I'm creating a social media app called Dilemaa and the problem was that I am really bad at UI UX design. So I went to Fiverr and paid a Figma designer to design my app and the results are amazing. I can't believe I only paid $200 for such high quality service and results. I'm so happy with my experience and excited to see where my app is going.

I like the video so much, the edit, the sounds, the music, everything it's so good. BTW, do you happen to know a good way to get a job as a ui/ux designer? freelance or not its okay, I believe I'm a bomber designer but I'm a bit lost on what to do next, I'd be so thankful if you can advise me if you got any ideas 🙏🏻✨

I'm not an expert, but I think it depends on your reputation and portfolio. I personally paid a ui/ux designer who had a lot of experience, so having a strong portfolio and reputation is key (at least for me as a client). If you already have this, I would say there are millions of companies and startups who need a ui/ux designer, and you can maybe apply there or become a freelancer. But like I said, I'm not an expert and I'm just saying from my personal POV.

@BenKimmn I hope I can be of help then. I'm a CS major, and I've been looking for an interesting and valuable project to work on for some time. If "Dilemma" could be it, I would be honored to join your team. (My tech stack is Flutter btw).

Thanks for your interest! We are actively recruiting developers in the team and we use React Native to build the MVP. Would you be opened to learn React Native? If so, visit our website (dilemaa.com) and send us a request through "Join Our Team" tab

@BenKimmn Oh wow, thank you, but I don't think I'm ready to change my tech stack just yet. I just checked your website, and I saw positions for a uiux designer, I could apply if that's still something needed in your team? My goal is to add value wherever I am.

amazing content, Ben! I have learnt a lot and many of my previous doubts in my mind that i could not find answers are all well explained! I have 3 questions: what is the difference between an intern and a worker? if i were less skilled than the intern, would it be bad and not make any sense? Secondly, how much are start-up founders at the very early stage supposed to pay to interns who are probably really skilled? i have a perception that students from top colleges are able to earn a solid 30 usd per hour by tutoring with like SAT and therefore the minimal money that i have to pay them is 30 usd per hour which is a lot. even 15 usd per hour is a lot. Thirdly, how am i able to find these interns? Usually websites that write ‘ML/ AI students and experts from MIT/ Stanford… usually asks A LOT’. Hope that you may answer my doubts. Thank you!

I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I'll explain the three questions from my understanding: 1. The difference between an intern and a worker is that intern usually has a set period of time of working for the company. It doesn't matter if the intern is part-time or full time, there will be a duration for them to work, and after that, they are not associated with the company. 2. How much you pay for interns depends on their crucialty in the team. How important are they in your team? After that, it depends on how much you can pay. Fortunately, in my state, there is a program where the government pays 1 to 1 match of what I pay. So, if I am planning to pay an intern $6,000 for the next 12 weeks, I only need to pay $3,000, and the government will pay the rest. It is tough to still pay $3,000 out of your own pocket, so it is a good idea to get grants from competitions or funds from friends and family. You can always try to find a technical cofounder and share equity with them instead of paying interns thousands. Or you can label the internship as unpaid, but the more skilled the intern is, the less likely they will take that offer unless the company is well-known. 3. You can find interns through your network by reaching out to them. Or if you're in school or college, visit hackathon or coding clubs and network there. You can talk to entrepreneurship advisors and ask them if they can research people who would be interested in joining your team. Or you can use LinkedIn, YC match, or just hire a freelancer from websites like TopTal, Upwork, or Fiverr. *If you truly need an intern and that intern needs to be from a top university, the process might be tougher than others. On the other hand, if you don't think you need interns or hire them from top universities, you can always hire freelancers, find cofounders, or find interns in other universities.

Im going to be very clear. What you are doing and saying in this video is incredibly disrespectful to UX/UI Designers. First of all, $5k - $10k for the landing page (store front) of your business to be designed PROPERLY is actually nothing. How much do you intend to make off of this business? How many customers do you intend to have interact with that webpage/site on a daily basis? How do you want them to feel about that site IN COMPARISON to your COMPETITORS? Yeah....i thought so. In fact, $10k is a steal when you think about the business impact. Next, JUST a few designs? The amount of work that goes into making these designs is insane. Lets put learning the tools on to the side bar, for now, and just talk about the process. If done properly, and your business is ACTUALLY as innovative as you think it is, we will have to do market penetration testing and demographic construction. Were talking about Ethnographic Analysis, Surveys, Interviews, Ecological Observations, Ideal and Near Competitor Analysis and Heuristic Analysis....and this is just for the intended product CONCEPT - we havent even gotten to the web design yet. Just real quick, before we continue, what do you think the business impact is of ANY ONE of those studies being performed incorrectly? Again, i thought so. Once we understand how the product fits in the market, how problems have already been solved and how users expect to inteact with that product, we then have to design the interface and platform FOR the product. We are talking about Usability Testing, User Recordings, Wireframimg, Journey Mapping, Affinity Mapping, Divergence/Convergence Generation, mockups, mid-fidelity testing, feature card sorting, MORE prototypes, wireframes and A/B tests for feature effectiveness, data analysis, more surveys and google lighthouse to check that the architecture runs well. Have your eyes begun to bleed yet just reading this? I hope so. Then, AND ONLY THEN, can we generate a final, high fidelity prototype thay demands all of its own testing and tweaking before inplementation. On implementation, we, as designers, will probably want to use component libraries, which COST MONEY, not because we're lazy, but because we need design consistency and ACCESSIBILITY to be prioritized. We need to ensure that when you hire on SWEs (Software Engineers) that they have an existing design framework that they can refer to that will allow them to make easy, effective, changes to the product ecosystem without forcing a user to endure a broken platform for however long. We need every added component or feature to fit within the design paradigm that we have implemented and we need new designers to have a minimized training period to reduce overhead while maximizing output for the business and user. We DO ALL OF THIS and you want to give us $300? For the full service? Gtfoh. Im glad you found someone to help you on fiver, but i guarantee, i mean ABSOLUTELY guarantee, that they did not take the proper time or diligence with your contract. What you got is a cookie-cutter template that is worth less than the $300 you paid because theyve got bills to pay.

Thank you for your detailed comment. I sincerely apologize if my statements in the video seemed to undervalue the critical role of UX/UI designers. Please allow me to clarify a few points to better convey my position and the context of my startup. Firstly, I fully acknowledge the extensive work and expertise that goes into UX/UI design. The studies and processes you outlined, such as market analysis, usability testing, and high-fidelity prototyping, are of course invaluable. However, as a college student leading a startup, my financial resources are currently limited. The majority of our funding needs to be allocated to essential development and operational costs to ensure our product reaches the market. In the video, my intention was not to suggest that UX/UI designers are unworthy of their fees but rather to express the financial constraints I faced at this early stage and that I was satisfied with the results with limited budget. Our decision to opt for a more budget-friendly design solution was purely due to these constraints and not a reflection of the value we place on professional design services. Regarding the design work for our MVP, our current focus is to test core functionalities and product-market fit. This phase does not yet require the full scope of design services but rather a foundational interface that allows us to gather user feedback and iterate quickly. I want to assure you that as our startup grows and our financial situation improves, investing in comprehensive and professional UX/UI design services is a priority. We are committed to creating a product that not only meets but exceeds user expectations in terms of both functionality and user experience. Lastly, I appreciate your passion and the insights you've shared. They serve as a valuable reminder of the importance of design in digital products. Thank you for your understanding and for the opportunity to clarify our position.
