I Pushed my Camper Van Too Far

In this video I take my camper van and join a convoy of 4x4 vehicles exploring some of the Green Lanes in northern England. Unfortunately a couple of the lanes were too rough for my van and I had a tough time. The first half of this video does not represent what I had hoped for with green laning, however day 2 was perfect as we explores tracks that were far more suitable for me and in much better condition. Green laning is a great way to have fun and see the countryside and should always be practiced responsibly. For more information on Green Laning: www.glass-uk.org/

I think you can take some consolation form the fact that the Hi-Lux got stuck too! When I was a lot younger I drove a bog standard 1960s BL saloon car along a green lane and inevitably got stuck. The farmer who came over to tow me out was somewhat blunt in his assessment of my brain power :-). You, however had a mostly suitable car and were with a team who could rescue you and will likely enjoy telling the tale in the pub for a while! And most things that are super stressful for those of us with a certain type of personality are much less so the next time!

Before I emigrated to Australia I was a regular, hardcore green-laner and also did RTV trials in a heavily modified Land Rover 90. I was actually really impressed with what the Delica managed to do - obviously way beyond what it is expected to do on a daily basis. Nice to know you have a lot in reserve when driving an average gravel/muddy track.

A 50mm lift kit, 31’s, bash plates and steep approach front bumper gets you through all that stuff pretty easily. But it’s a heavy vehicle loaded up and those kinds of roads will put extra stress on stock steering and suspension components. Sorry to say this Thomas but all those ruts that you are getting stuck in have been caused by the very vehicles your friends are driving, and going around just extends the damage. I mention this because a good friend of mine who owns a farm with a green lane passing through it and he gets so frustrated with the damage caused. I hope someday the Green laners will have the decency to pay for repairs to the lanes they ruin. Still love your photography though. P.S. yes I can be a comudgley old fart who cares about the planet.
@geraintevans4748
@geraintevans4748 3 года назад
@The Northern Explorer With respect to you there are 3 issues here: 1.The ruts were there and flooding is a huge issue. I’m sure you personally do a good job but the issue of damage to our uplands goes far beyond repairing ruts. 2. We are in the midst of a world climate crisis, the evidence is world wide and there is no way, at any level that driving large carbon using and emitting vehicles is good . 3. Mr Heaton has rightly and repeated called on photographers to respect the environment yet here he is promoting an activity which is simply, despite you and perhaps him filling in ruts, not compatible with his claims to address environmental concerns.

@The Northern Explorer so the fact that ‘someone else’ green laning drove through that really bad rutting causing the damage absolves you of any damage you may cause going over the track, don’t think so. A responsible person would have turned back, but I am not naive enough not to realise that most of the excitement and experience of G/L. Is the thrill of getting through the really bad heavy stuff, why else would you do it, it’s not for the scenery really is it?

They’ll usually know how to get you through most issues and problems, but boy did you push the limits. Not sure I would have tackled that in my Everest, but hey well done mate - respect 👍👏. Do you have rated recovery points on the front for the snatch-strap? They’re usually what you get fitted to the chassis and will generally be strong enough to avoid any vehicle damage on recovery (if you have a tow-bar you can also have a tow-hitch and shackle for reverse recovery (under no circumstances should you use the tow-ball - very dangerous & not designed for recovery).

At a time when we are looking at landscape photography and the effect of travel, NFTs, over saturation of people in various sections and our overall environmental impact I think its time we started examining 'green laning' and its impact on the Lakes. There is already talk of the Lakes losing their world heritage status due to the issue. My wife's family lived on a small holding on the top of a fell and towards the end of their time there it got to the stage that there would be long queues of large 4x4s going through their yard. The lanes at Tilberthwaite are like a motorway some days with queues of vehicles going over. The Lakes are being turned into one big theme park and its one reason why I moved away last year. I love your work but whilst green lining may be legal its not something that I believe should be happening in the Lake District.
@CalumRaasay
@CalumRaasay 2 года назад
Agreed. these roads and tracks are in such a state partly because of these off-roaders.
@martinjn2920
@martinjn2920 2 года назад
A good comment and somewhat thought provoking. ‘Green-laning’ is legal therefore people are entitled to use the lanes, but their use is damaging the immediate environment and as none of the vehicles used are ‘green’, in fact they are the complete opposite, they are contributing to a wider environmental issue. So yes action needs to be taken, not just in the Lakes but in other places as well, the issue is going to be getting sufficient support to get an act through Parliament closing green lanes to motorised vehicles.
@mea03wjb
@mea03wjb 2 года назад
Agreed. Seeing black smoke pour out of the back of a 4x4 as its wheels rip through one of our most precious environments for the purposes of entertainment or a few more subscribers is upsetting. For someone who photographs these beautiful places it is a disappointing subject for the latest upload.

I wouldnt say its for the purpose of entertainment, most people that enjoy a green lane do so for the sense of adventure and challenge and knowing Thomas it was a combination of both. The places you photograph will not change because of the odd green laner.

Carry some ten foot by twelve inch by two inch boards with you. If you have four of them, put them down in front of your wheels with some four by fours to go under the ten foot boards. Sometimes you need six boards for larger areas. You drive up on the boards and with six you keep moving the boards in front of the vehicle until you are out of the mud. I used to help friends, who decided to drive across the salt flats in Utah and they would be a couple of hundred yards out on the flats stuck in the mud. It takes a while with six boards to slowly move them back to dry land, but a tow truck would cost hundreds of dollars to do it. The salt flats look solid but the water table is very high and you sink down into the mud and the vehicle is on the frame. You have to use boards to Jack up the vehicle then keep the tires on boards until the vehicle is on dry land.

I fully agree with you. I like a vehicle to get me somewhere that I want to go for a purpose. Just driving to prove that the vehicle can make it doesn’t appeal.

I would have been stressed to the max as well! So much could have gone worse! Next green lane adventure will be easier on the nerves!

How do you get drone b-roll while moving the van? Even on automatic it's got to be difficult to lift off and land

"Too nervous to think about camera work"....I feel your pain. After balancing my Xterra on two (diagonally opposite) wheels one time too many in Colorado, I was just thankful to get out in one piece (more or less). The photographs I took that afternoon were all rubbish--I'll just have to go back, perhaps.

I am glad the camper van survived. I too get too stressed out with that kind of driving. The camper van is not that easy to just replace if things go wrong and its how you make your living. Glad everything worked out..

Green lanes are old routes meant to be used by horse and cart not 4x4 vehicles. 4X4 vehicles are the cause of all of the worst damage to the green lanes, not either environmentally or for local walkers. As a landscape photographer why would you want to add to the damage ?

these are legal rights of way, a road that any vehicle that is road legal can drive or ride along I applaud Tom for showing the green lanes on the UK, walkers have so many places to walk why do you want to stop a very small minority it disgusts me that the ramblers think they own the whole of the UK country side

Gentlemen, your negative statements, and personal feelings as to what modes of transportation and recreation should and should not be enjoyed, are yours to have, and please keep them to yourself. Now, that is unless you have evidence that Tom and his mates were knowingly traversing on a “Green Lane” that was designated as a “Footpath”, “Bridleway”, or “Restricted Byway”, and therefore illegal in those circumstances to drive a motorized vehicle. I see no evidence to support that any laws were broken, just a front bumper. The main classification of “Green Lanes” is a byway open to all users and all types of traffic. However, as they are unsurfaced, they are often only passable in a 4x4 or on a trail motorbike, mountain bike, as well as pedestrians and horse riders. I’m trying to not share my opinion as to what I personally feel. However, we all have beliefs, and opinions, teams… it’s part of being Human, and unfortunately, spreading false information to support one’s beliefs goes along with that. If you’re going to be negative, can you please support your arguments with at least some easily retrievable facts and evidence that would make someone feel that your argument is maybe worth considering. Hope to all, have a great rest of your day, Cheers!

@Dead Head you will find if you take time to do some homework most green road riders/drivers will only go out in very small groups, I am a member of the the TRF and we only ever go out in small groups of no more than 6 so where you get 400 from is a mystery, please if you have proof of 400 drivers/riders on one green road in on day I would love to see it

@Dead Head lol do you actually ever walk around the lake district? its the walkers and their parking that do ALL of the damage that you can actually see. If you think a few eroded back lanes has got shit on the damage done by people walking on the fells then you are deluded.

I was shopping for a minivan this year and had narrowed it down to a Delica and a Toyota Alphard. I went with the Alphard because it’s a more comfortable ride on roads where I drive 99.9% of the time. But I definitely have some regrets not going with the Delica when I watch these videos. I did get one with AWD though, so I can at least drive it in the snow.

A tip from an Aussie, you should seriously invest in some recovery tracks, they're super cheap insurance for getting you out of all sorts of trouble! Light weight and lots of uses especially solo (mount them until of your ammo box). Google 'why buy 4wd recovery tracks/boards' and spend 5 mins reading some sites. They're designed for sand but insanely helpful in mud, gravel, and great for cars without lockers as you can pack up the wheels using them. And super cheap. Remember it ain't an adventure if it doesn't go wrong haha!! That's the whole fun:). You've definitely got a good attitude about it though. Love the content as always.
