Fun Fact: Sean Penn was so pissed about his portrayal in the movie, that he send Stone & Parker a very angry, handwritten letter. And of course, they actually released it to the public. xD
Yeaha and with joe biden blowing up an innocent guy, two other adults and 7 kids, its the running gag thats relevant again. Thanks joe biden, thanks every moron who voted fo joe biden. The world now has a nation ran by terrorists thanks to you.
I don’t know, Matt and Trey are just kind grumpy old men at this point. I doubt their humor would be all that incisive circa 2021. I mean even in TA they pretty much just went for the obvious jokes and the low hanging fruit.
@AnuViation I had an acquaintance, back in highschool, who CONSTANTLY shouted: "AMERICA!!!", everytime he had the chance. He was one the "Dumb, Lovable, Big Jock", that everyone adored. Basically Brett from Inside Job. I'm pretty sure he's gonna B Governor of California, one day.
I’ve seen mini docs about the making of this (they hated every second because of everything going wrong) but the best part is that MATT Damon wasn’t meant to be this way. He was supposed to be normal. But they thought his puppet looked so stupid and they would make fun of it with that voice and saying his name that they just decided that was what it would be lol
During the early days of the War on Terror, especially when we were invading Iraq, Hollywood was extremely outspoken in their opposition to the invasion. Michael Moore had a famous impromptu rant about Bush and invading Iraq when he won an Oscar for Bowling for Columbine. This movie really takes swipes at both sides of the issue: How America drops in on other countries to catch bad guys, and end up bombing the place to shit… and how Hollywood celebrities like to think they’re political commentators, when the majority of them are dumber than rocks.
According to legend, that sex scene actually went on for about 10 minutes originally, and was WAY more graphic and over the top than in the final cut of the film (even to the point where the puppets shit on each other). The reason they went SO over the top was because Matt and Trey knew the ratings board would make them censor a lot of it, so filmed a bunch of crazy stuff that they knew they'd have to cut so they had something to 'bargain' with, which allowed them to leave in the crazy stuff that they actually wanted!
Yeah, there were two different DVD releases. One was rated R and the same as the theatrical release and the other was "uncensored and unrated". I forget if there was anything else different about that one besides the extended sex scene.
I saw that version at the movie theatre in Canada. Was expecting Mel to get extra grossed out, but then it didn't happen. Was hilarious but man, it made a lot of people uncomfortable in the theatre.
They had NO reason to go as hard as they did on this soundtrack but thank God they did. (also apparently Matt Damon thought his portrayal was hilarious and wanted to keep the puppet).
From what I’ve read, Trey and Matt never intended Matt Damon’s character to be mentally challenged. However, the day that Damon’s puppet arrived from the workshop, it just looked kinda retarded. They didn’t have time to send his puppet back to be remade, so they just decided to make his character retarded. Which is pretty hilarious.
Another large premise is americans not knowing where places are in the world. For example the middle east being so far away from the pyramids in Egypt. And the pyramids being so far away from the sphinx in giza.
@@bobkilla430 nobody thats not a history major or from those parts of the world knows anything about those parts of the world you can even ask europeans about the middle east and most wont know
What's funny is after the movie came out, most of the actors who were parodied in it were upset that they weren't asked to voice themselves. It's good to see that most of them had a sense of humor except Sean Penn who actually wrote a very angry letter to Matt and Trey. Cannibal: The Musical, is another film by the two and is extremely underrated.
When they wrapped, Trey and Matt were quoted as saying "We will never work with puppets again!" Trey is a bit of a workaholic and a perfectionist. They actually commissioned software to move the puppets' mouths real time with voice actors, but after Trey saw the result, he insisted to got back to manual control because it was "too perfect", and he wanted to really lean into the akwardness of the puppets.
Thunderbirds actually automated the lip movements of its puppets based on the voice audio. Of course, back then it was simply the volume of the speech.
With comedies, you need people who know how to have a good laugh! I have seen some reaction to comedies that made me want to kill myself in depression.
He's literally the only reaction channel I watch. I saw a couple of videos of veterans watching Private Ryan but I watched Mello react to Blazing Saddles and subbed instantly.
Parents were freaking out after they took their kids to see this movie. I guess they didn't notice the R rating and the creators of South Park on the poster.
My dad took me to see it when I was 7, he knew, but he raised me to laugh instead of being offended. Plus, he didn’t think I would comprehend a lot of it; I was laughing my ass off the entire movie. *Actions speak louder than words and sticks and bones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.*
@@christophero1969 I love Orgazmo! (Though I think it's from the 90's.) "Dad, I don't think I'm gonna do hamster style any more." "That's nice." "And that's the way it went down, man!" 😭
This is genuinely one of the greatest movies ever made in my opinion. Not only is it hilarious and relevant to the time story wise, the work that went into the scenery, puppets etc is amazing. They broke world records whilst filming this with some of the shots they produced due to the models scale etc.
My favorite thing about Matt Damon was that they really didn’t have much of a problem with him, but the puppet just looked super downsy so…there ya go.
Well apparently they left his face is the oven too long or something. The puppet guy went to Matt and Trey and told them is was fucked up but they just used it anyway.
Another fun fact (or at least, this is something I've heard from two different sources,) Kim Jung Il outlawed western films, but was obsessed with James Bond, having a massive DVD collection of all those films. One source even claimed he thought they were real (honestly, Kim Jung Il was WAY crazier than most people realize, but even that's a bit of a stretch IMO)
I loved how they basically set Gary up as their version of Tom Cruise. They even have little references like the "top gun actor" who does all his own stunts.
@@jamieanderson3475 ok, fine? It's still a pretty good movie. to clarify, i guess I don't understand why it should matter if they hate it or it wasn't written by them.
My dad brought me and my bro to see this and was shocked at what was being shown but saw me and my bro dying laughing and he saw kids that were younger there so felt better about it.
You're probably too young to remember this but in the early 2000s there were a lot of actors who were speaking out against the Iraq War. That's why there's so much emphasis on the actors.
@@Ailurophile1984 which has been one of the only positives he's done in his presidency I agree it could've been better, but that's because no one took the plan seriously. The date for exiting Afghanistan was set by Trump; Biden simply followed through. The reason no serious preparations for evacuation were made was because all previous presidents for decades had been talked into staying, and the military industrial complex (and the politicians/media in their pocket) assumed the same would occur this time. It certainly worked Trump and Obama, but Biden was there before and knew the reasons to stay were just more excuses & moving the goal post. Biden holds his ground on this one thing, and suddenly, they have to scramble to make the withdrawal of Afghanistan happen (something they had a year to prepare.) War is a racket, and I advise anyone to look into "The Afghanistan Papers" to have a better grasp of why the goal was never about helping people (that's just how it's marketed to U.S. citizens) but about maintaining perpetual war for profit.
@@Rhodair Literally the only accurate statement you just made was about the Afghanistan papers. Trump’s pullout date was in may. Biden broke that deal, moving the date back to september. Also, the idea that Biden isn’t an establishment war hawk is just god damn hilarious. It was Biden’s responsibility to make sure preparations for the pullout were being made, he failed. Don’t blame the middle managers for the strategic failures of the president and his generals.
@@grannytorrelli2560 Good point about the pullout date change. Yeah, Biden's a war hawk like the others in majority of situations; I only give kudos for him actually following through with ending it. You're right about the date being moved; I had "commitment for exiting" in mind but erroneously said date which is wrong. Biden is slightly less war hawk here, though, and he often disagreed with Obama on how far to take things. He's still a war criminal like every other president in my lifetime. He still agreed with most of it; he's only slightly better in not wanting it to last forever. As Biden later stated, the buck stops with him. There can be problems occurring in lower levels impossible to foresee, but responsibility always travels back to the top. Gov reports will be totally different based on the biases of those shaping them and can look 'good enough' instead of what's right. I only mention this as why I don't put _all_ my blame on Biden alone. I might blame the middle managers and generals just as much but never more than Biden.
Basically one big mockery of how celebrity culture pervades the mainstream media even to the point we somehow attach more importance to the average celebrity’s opinion than actual experts. And it also has the whole America butting it’s head into other countries business satire, which combined makes this one of my favourite comedies of that era. I know it won’t happen but I’d love a sequel.
The only thing in this movie that’s actually connected to South Park aside from the ruthless interpretations of actors is the song Montage, which was directly taken from the South Park episode “Asspen” in one of its earlier seasons. Awesome reaction Mell!!!
The use of Supermarionation is perfect in this movie, and does credit to Gerry and Sylvia Anderson (see the documentary “Filmed in Supermarionation”, and episodes of “Thunderbirds”).
The reason why the puppets look so creepy is because this film is basically inspired by the action series named Thunderbirds (1965), that had puppets in a similar type of design that looks creepy. Another fact, the people who designed the puppets are the legendary Chiodo Brothers. Who’re best known for doing stop motion and practical effects for films like Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, UHF, the first four Critters films, Ernest Scared Stupid and Killer Klowns from Outer Space.
2:15 what I love about this shot is not only do they knock down the Eiffel Tower, but it falls on the Arc de Triomphe. In real life they're like a mile apart but it's just great that they got two jokes out of this rather than one.
Sean Penn wrote a response to the film, specifically sent to Trey and Matt and apparently, given the letter sent to them, their portrayal of him in the movie, was absolutely spot on! They were laughing their arses off. Saddam Hussein banned South Park: The Movie, in Iraq because he was depicted as being in a gay relationship with Satan. Oh, boy, do Trey and Matt wish that was the case.....
I remember watching this in theaters while i was a little too stoned... about 20 mins in I started freaking out and told my buddy I might be too high because all the actors started looking like puppets.. he made fun of me for a long long time for that lmao
The sex scene is one of the greatest few moments of cinema ever. The grace, the emotion, the charm. So demure. Tasteful. Omfg, l watched this film with my mum who has Alzheimer’s, she laughed so hard l thought she was going to choke. For days afterwards, and even now when l think she’s half asleep, she’ll look up and say “Matt Damon”. Bloody hilarious. Hi from Australia, this was so much fun 😂🤣😂🤣
The Aussie version had the much longer sex scene in it; still one of the all time funniest moments Ive ever seen. My face and sides hurt for hours after seeing this
I don’t think I’ve ever heard you laugh so much in one sitting. It’s delightful. I forgot about this movie, TBH. I am a huge South Park fan so when I heard Trey Parker’s voice I’m like ohhhhh yeah! LETS FIGHTING LOOOOOVEEEE
13:30 Apparently, this was one of the more time consuming scenes to do. Because the puppeteers couldn't stop laughing. You can actually seem some points where the puppets shake a lot, due to the puppeteers being unable to control themselves.
I watched the uncut version when it was on Netflix (I think?) several years ago and during the more *ahem* graphic moments of the puppet sex scene my dad was standing in the doorway of the lounge room and shouted “Oh NO!” while laughing hysterically. Classic Matt and Trey childish humour 😭
The reason they used the screen actor's guild was because this movie came out during the debate over the Iraq War and the invasion of Iraq and the actors were all over TV against it. Trey And Matt then added them to the storyline. The soundtrack to this movie has like 5 amazing songs that I play on a regular basis.
I remember Nicole Kidman giving her acceptance speech for her(STELLAR)performance in the Hours. "People are saying 'why hold award shows when there is so much misery going on in the world?' Because art is important!" I was like, just hold the damn award shows. The Iraqi nor the government give a rats' ass what Hollywood thinks. By all means; be an activist, use your fame to raise awareness but, y'know ..simmer down.
Saw this in the theater. There were times I was losing control laughing. It would also pass for a documentary on the war on terror. Good work Mel. If you get a chance, take some time to watch how they made this film. I think there are some RU-vid vids.
Early on when you said how amazing it was they could make this movie. It actually almost split Matt and Trey up because it was so stressful to make. That’s why there’s never going to be a sequel.
The opening puppet shot was a prank on the studio. Matt and Trey shot the opening scene with a puppet in front of a crappy painting of the Eiffel Tower as a goof, causing one studio executive to blurt out “They f*cked us!” during the screening. It wasn’t until the camera pulled back to reveal a more detailed set that the test audience realized they had been pranked.
I was living in the theater district when I saw this movie in Times Square. It was insane because the same theater I was sitting in was in the movie. It was very weird.
I was in the Navy and stationed in San Diego when this came out. Id never laughed this hard in my life. A lot of the political satire was reflective of the news media of the early 2000s
my favorite part about Matt Damons character is the reason why he's like that and Matt Damons response. Matt and Trey couldn't think of any pretentious thing to make fun of about him so they just had him say his name. Matt Damon found it funny.
@@markbartoszek8585 - That and having to deal with the MPAA again was probably also annoying as hell for them (not to mention stressful). When South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut was to be released, MPAA kept slapping it with an NC-17 rating. Here's a quote from the Wikipedia page: "Of the six times the film was screened to the MPAA, it was designated NC-17 after five screenings, the last of which was two weeks before its scheduled release. A marketing agent from Paramount called Parker and Stone and explained that the studio "needed" an R. In response, Stone contacted producer Scott Rudin, who in turn called a Paramount executive and, in Stone's words, "freaked out on them." The film's rating was lowered to R the following day, with the original film intact." I mention this because they did the EXACT SAME thing with Team America, originally gave it an NC-17, but Matt and Trey were prepared. From what I heard they made the "sex scene" much longer, almost double the time in the movie. After they got the NC-17 rating, they "cut out" many parts of it. Basically it made the MPAA think they "won" by letting them censor part of the movie. MPAA really had it out against Matt and Trey for w/e reason as I think this dated back to their 1997 film titled "Orgasmo" and followed them ever since. Then again, now that I think about it, if they had made a Team America 2, they could bypass MPAA and just release direct to Streaming services instead. But I agree with you, if they truely hated doing it, I doubt no amount of money would ever make them do a 2nd one.
I think the best part about the hammer joke is that your brain won't actually let you hit yourself hard enough to cause irreparable damage to your skull.
I used to have a ball cap with that logo, and it just vanished one day. To this day I've never found another one quite like it. A lot of knit caps and beanies for some reason.
I remember watching this in the cinema back in 2004 and the entire audience was absolutely in hysterics. I've been to stand up shows that didn't get as big of a reaction to the jokes in this film.
Fun fact- when they made the puppet version of Matt Damon, Trey and Matt said he looked mentally challenged, so they made it where he only said his name like Timmy in South Park.
The movie is hilarious but the reaction “man.. this music got me feeling something, but the throwing up got me feeling something else” had me on the floor. Lol
You should totally check out "Thunderbirds", the 1960s "supermarionation" show that this style of puppetry was first used extensively on. They definitely give it more than a nod in this one!!
Fun fact: they turned up the volume for the song during the closing credits so it would blast “America, fuck yeah!” through theaters with the doors open.
"If you're captured you'll prob want to take your own life, here" *gives him a hammer* 🤣🤣🤣 Edit: also the Pearl Harbor song is the greatest love song of all time
Dude this is the best reaction video I've seen to one of my favourite movies. Seen that movie on DVD when I was 11 years old. Much love to you from Fife, Scotland 😎🤙
There are 1 or 2 movies that I always forget exist until I see somebody react to them. And I feel literally guilty that I forgot about the movie, because the movie is so unbelievably awesome. This is one of them. Holy shit......this movie is beyond funny. I couldn't breathe the first time I watched and I gave myself a raging headache from laughing nonstop.
I saw this in theaters when it came out and it was the single loudest, hardest laughing, roudiest I've ever seen a cinema crowd. Remember this came out in two thousand and fucking four, literally within a year of the invasion of iraq. Incredible.
The best part of this entire movie is the director was super famous. He directed serious movies. He was tired of it and asked trey parker and matt stone to direct something he never did. He took the entire project seriously, and they just made it more and more ridiculous to see how he would react. But he never had a single note on the script. He just did the shots the way he wanted. Makes this movie so much more fantastic.
The main tribute this movie pays is to Gerry Anderson. He is responsible for various shows from the 60s that incorporated marionettes like World Police. He did some live action shows like Space 1999, but he's mainly known for shows like Thunderbirds and several others. Here's a link to show you just how detailed his worlds got. This was really a lot of fun watching you crack up on this reaction. One of my favorites you've done so far. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X16gTFJ9YhU.html
The were able to get away with so much, during filming they took it so far, that when the studio saw the edited version, they didn’t have a huge problem with it 🤣 pure genius
My favorite part of the movie is when Sarah goes into the bar in Cairo: "Gary?" [terrorists yelling, pulling out weapons] [Sarah opens fire and kills them all] "Gary?"
Here to give this video another view cause it’s hilarious. Also think mello would love the episode on Comedy Central about South Park called 7 days to air. It shows how they literally make the episodes so close to deadline and it’s really interesting
