I Need To Off Load Cows Fast!! Picking Cull cows From The Herd

It's been like this all summer but I desperately need some rain! I'm running out of grass fast and there's no sign of rain on the horizon.
I intended to milk as many cows as I could through till the end of May but this weather has made me pull the lever and I need to send my culls to the works to take some pressure off the good cows.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey I’m Andrew The Once A Day Farmer, I farm alongside my father on my family dairy farm in New Zealand.
Our Dairy system is quite unique as we only milk our 320 jersey cows Once A Day (hence the name), and they stay outside on grass for 365 days of the year!!

I'm from the USA. We bought 2 Jersey cows for our small family acreage at the local cow sale. 1 has only 2 teats that function and 1 has 4 that work just fine. Here, dairy farmers often cull because of age. 6-7 years old and they're sold off. We are very pleased to have beautiful fresh milk for our family. One of our girls just calved and 1 will this summer. The milk here is not very great from the stores, imo. But neither is alot of the food. I'm working on growing most of my vegetables and fruits on our place.

That's awesome, Longevity is trait I place a lot of importance for my herd. I have a couple that have only 2 but they still milk really well, It certainly doesn't mean your milk yield is halved! You cant beat home grown produce, I would like to do more of our own too

@@TheOnceADayFarmer I will say, I am impressed with your care of your cows. Sadly most large dairy operations here are not great. I just like to treat our animals as well as possible, as I can tell that you do too.

Ah Andrew it's tough to have to sell cows that you could have milked on for another month or so. All because of drought 😪. I really hope that you get lots of rain soon. You do very good honest videos Andrew.

When one's livelihood is at stake, one cannot allow emotion to cloud choice of culls. 😊 In time past, many a child's calf club pet was kept beyond acceptable production because of being a quiet old boveril! I was waiting for a habitual booter-off-of-cups to go on the list, but you obviously culled them early in the piece. The older style clusters didn't turn off when floored, causing a domino effect along with the danger of them sucking up shit and earning a nice pink card from "The Man". 🤔

cows here in ireland have been making big money for the last 18 months or so , the top end dairy stock from milk recorded herds doing 550 kgs of milk solids and upwards ,are making 2500/3500 euros a head. what are good cows making out in new zealand ,

Take it from an Irish Dairy farmer, no one made that money. Don't confuse output with profit. The cow costs €1500 to €2000 at least to keep. I don't know where you got your figures from but they are wrong.
