As soon as I saw this train I knew I wanted to make a GSC conversion out of it, especially with my plans for Squat GSC conversions too. It'll be amazing (in my brain)!
"AT-AT's falling pewssssshhh........where was I?" lol we get to see into Jay's head sometimes and its a fun place! I love this guy and I love this content.
That train looks amazing for sure, although i did get a chuckle out of "It's not really a train because it has wheels". I know what you mean, but i did chuckle a little.
Baught servohaulers and the galvanic magnavent, looks pretty good as a terrain piece to have multiple different cargo on that traincar that the crane can be placed on, im going to buy more of those to kitbash and connect together.
I really like smooth-sil. It's a food grade silicone resin that seems to be very heat-stable. I use it to make chocolate space marines and whatnot for the nerd brethren, and it handles temp changes just fine.
Try using a 1:1 mix of Tamiya Quick Type epoxy and Aves Apoxy Sculpt when filling in the Oyumaru. Also, after forming the cast of the front using Oyumaru and letting it harden you should then form the back cast. Once the back cast has hardened, remove the front part and reheat it to cast again. The slight sponginess of the other portion will let you to press the Oyumaru into the details and make a better mold.
I think the best way to differentiate Squat trains from the Necromunda train is to a) give them tracks instead of wheels, b) give them a lot of locomotive greebles, and c) really emphasize the train-car idea. Right now, I think the Ridgehauler is more akin to a semitruck, and while I definitely wanna see it stacked like a train, for gaming purpose it'd probably get _way_ too long after just a few more cars (to the point it could only really work as a terrain piece rather than a vehicle). Squat trains could be more tight-packed, with close-knit cars and lots of heavy weapons; each vehicle could be like its own mini train in a fleet of trains, poised to rain lead and death upon their enemies. 'Course, I'm thinking from a baseline of classic Squat, which GW seems to be steering away from if the teaser model is anything to go by. Time will tell what they come up with.
Look at the side panels on both train kits... looks to me like you could build the engine as a wagon as well probably the same kits with just extra sprue for the engine....
UV resin works well. I made a bunch of custodes leg plates without the cloth for my jet bikes. all resins heat up as they cure tho, if you do too deep of a layer of the UV it gets really hot as well. you can do it in layers or use less UV light to slow the curing.
laughed out loud at "do you want to play aeroNauTiCa imPeriaLis?" "no" haha i also love the "how" skit every week. you are fast becoming one of my favourite channels, i love the spicy takes delivered in such a friendly and wholesome way as well as seeing your talents in action with the models you paint. i rarely comment on youtube videos but find myself commenting on yours every week
I used UV resin a lot with blue stuff and it works perfectly, plenty of time to remove all the bubbles to keep all the details and it instantly cures so you can mass produce copies suoer quick
If you want an alternative for Green Stuff/milliput, there's a product called Fix-It Stick by Oatey, which is a bonding putty you can find in most hardware/home improvement stores. It's not only more widely available locally (made in the US), but it's also a little cheaper.
Polymer clay makes good moulds as well. Very strong when baked, but weak against uv and alcohol. It can hold very fine detail and is available in a number of different grades. For uv resin though, silicone is probably the best option.
if you bought 2 boxes then you could still have a train that is 3 lengths long and the other "front" could be used a broken terrain off the track.. a gang can be using it as a base/hideout.. turn it on its side after you "cut it open" - if that makes sense .. you're intelligent enough to work it out!
Gw always forgets ppl love the human storytelling behind its universe, I'd love to simply see a pack of imperial citizens or just imperial civilian transports just for storytelling or conversions
I've tried UV resin with bluestuff molds and had mixed results as the UV resin also heated up when curing. I guess since it cures faster it doesn't get as warm though.
Same, first time I used a thermoplastic mold and UV resin I learnt that UV resin still heats up when getting cured and the mold was ruined when i tried to remove the cured bit and the mold was stretched away with the bit.
I reckon the engine part of the front train will be optional, so you can probably make 2 wagons rather than 1 and the engine, could be wrong ofc That hush box sorta reminds me of the gentlemen in the buffy episode also called hush, good ep if you never saw it
As a model train guy, when I get the space I will make an Imperium manufactorum layout, might not go as in depth as a town killing field, but definitely will do,
It sucks Jay, as the price here in Australia the Tractor is $160.00 and the trailer is $100.00, For people on a Budget it's very pricy, but I have started to save to get a ridge hauler and trailer which will be going into my Imperial Guard Catachan Army, I have converted 5 Battlewagons as war prizes, into a command truck, Communication Battle truck and the other three are supply trucks. Now, these Ridge haulers will be built into a troop transporter, fuel, and weapon system pod. You can build different pods into anything you can imagine, cheers from DownUnder.
Let’s get a story just about a guy living in human society in the 40K universe. Like what does he eat for breakfast. What’s his job? He’s not a military guy, just a guy. I think that would be an interesting look into the world.
This will seem random, so apologies, but you mentioned Necromunda, so I'll inquire; has the current iteration of the game granted us with Spire Hunters, yet? Back in the old game, if I had been able to get into it, when I was learning 40k, Spyrers would have been my choice, as I love the idea of the rich wretches above sending their spawn down into the Hive to murder their way up to respectability, proving they have the tenacity to survive in the cutthroat world of Necromunda politics. Are they available, yet, or will they ever be a thing, again? The land train seemed a neat thing; I'll hope that the Squats/League of Votan? get a variant. It would be absolutely absurd, but the idea of them rolling their vehicle in, and then letting it stand as a fortification, literally bringing their bunker with them, would be great! Silly as hell, but great!
I've tried UV resin with blue stuff - you get maybe 1 ok cast, but the heat from the reaction of hardening it reactivates the bluestuff and destroys the mold
By chance, I just picked up the GSC drill terrain on eBay recently. I can't wait to build it and bring it down to my local game store for Warhammer days.
Necromunda is the wrong game to get into if you want simple rules. Fantastic game but we're talking about PAGES of rules about "What happens if you get set on fire while facing this particular direction while prone with a flesh wound and you haven't activated yet. Which way do you scatter, who bottles out, how many times can you..." etc... It's pretty rough.
I think the 40k rulesets run in cycles, depending on how tournament centric they are, more detailed unarguable for tournaments, to have fun throwing dice at your mates.
Oh I'm buying two of those. Yes, price will probably suck. But I'm in love with GW terrain kits (and yes, I'm counting this as one of those), especially when people resell them for cheap! Two large sprues are usually cheaper than single hero model, that's crazy.
Maybe I'm wrong, but the front part of the train looks a little larger (at least height wise) than the skorpius from the mechanicus, and slightly more intricate, and that's already an $80 kit. I'm guessing if this comes as one piece it's going to be $150, or $80 if it's one car at a time.
Would be cool to put a drill on the train to take to a mining site? that would be attacked in the wastes? but surprise! GSC is running the train! Ambush!
