I Paid $12 For a BROKEN Super Mario DS Lite - And I FAILED! This Nintendo Super Mario Special Edition DS Lite had a broken hinge and a scratches on the case so I decided to replace the case. I managed to get the ribbon cables through the hinge without damage... but unfortunately my luck didn't last through the end of the project. It just goes to show that even when you have a lot of experience sometimes mistakes happen.

About This Video: I paid $12 for this broken Nintendo Super Mario DS Lite from a lot of other handhelds. It actually works fine but the case hinge is broken so I decided to replace the case with another Super Mario case. Overall the replacement was successful... I got the ribbon cables out of the old case and into the new one without too much trouble. But even people who do these types of repairs all the time can sometimes make mistakes. Oh well, it still looks better than it did.

I've fixed a load of these and often paid for replacement cases from the same place. The Limited Edition Zelda ones are beautiful as are the black ones, however I bought that exact Mario one to build a DS Lite for my son (who's a Mario obsessive!) and I have to admit it was poor quality...very thin translucent plastic, a darker shade and a bit 'squidgy'. 16 months down the line and those buttons have no print on them!
@insanedruid3143

Yeah that plastic looks like it is the cheepest crap available. Wrong color, transparent, and that ultra cheepo chines plastic looks. The old case had style, it had scars that showed it was loved. Now it looks like a clone at best.

Painting the undersides of the shell should eliminate that transparency and as a bonus, if you pick the right shade of grey, it will darken the colour to the same shade of red as the original.

When I saw the title, I though "how in the world could he fail to fix this" and when you fired it up at the start I was very confused. But truthfully, you did fix this. I did the same exact hinge fix yesterday, the first time I've ever done something like this. It was a real pain and the new housing proved to be of low quality, but the worst of all was the condition in which the original screws were, and the ones which came with the new housing weren't in much better condition. In the end all kind of worked, but the bottom half doesn't close properly at the lower left corner. But I've to the conclusion that it's not perfect, but better than it was before with the broken hinge, so I'm mostly happy with it. Great video 😊

Oh wow I like these type of video's. I recently just wanted to find out about how to fix Handhelds or home consoles because I watched most of your videos and now I got the idea on how to repairs things at your own pace and using the right tools. On the video that you've posted today was quite interesting because when you replaced the shell on the DS Lite, you were doing it carefully but mostly when I repair anything that doesn't work or broken somehow I end up making it worse, but as mentioned in the comments and the video, you were honest about this and as we are human, things are not always perfect in life and we must not get too alarmed about it. But I do like your videos and I'll make sure to support your channel. I want to say more about this but I don't want it to be too long for you to read the whole paragraph as it will take ages lol, but keep it up though Steve and I'll make sure to comment more on future videos as your content is great.

I have Xbox 360 E, and as you know this model has AVI out port which looks like you can use a regular AVI cable on it, but the problem is whenever I use a normal cable I do not get a picture on TV (it is barely visible with a lot of noise) so the question is: Is there any kind of chip or trick used in original Microsoft cable that makes the device give a picture only on it, since the original one and the one used with regular TV satellite receiver have the same look, one side is single and the other side is red, yellow and white and both looks exactly the same ?

A suggestion for the ribbon cables that are spiraled around in hinges: I've seen bobby pins used to "tighten" the spiral enough for an easy removal/replace. And I took a needle and thread to get my speaker cable under the card slot. (Tied the thread around the cable in a simple knot). Just some ideas next time you encounter these hurdles.

I've re-shelled a couple ds lites and those L&R buttons are really hard! If the bad thing was the screw poking through,I don't think you failed.

Lol I was expecting something much worse like snagging the ribbon cable... Just a happy little mistake and it still functions. Still a win.

I love that you left in your mistake, most youtubers would edit it out. Makes me feel a little better about some of my previous screw ups! (Pun intended lol) 🤘

Your thumb made everything look perfect :D. On my DS Lite the digizer didn't work when I put it together. Everyone makes mistakes. And yes, the shell doesn't look very good anyways. Thanks for the entertainment.

Where the heck did you get that angled pointed hook that you're using to remove the rubber pads at 1:45? It's not in my IFixit Pro pack and not listed in any of the tools from the link provided. That one is much more precise with the multiple knuckles than the hook that comes with the IFixit bundle.

Maybe try to heat it with you soldering torch thing to soften the plastic and flatten the little bump. I used a hair dryer to straighten my warped pickgaurd on my guitar and it worked great.

I have a low success rate fixing DS lites too. Sometimes I will replace something and then another component will break or fail. Usually the screens LOL.

It may be a bit of a fail, but really when working on a DS when the top screen gets involved and everything goes perfectly with the ribbon cable that's still a win in my book. Also you missed a perfect pun opportunity, "I could have gotten another shell, but screw it"
@GabrielSorrow

Check to make sure it charges. I broke the em10 chip just under the charge port using an aftermarke shell. I just bridged the pads and it charges now but I don't know if it will damage the ds over time. I went with a black and red look for my ds lite, black outer shell with red inner shell.

paint the inside with a paint that will make the color closer to the factory one. Also you can use a little heat to slowly push that screw indentation back in an air station with variable heat should work you want to soften the plastic not melt it.

An easy fix for the see through plastics is to use spray paint to reduce the transparency. In this case, a few layers of white on the inside would help a lot. Make the dark red be more the same as the original color. Overall, I'm not a fan of the aftermarket replacement cases/frame. The overall quality just isn't there, period. Flimsy, thin and lightweight.

Fill it with some nail varnish close to the colour, won't be abs flawless but certainly a lot easier than messing around with a new shell piece. Or some clear glue and paint pen over that or repurpose it and put a little LED in there hehe
