Healthcare costs are artificially high primarily due to barriers to entry (supply restrictions), demand that is artificially high due to lack of rationing by price, and the lack of incentives for cost control due to the continued growth of government spending for healthcare. These are all examples of the failure of state intervention/central planning.

One of the simplest economics lessons I've seen in my 70+ years --it should be in every school. I offered to supply a copy for each of the 7th and 8th grade students in two private schools but neither accepted --one said it was" too sophistidated" and the other wouldn't even talk to me about it. Economics to most schools is not worthy subject matter. No wonder that our people are so ignorant of how the world works. it sure makes the career politicians job of conning the electorate much easier.

@8235 The consumer is willing to pay X. Therefore, you put the price as X. Simple as that. If the consumer were only willing to pay 0.5X, then you charge 0.5X, for otherwise you get no money. The amount of copies in existence don't matter, and the source code has no inherent value, only how much people are willing to pay for it.
This video-essay and the study of economics (which I just started) changes the way we observe the world and should certainly affect our political views or voting preferences. Price controls, bankruptcy mitigation, endless government subsidization, and any form of socialism is both self-defeating and self destructive. This is a great video, it really puts into perspective what level of cooperation we can come to on a global scale for a measly ten cents per pencil. They should note, however, pencils existed as far back as 1564. Modern pencils are more convenient but don't require this level of collaboration to function, Not to mention the voluntary use of the whip on workers to encourage quota allocation and deadlines in Chinese mines, voluntarily set by the plant manager, is part of the family tree too.

It is an impossibility to have vast trade in an anarcho-capitalist society. It would always be small scale because trust would be lowered. It would be impossible for vast groups of people to come together and cooperate and agree how to settle disputes. That is why government is necessary. Assuming you want prosperity.
This is a rather clear and well presented definition of FREE MARKET CAPITALISM. Perhaps we could send a copy to our "Emperor" and those that spend their lives focused on envy of the accomplished.
"Voluntary" is a key word here. In today's world all of the interactions required to make a pencil aren't necessarily voluntary. I hope that one day they might be, but they aren't yet. This is what we need to work towards.

"Mass consumerism" is a process of people saying that a portion of what they produce is worth a commodity or service. If the resource becomes more scarce, the price goes up, and less people consume it. That is a simple fact of pricing. It is a means by which the market rations resources, while simultaneously making sure that people involved in production achieve a standard of living for producing things people need/want.
This film does little visually to help teach/reinforce the words of the essay. The visuals only loosely (and symbolically) relate to the messages in the text. For younger viewers and/or those less familiar with the concepts in I, Pencil you need clearer, more-tangible visuals that help comprehension and retention of the ideas. I guess to be more specific, the majority of animations in this film are various images of the pencil, the parts of the pencil, fractured pencils flying apart and morphing back together. Symbolically accurate, but not helpful for many learners.
Wonderful! Beautiful graphics and a great way of telling the story of human cooperation. It is best to ignore those that are confounded by simple truth. So focus on a great story well told -- and don't argue about it. Most people, if they don't know, there's no way you can tell them.
