Fortunately, the majority of Americans feel the way you do. Unfortunately, the media is intent on just showing those who do not understand from where our freedoms come. I partly blame our education system for this attitude toward our amazing country. I hope these malcontents will someday understand that a lot of women and men are dead to protect their right to protest. Thank you for your outspoken support for America. I pray you can become a citizen very soon.

As a sister of a vet, you are correct, media and education system have got people in this country hating this country and in doing so spitting on those that lost their lives for this country. It also comes back to our representatives. George Washington and the founders cared about the people our representatives now only care about how much money they can make

This song tells the story of my grandfather. He left port in California in the last part of 1943. In the early part of 1944, his ship was hit by a Japanese torpedo, and he was killed instantly, leaving behind my grandmother and his son, my dad, whom he had never met. I have my grandfather's purple heart sitting on a shelf in my living room.

You are a remarkable reactor. I appreciate your being unafraid to express the emotions the songs, such as this one, bring up. My husband was a soldier. He passed away 5 years ago next month. Our son flies the flag out in our yard on his dad's birthday, the anniversary of the day he died, Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and Veterans' Day. When he was deployed in 1970, I missed him so much, and when he came home, I was super glad.

When he did this song live at the ACM awards, this is actually that recording but without seeing the visuals of him sitting alone on the stage, then at the end, they bring the lights up behind him and there are gold star families there (simple explanation of gold star family...if you have someone serving, you can hang a blue star flag in your window, if they didn't make it home, you change it from blue to gold), it hits hard but different if that makes sense.... yeah, you said in the title "I nearly cried".... well I have no problem admitting I do with the first note... yeah... have yet to ever get all the way through this song without tears flowing... this and "Arlington" by Trace Adkins, "Come Home Soon" by SHeDAISY... and a few others...major tissue time!

Many of my family members have served in the military beginning with my great grandfather who joined the Union army in 1862 during the civil war. My Dad served in WWII, my brothers in Vietnam, my first husband in Germany, my second husband (Air Force. All the rest were army) and my son here in the USA. Thank the Good Lord none were lost in battle. This song brought tears to my eyes. I cannot imagine the pain of those who lost loved ones like this.

28-year military service here with action in Vietnam, Nicaragua, Beirut, Grenada and Desert Storm. We have all been touch by the death of a brother or sister in arms. Listening to this song, my tears flowed right alongside yours. We have sadness for losing a fellow soldier. A soldier dies and it acts as a mirror for us to look deeper inside ourselves. We bear our scars, fight our demons and have memories that we will take to the grave. My 12-year-old grandson asked me if I was a hero. I told him no, but I served with a whole bunch of them. I was one of the lucky ones that made it home, but I still have the memories of those 18-, 19- and 20-year-old friends whom I saw take their last breathes on the battlefield. The depth of those sacrifices can never be understood by anyone who has never stood on a battlefield. But I guess it doesn't really matter if we are understood by those not in the military, as long as we come closer to understanding ourselves. Just don't scoff at those of us vets with tears flowing down our faces in front of the Vietnam memorial as we slowly touch a name engraved in the granite. God bless our troops and God bless America!!!

I love to know there are people who support our military and freedoms. Those who do not support, who protest, and who bad mouth need to realize that in some places they would disappear or be imprisoned in places where they would have no rights. Those fighting give them the freedom to oppose and speak their mind. As we all learned in grade school, "I disagree with what you say, but I will fight until death for your right to say it"

MANY of us who served in war, Myself included wrote one of these letters, and handed it to a trusted brother to mail home for us, after we left the warzone, I retrieved my letter to my family and burned it without opening it and reading what I had written for my family to read in the event of my death in combat, I also held the letters for 5 of my brothers in arms, and was thrilled that I was able to hand their letters back to them instead of having to mail them for them, this tradition is important for an American fighting man and woman, and their families, that their loved one gets to tell their families one last time, how they felt before they died fighting for our country.

I haven't confirmed this before writing this comment, but I recall a reporter once remarked to President Abraham Lincoln (God rest his soul) in the midst of the American Civil War that he hoped God was on the side of the Union, to which President Lincoln replied, "oh no, let us hope we're on God's side." I'm grateful to have served for 30 years in the United States Air Force, and in my first two years I served as a funeral detail officer rendering military honors for deceased veterans, and it was an amazing experience. But, if we're not on God's side, then let us perish.

No one comes home from war. I saw combat on two continents and will say the person who came back was not the same as the person who left. For years, and still on some really bad days over 30 years later, I still think those who came home in a box were the lucky ones. But brothers and sisters, it does get easier; just don't give in to the 22-a-day.
