This is bullshit speak for I've only been on set a few minutes and I don't want to outright lie to the audience. He doesn't like the price and I get the feeling he isn't comfortable in it.
Ah, yes, the Bateman Labs Envy-a chair that feels as sharp as it looks. You see, it’s not just about sitting; it’s about dominating your space, much like how Huey Lewis and the News dominated the charts in the '80s. You probably haven't paid attention to the craftsmanship behind most chairs-how could you, when they all look the same? But the Envy, well, it's different. Let’s talk about that linen upholstery. It’s not just fabric, it’s an experience. Soft to the touch, yet structured, it gives off this refined vibe that’s subtle but undeniable. The kind of texture that makes you want to feel it, even when you’re not sitting down. And then there’s the oak base-polished to perfection. The wood has this rich, warm hue, inviting yet formidable. It says, “I mean business.” The keyboard and mouse tray? Ingeniously built into the design, with just the right balance of accessibility and authority. It feels like the keys are waiting for you to take control. And the footrest, ergonomically crafted to align with your every move, provides the support you didn’t know you needed but now can’t live without. But the monitor mount... that’s where things really get exciting. It elevates your screen like a crown jewel, perfectly centered, perfectly balanced, commanding your attention. You can't just look at the screen; you own it. The monitor seems to float, framed by that natural wood grain that both grounds and inspires you. And you know what the best part is? The Envy doesn’t try too hard. It doesn’t need to. It’s effortlessly perfect, much like Patrick Bateman’s mornings before things... take a turn. And now, standing here in front of it, you can feel it. You want it. Hey Hermann look here! 🪓
I don't know what I love more about this, the beautiful, tasteful and well-written shitpost that even has a watermark on it, or the fact that your username is "fuscão preto" (brasil mencionado btw).
Have seen and tested this chair at PAX West and PAX East. Can’t wait to pick one up. They are super high quality and the company is a fantastic small team of wood workers. 10/10. Get what you pay for.
I won't lie, I recently had to move from a 2-bed apartment into what is essentially a studio with a little extra room for a bed. I had no where for my desk so I got rid of it. I now have one of those jank chest of drawers as a desk set ups. I'm seriously considering this chair or something similar! Thanks for sharing!
Looks like it's designed for easy dismantling and reassembly, so I can see it being a worthy investment for people planning to move a few times in the future.
@@torporvasflam8670 yeah this is another reason I like it. I can move the ottoman or the desk and simply use it as an armchair to watch TV or whatever. But then move everything back to work.
@@Sarrienne the reason I had to downgrade was because I moved for work, the area I used to be in was much much cheaper (my wage was also less). Fortunately/unfortunately I can afford this but not a 2-bed apartment 😅 Also honestly if you buy the individual components, so I am not interested in ottoman or most of the components it really isn't all that badly prices imo. Expensive yes but it's well thought out, well made and and perfect serves a purpose. But... Even then I said originally "or something similar" I hadn't ever considered one of the armchairs with built in desk before. So I might find something more IKEA quality for short term
I dig it. Honestly surprised at the cost of this chair. If secretlabs can get away with a nearly 1,000 dollar mass produced "gaming chair", then why not a bespoke $1700 wood chair that from the looks of things is quite literally heirloom quality.
it's a rip off to be quite frank, as i said above it's just a horrible 70's retro hell design, prices are astonishingly high and the accessories are also priced very high. good idea, craptastic execution
@@PaxTemplar Comparied to what? Do you have a different maker of actual hardwood chairs that can be customized? If not, this is a very reasonable offering. Expensive, and perhaps unnecessary, but rip of is a bit much don't you think?
@@BeCurieUs ROFL.. nah man. it looks like a craptastic 70 horror show and is massively overpriced. reasonable my aching anus. it's very very overpriced. as i said, good idea , badly executed.
@@PaxTemplar So, others are executing it better? Do you happen to know of a brand cause I am interested. Right now, just regular walnut chairs are like 500 bucks, so not sure where you are finding better deals on something like this, but I am all ears!
the core of that chair literally looks like the granpa chair i was using before buying a regular chair after it broke to this day, still the best chair i had
When I was a kid we had a big chair with huge armrests. My father used to put a big wooden board on it, exactly like on this video. I put mouse and keyboard on that board, and it was one of the best gaming experiences in my life. The video brought some fine memories :)
I worked in a woodshop for a while, we always assemble before shipping. You can never be sure if everything was cut perfectly to spec or if tolerances were correct until you try it out once
I think the implication is that factory-made wood / "wood" (glued sawdust) furniture is almost never tested before shipping. You should include that quality assurance when evaluating price.
Me defending the MSRP of Steelcase chairs, "long term comfort and ergonomics are worth the premium. It'll last you over a decade of heavy use." Me learning how much this is, "FOR A CHAIR?!"
I have a Steelcase chair that was obtained for $20 at an office surplus sale. It's a nice chair except for the fact that the armrests are loose and the chair doesn't stay in the position you set it to particularly well. Mine was made in Grand Rapids, MI in 1998.
Commercial office furniture is a whole different beast, this is elitist home office shit. Commercial office seating specifically is often meant to be sat in for at a minimum 6 hours a day and expected to last 10+ years. My herman miller aeron is warrantied for 12 years, I have never had any pain or stiffness after spending easily 10 hours in it which I can't say for any other chair I've ever used even my mattress gets uncomfortable after 8 hours. I tell people constantly if you sit at a desk for long periods of time buy a commercial office chair it doesn't have to be an ergo expensive chair like an aeron or an embody or leap etc even a barebones old school steel case criterion will last you 20 years and they are surprisingly comfortable. Bonus points if you can find a preowned or refurbishing outlet/store nearby you can get things as good as new for 50% cheaper than new often with a warranty still and the option to physically try out different models.
Man that difference in labour and material cost is literally so huge 🤯 You can get whole table chair set made by professional craftsman by hand literally every piece by hand done cut assembly polished in front of you at your home
2:00 overpriced and expensive are not the same. 2700$ for a fancy chair might be an adequate price and exactly what it’s worth. But for the average consumer that is not going to make a difference. Because either way, only few people can afford to spend that much on something like this. Looks nice though
I was lucky enough to check out this chair at PAX West at the Bateman booth. Pros: 1. It’s super comfortable 2. I can totally see how you’d want to lounge on this while getting your gaming hours in 3. It’s very customizable Cons: There’s a very small demographic of people who would be able to afford this or willingly buy this instead of a conventional setup
As a person who has been looking at heirloom quality, real wood furniture...this is a super reasonable price. Mind you, very expensive, but not for what you are getting. Putting on my "if I don't need my bonus check" list :D
It'd cost less money to make this yourself, including buying all the tools! Proper heirloom quality, real wood furniture costs less, even when made by a woodworker who did furniture for the White House.
@@Sarrienne I don't want to be a woodworker so that is a nonstarter. And I don't know what you are talking about with cheap heirloom quality stuff. Chairs like featured here, using American Walnut START at 500 bucks. That is for a single dinning room chair, not even upholstered. Not sure what kinda deals you have in your area, but in my neck of the woods, high quality, heirloom chairs and hundreds of dollars just for BOM costs.
@@BeCurieUs Oh, you can certainly find chairs like that which are priced insanely high... several thousand, at least... But any woodworker worthy of the name will not be overcharging like this. Round here you'll find plenty of old-school craftsmen who will make a chair like this, in American Walnut, for about £700... and by Old School, I mean they've been professional hand tool woodworkers since the 1960s. None of this machined mass-produced nonsense.
@@Sarrienne I think your prices are old school chase you are not finding a hand made walnut chair with this level of engineering for under $1,000 lol. Link it up if you find one!
It looks like there's even accessory options for the folks who can't afford their chair (or already have a Swedish flakpak alternative) but could use a desk (with or without laptop riser) for their Swedish flatpak armchair with compatible armrests.
I saw this on one of @Wyrmwood convention videos when they were looking at other exhibitors at one of the gaming conventions. Speaking of which, you guys should totally review Wyrmwood’s desk!
Honestly with what some "gaming chairs" go for, and that fit and finish being almost perfect, like Im not going to because I have my grandmother's old dining table as my desk but like thats not terrible considering everything. And its kinda minimalist if you don't want the ottoman and tv arm and everything.
I got an Ikea Poang several years ago for a reading chair, which is more-or-less the same basic type of chair, and I ended up loving it as a work chair too even though it's pretty terrible for that purpose at my regular desk (keyboard in lap, monitor is too high, monitor is far away and have to zoom the desktop image, etc). This is a really cool take on what I've been trying to figure out for my chair; the only reason I haven't gone this far is because I like to switch between it, a kneeling chair, standing, a regular chair, and a recumbant bike
I think the product they are offering is unique, seemingly built to mimic mid century modern furniture and I think for some people this will be an easy choice
A very neat design, great for a small studio or something. Of course at that price anyone who rents a small studio outside of like NYC couldn't afford it, but still. Neat design.
It's more expensive than that Corsair desk setup and I'd still take this over that. Looks comfortable and classy. Good engineering went into it. With a little modeling experience you can make your own. Definitely one of those things I imagine is gonna be a hot item for your guy's christmas party.
Listen i'm all for expensive chairs, but 2700 dollars for a non-leather chair seems crazy, seeing that you can get a Stressless admiral lounger for $2700 WITH an ottoman, and the option for a laptop table that definitely isn't 600 bucks (i can't remember how much it actually was since you have to basically call a furniture store to find anything out). A pretty good deal considering the insanely nice leather options and far heavier duty craftsmanship. Yeah that wood is super nice, but so is a cold rolled steel frame engineered to move with your back as you *recline* (what a concept). This just looks fragile and uncomfortable in comparison. I think i can live without the ottoman monitor attachment (I do own the Stressless btw if it wasn't obvious).
I guess Colton been fired is now officially confirmed. To understand this video: You just take your $100 garden chair and put it inside and it suddely is $2000. Basically free money!
I remember when Linus made the couch computer desk that basically locks you in place. They make lifting coffee tables for cheap now that serve the same function and are far more convenient
I mean it's super expensive but comparing it to a high end chair + desk... and It's actually not terrible and the build quality seems superb. If I didn't already have a desk and chair, I may think of this as a nice option, especially to save space.
I like its modularity, but I think you're better off going with an electric recliner armchair for adjustability and comfort. I bought one a year ago for about 900 USD and wall-mounted my 4K 48 inch OLED monitor. No desk. I'm on my feet all day, so coming home to this is utter bliss. It's the most comfortable PC setup that I've ever had.
honestly if I had the space for it I would probably get it, but it's far too nice for my current living conditions so I'll have to bookmark that for later and hope it still exists by the time I have a good place for it
This a steel case and herman miller competitor for corporate executive where budgets are in the tens-hundreds of thousands. Form and function are equally valued to the right buyer. People in the comments are comparing it to IKEA pricing and getting bent out of shape. Do any of you have a clue how much cubicle walls/desk costs?
that is some Wyrmwood level woodworking. extremely good looking setup. i can see that being a thousand times better than any "gaming" chair that any big box store sells
It's definitely classy, but I doubt it'd be comfortable after about 1 hour with your posture reasoning. I'd like for ShortCircuit to explore a recliner avenue in the future. Other than that, I hope you do win it at the Christmas party, Jake!
that was my thought maybe for a little while reading a book or something or watching some episodes of something but not being able to adjust the back at all like a normal recliner seems like a posture nightmare.
Looking at their site, that POÄNG Lap Desk addition is cool. I'm using a little side table with a swivel arm over a recliner. Doesn't quite sit far enough over so I get a bit sore from the angle.
when I saw the design, I almost died from laughter. It's the most classic design, straight from 70s in socialist Poland (and most likely neighbors too). It's like scaled 40% bigger, and better made, but everything - shape, cushioning method and color is the same. I have been sitting on one of these chairs since 1980s! :D And boy, these are comfortable.
When Linus said "The problem with heaven is that before you can get there you have to get through life", I genuinely expected him to follow that up with "just like how you have to get through *our sponsor!* 😃"
At least from the video this looks like a solid, decent quality product. However, the lack of adjustability for different heights and (as Linus pointed out) and sitting positions will be a clear problem, I think, after just a week of use for a lot of people.
Its definitely a niche product but if a want to play in my living room without going into this whole gamer aesthetic and im already down the vitra etc. Pipleline this seems fitting
For anyone interested in a chair LIKE THIS. People all the time throw out, REALLY high, bespoke quality lounge chairs that belonged to their parents or grandparents and do not fit their interior design aesthetics. Check out some marketplaces of your choice and you'll probably find some ridiculously comfortable old man chairs for less then a few hundred
I'm glad you were sitting there since you sat down. Reality is still working. >) This is one of those cases where I definitely would want to try it before buying. That is a huge amount of money for a chair, especially considering the glut of sub $100 chairs that last me 3-5 years before needing to be replaced. Add to that auctions where actual high end chairs are sold due to being undeliverable in my area (like lower end Herman Miller chairs for under $300 after auction) I'm kind of leaning away from this. But honestly it looks great, I applaud their ingenuity for the modular system, and I hope they make a lot of them for people.
Eh, my setup might not be the most ergonomic for actually sitting up close to play FPS games and the like (which I play with a M+KB), but for less than that I got a large powered recliner (with adjustable headrest) big enough for my bulk, and eventually I got a rotating side table for misc. stuff (cup, phone, etc.), and my TV is on a table in front of me, close enough that my feet go under it when reclining. Works pretty well since I use my computer to watch videos (mostly YT, but other things as well) extensively, and I mostly play with a controller, and I use a Rii wireless keyboard to control video playback. I seriously doubt I'd find this Envy Armchair nearly as comfortable to use compared to my existing setup. EDIT: Oh, I'm sure it has good build quality and comfortable enough cushioned surfaces, and the modular slots for accessories are a fine idea, but I'm not rich, and even if I was I'd keep with my existing setup because it works for me.
its not absurd tho cuz its acc pretty good value for what it is. absurd is something overpriced like designer clothing from gucci or lv which are actually overpriced.
It's really not though, sure it's expensive but there's a lot of labour going into that piece of furniture. the slabs of wood for the laptop table and the side table are both edge laminated to get the width. Unless they've found someone willing to do custom runs of a low volume specialty product like that in the specific wood they prefer(nobody's doing that) , they're laminating that wood in house. that means squaring the surfaces, probably domino jointing them for added strength in the glue-up then finishing the stock, all before they make the first cut for the actual furniture. All the visible joints are doable with a CNC but to get the fitment seen in video they'd have to sand and finish by hand for final fit. All that isn't even touching on the finish, anything that isn't a flat surface is getting done by hand on the sanding end of things. All this is being done in B.C. where minimum wage is almost 18$Cad/hr and I guarantee they aren't paying that little for the kinds of people who can consistently produce work to that level with little enough wastage to be viable.
I mounted one of those articulating arms to my sofa's armrest which is swung backwards towards the seat for my laptop. For a desk, I have a single steel shelf that rests over both armrests. My setup is definitely very DIY looking though.
Really like that it’s wood, and it really looks like it could compete with any of the other gaming/office chairs. How does it compare to the other ones that are made out of metal and plastic? Like the one that looks like a scorpion
Ask Linus' parents if they have an old photo of baby him in a high chair to do a then and now comparison of him in this chair. He just needs a sippy cup and some apple sauce...
I'll stick with my Dusty Fabric Lift Chair, I have a monitor stand, wireless keyboard and mouse, PVC on a table next to me, a fraction of the cost, it is a dual motor recliner so very versatile and no need for an Ottoman.
That is a lot of money for a chair and doesn't recline, doesn't tilt, and you have to buy in a big bundle then buy accessories. Looks nice though. I always loved mid-century modern furniture.
In this comment section: people that don't know how expensive real wood and good craftsmanship is and yea probably bc it's a very design-y thing and a luxury product they also added some margin on top of that because they ain't be selling *that* many anyway
My least favorite thing about using a computer is sitting at it. I’ve gone as far as having a bed I pull in and out from under my computer desk as needed. This is definitely the type of product I might love, but 2k is a lot of money to find the answer. Unfortunately that’s a big problem with types of products. Is this the right one for you?! Buy it and find out..
