I painted my brake calipers (and I think you're going to hate the colour)

Last (for a while) in this little sidetrack of a project, while I refurb some very crusty old BMW Z3 front hubs and calipers. Was it worth it? Almost certainly not. Did it give me something practical to do? It did.
And I'm quite pleased with the result...for quick and cheap job. If was going to do this properly, I could have bought some new calipers, and spent a lot longer prepping and smoothing the hubs. But these will now last for years and they look a hell of a lot better than what was on there before.
Big thanks for all the feedback and tips on this little set of episodes. I've bought some better penetrating oil, am considering some big buckets of rust remover, and I really want to look into electroplating and nickel coatings now.
But that's all for the future. For now, I'm pretty sure most of you are going to hate the colour of the calipers, which might be politely called 'shiny rust' and at worst might be called 'baby $#!£'! But I'm quite fond of it. The camera maybe doesn't get it but when the sun hits them, they're really quite bronze, which is kind of the look I was going for. Shame the sun won't be hitting anything around me for the next six months...

Ultimately colour is a personal preference Tom. You have got a decent finish on them too.

Cheers Tony. Not bad for some boat anchors.

Not sure why anyone would dislike sparkley turd brown. 😊

I can imagine the marketing meeting to name the paint colours now!

in related news: the soft porn music is on point in this video, or so I'm told

Funny story with that music. The track I put in originally got a copyright strike, even though it is licence free and I've been using it for years. So I had to change it and do so very quickly!

😂 I love how you spent so much time cleaning up the rusty calipers to paint them rust colour. Only kidding. Looks great, hope it lasts. I never had much luck with hammer rite. 2k epoxy mastic is my go too followed by any top coat. Keeps the rust away I find. (Jotun 90 for example)

I think I'll go that route with future ones if they're in better condition to start with. The Hammerite does a nice job of hiding all the pitting!

if I lived in the [ahem] "North", I would apply a light coat of Phosphoric acid do those iron parts and leave it, I would not neutralize it afterwards with baking soda for a number of reasons, among them, the modern day retail Phosphoric acid sold as Prep & Etch at your local hardware store is already very much diluted and weak so in no way will eat those huge chunks of iron, I have done this on an old vice and an old anvil I keep outside year round with good results, they don't rust, another reason not to paint calipers obviously is to help them dissipate heat, but we are talking about race track performance and you should be more than fine on the cool streets of the "North" fugly paint or not, ha ha, jk

Ha! Yeah with the range I have right now, I don't think overheating is going to be a problem. Especially with the liquid cooling provided by the weather!

Let's hope you'll have luck with the Febi Bilstein parts. They are a bit hit and miss (and Febi Bilstein does not have anything to do with (very high quality) Bilstein) 👀 I like to spend the extra Euro and buy ATE parts for the brakes if possible.

They are very much middle of the road. I looked at the ATE and FAG parts but couldn't justify the extra 30-50% in price on this project.

@@EVDIY I see your point. For me personally it's different because I don't have the energy to do something twice, that's why I usually bite the bullet and buy the quality parts, even if they are 2x the price. Something breaking AGAIN or not fitting/working right just causes too much mental stress for me 😖😖

Ha! You could have saved a lot of effort and just sprayed laquered the rust! 😂 Back in the 80s I was vey much into painting the underneath of a car in gloss white, the axles red, suspension green, brake parts blue, etc. At least with yours you won't see the dirt, much. 😉
