammers. That's what a "die" is in engineering: a part used to form material into a desired shape. In this case the material was metal, but dies are also used to mould plastic and other stuff. They're very useful in manufacturing.

Absolutely beautiful! I just have to say that seeing you use “popcorn” packing to ship those parts makes me cringe. I have worked at UPS for 29 years and I’ll tell you popcorn packing is the most worthless packing made. What ever you put in that popcorn will settle to the bottom of the box and your part will only be protected by the cardboard box. If you shake your box and it’s contents move, you are risking damage. Wrap the parts in foam like you did but stuff crumpled paper or more foam packing in the box till it’s completely solid when you close it.

Looking at the print shown at 0:14... On the top view there is a feature dimensioned 8mm and 9.75mm on the left side, but 1mm more on the right side. 9mm ant 10.75mm. What is that for? I thought maybe that the part had a slight angle there but it's not shown in any of the other views like the taper of the dovetail from 29mm to 30mm.

Excellent work! I just hope every other youtuber doesn't start asking you to commission their things so that you can still have time for your projects.

Why is the hardened pin necessary for making the block square? Is the clamp not square or something?

Man, if I had all the stuff my mechanics has, well, I still wouldn't get anything done, but I'd have fewer excuses.

Really nice project, they came out well. One comment on the way you packed them, you shoulde have put a sticker: fragile. 😎

The lock looks a bit like the firingpin construction of a 1911 Colt Government model.😊

You should collaborate with Tony Stark. He also called the mechanic.

Why does the "we are the Robots", from Kraftwerk start playing in my head when you start working ? and i was in my teens back then ! :) Try playing when he's working !

How much would you charge for it ? Assuming you're an artisan who takes projects already fully specified with plans like that.

Does anyone on here know what make and model his milling machine is? I'll be in the market for one soon and I thought i'd do a bit of research. This one looks awesome purely because it looks so easy to clock the head. But how accurate is that process? Im tempted by the classic bridgeport type machine, but they're a pain to clock the head accurately.

Fascinating to watch and admire your skill one wrong measurement and it’s a paper weight… btw not being a mechanic is this supposed to be some sort of jig?

Awesome, love to watch a real engineer working, makes it all seem so simple, yet I know how much thought, effort, skill and knowledge goes into such a task.

Is it a lot cheaper to wrap in stainless foil than to put parts in a borax bath? Seems like the latter would produce better results, but I'm far from an expert in metallurgy.

why all the packing peanuts? are you afraid the hardened steel block will get damaged in shipping?
@bpetnoi1472

So two hard face hammer dies require more foam shipping peanuts than my last turn table set to me? He could have shipped them in a paper bag and they would have been fine shipped anywhere in the world.
