I'm personally happy it has "Against the Odds" in the title so it's possible to search for this video in the future. Could have used "Against the Otters" in the thumbnail though.
Seth! Please do a sequel to the simic land burn deck. I have been playing it in sultai with season of weaving, iridescent vinelasher, and clifftop lookout, and the deck seems insane now. Vinelasher completely changes the math when you combo off. Season is amazing too as a flexable boardwipe +synergy with all your tokens. Would love to see your take!
My central air AC broke. I put in a window one, but it's loud so I try to keep it off while recording. They are supposed to have my new central air one in next week thankfully.
Shouldn't you have been able to respond to removal on Insidious Roots by tapping the otters for mana and then casting more instants in response in some cases? That may have let you dig for another Roots given you have enough mana
@@casteanpreswyn7528 It is not pronounced both ways. Check any dictionary and you'll find only "kash". The word that's pronounced "cash-ay" is "cachet" (meaning prestige or cred) or the french word caché (with an accent mark, meaning "hidden") Also, obviously, in this case "cache grab" is a pun on the common expression "cash grab" which is sort of lost if you pronounce it like "cachet".
I think you’re factually incorrect? Dictionaries are descriptive, and will list all common pronunciations, and none of the ones I can find include Seth’s pronunciation. Closest is Wiktionary, which includes it only to say it’s proscribed (i.e. it’s not only not a standard pronunciation, it’s specifically forbidden by some authorities or experts).
@@DiscardatRandom yeah but that forces you to be all in on the combo bc of all the cards....if you take my approach you get to build into control with combo finish like old splinter twin. only 12 cards required are storm splitters molten duplication twinferno. and the rest can be dedicated to boardwipes and control cards
I've had a lot of fun with this. Gets to be difficult to impossible to manipulate cards on mobile when draw too many. And i have trouble telling what is exiled to play as adventure side vs creature side
So glad that I managed to pull a copy of Stormsplitter! I put him into a Grixis plot deck and every time I've played him so far is so satisfying. I've also seen some salt-roping when I'm down to 2 or 3 life then combo with plotted cards and suddenly have 8 or 16 pumped Stormsplitters on the board 😆
I have been messing with an otterly ridiculous deck since the moment I realized Otters (my favorite animal) were featured in this set. So I am HIGHLY curious to see how YOU did it because I am sure it's better than how I did it lol
I got one for you, have you tried redoing jeskai ascendancy tokens from 8 years ago with valley floodcaller and stoke the flames in standard now? More otters.
i think playing the pitiless carnage later would be better in some of these games so you can sacrifice more otter tokens, especially tapped ones as well instead of just banking on the lands
idk, seems kinda bad to me. If you're already storming off then it's a useless distraction. If it's supposed to be a backup roots then it's a bad one, you only get to tap it once and then don't get credit for more otters coming in after that. It only maybe helps a little bit when you're trying to do stuff in response to roots getting bounced. Definitely seems more like a card for fair decks (well, as fair as Nykthos ever is).
That's an interesting combo, although I don't expect a 2-card combo deck with no tutors to be able to win very consistently. Maybe the deck could use Beseech the Mirror? Although the deck doesn't have a ton of stuff to bargain, and it is kind of straining the mana base.
Hey Seth, It's easier to understand what's going on in the game when you use default art. Since I can't just hover a card (and sometimes the text isn't legible even if I would know the card by name), I have to recognize the card by its art. Using default art increases the chance that I'll recognize the art, and thus understand the card/field/etc.
@@AgentFransis No I can't. Like everyone else, I'm doing 3 other things while watching youtube, not waiting to REGULARLY PAUSE THE VIDEO before cards hit the field.
I mean, he breaks down the deck and names/explains the cards at the start of every video...? And usually says what he's playing as he plays it...? Alt art is a nice treat, for most. Plus, in this case he's just going nuts because it's a VIP account.
@@brownout100 Let's say I pay full attention to the intro and don't just skip it for the game play. Let's also say in the middle of the game, I turn away from work to see the board state, and see card art on the board that wasn't in the intro. How did watching the intro help...
when recording do you ever have someone you know queue for matches so that you might play each other and be able to show off the combo without opponent scooping?
The problem with this deck is it's a turn 5 combo deck in a format going to be defined by aggro decks. So either you add 4-8 kill spells and/or sweepers to the main deck, or lose.
I feel the exact opposite about the no scoop rule. It's there do that you can do the crazy over the top stuff you never get to do normally. Token limit us up at least once next time!
It would be nice to see Seth replay decks outside of the prerelease stream... its a bummer to think that the only time he touches that storm otter is during an unaccurate meta
Thank you, Seth, for actually being creative in the event and for the prep you put into streaming. This creator event was about the most boring. "Oh, another kindred deck with a pile of cards with prescriptive synergies that you clumsily assembled on stream with no preparation. How insightful."
"I think its one of the best aggro sets we've had in a long time" Seeing as aggro has been overpowered to absolute shit since luminarch aspirant and probably even before, that sentence really gives the whole "standard is dead" chant a lot more weight.
Awesome video! Seth, do you believe some Ping-focused strategy with Lizards can work for an Against the Odds? I can see two routes for it, Rakdos with Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin, and others in Mardu with Delney / Taii Waken / Roaming Throne 🖤🤍❤
Typically its either to float the mana in case of interaction, or to ensure that he sources the colored mana from the right sources to avoid pinging himself with pain lands, Sometimes its just Seth habits though
okay, this is quit cool. now though i actually havnt seen any one build fully around roots, moste of the time i see it, its in the deck because the deck generates a lot of tokens, and giving the creature tokens even more use, other than attack/block, is really good. heck i won a game earlier because of roots. i do love to see these against the odds decks, 'cause i often start thinking "can i make this work in brawl." and yeah this is one you can, and BOY, since brawl has both paralle lives and doubling season, this otter storm deck could be quit fun. thanks for the video Seth
Love the deck but I wish he would do these on ranked ladder instead of early access. Really hard to tell how good it can be when everyone else is playing random stuff. Awesome Seth nonsense as usual though!
I understand it to a degree but I honestly don't think sacrificing all lands ever resulted in a significant enough benefit than just sacrificing one or two fewer lands, and thus making the deck more capable of still continuing the combo. Rarely did you draw 5 cards and not find something that could have continued the combo if you had just drawn 3 instead.
The thing is, if you whiff the combo, you're probably dead, this is not a Quick combo in terms of board state and resources, preserving the lands rarely presents more than a nominal chance of recovering, and often none at all since usually loss of combo comes from killing the Insidious Roots and that means you have no dig power left anyway Once you've committed to devouring lands you often have no reason to not go all the way, since this is usually on a four or five land board where eating even one means you're not rebuilding state for a few turns
So the first image that pops into my head is comboing off into One Ring and you forget about protection and you attack with 256 otters with the slow attack animation for One Ring. Lucky it's wrong format lol
Just build Crim like decks, there's *far* too much red aggro, be it mice/slickshot. It's soul crushing to play, but it's far less annoying then the cheese.
