that ratio on a 26" wheel will climb a tree. Derailleur is hanging mighty low for trails, but definitely enticing for 26mtb bike packing
@thebr0wnhornet
@thebr0wnhornet 3 года назад
Going through that now trying to do 1x on a 26” mtb. After adding a wolf tooth type derailleur extension the bottom pulley is an inch from the rim. Might go back to the 32t cassette and run 2x
@nikolaibohachevsky2301
@nikolaibohachevsky2301 3 года назад
Yeah that seems overkill with the lower ratio you get from a smaller 26 wheel; could easily get away with a 34 tooth chain ring up front. But I dont like the long derailleur cage either. What’s wrong with a 9spd wide range cassette and shorter derailleur cage. Like the MicroShift Advent setup…love that drive train.
@thebr0wnhornet
@thebr0wnhornet 3 года назад
@RollinRat I mean my setup works just might rip the derailleur on a rock someday. 36t up front 12-46 micro shift acolyte 8 spd, using the Deore derailleur and shifter that were on the bike. $30 cassette, $6 for the wolf tooth, $20 for a cheap narrow wide

Eric, much love, but, please don't disrespect Shimano... They DEFINITELY stand for reasonably priced bikes and their mid grade stuff is bullet proof for a lot less than SRAM. NOW, don't get me wrong, SRAM makes fabulous stuff, but I've never been willing to throw the extra money at it, when Shimano does it SO WELL for the price.

I agree shimano makes some really good stuff however they also make some pretty sub par components as well. The new 12 speed road groupo’s are so finicky. If your hanger is not dead straight it won’t shift for shit. Also any of there cable actuated road shifter chew thru the cables way to fast. This is just from my experienced being a full time mechanic at a bike show though. And I have not seen this personally but there cranks delaminating seems far to common and they haven’t done shit about any of those problems for many years.
@jonathancairns9944
@jonathancairns9944 3 года назад
@@maddoxmcpherson3731 I totally agree with you about Shimano's top tier, the cranks are shoddy, unreliable, epoxy nonsense, but Tiagra cannot be disrespected, nor Deore. Fucking workhorses. Only weight weenies, with big budgets, suffer the consequence and they can have them.
@jonathancairns9944
@jonathancairns9944 3 года назад
Old Deore and 9 peed road Shimano are SIS, and that makes for simple, cheap, big range 2x setups, because you can mix older Deore with more modern Sora road levers. If you're riding more then 9 speed out back and you have more gear range than my 2003 XTR 3x9, than I ask you... Are you really riding a reasonably priced bike?

Nice! I can recommend the Shimano XT M8000 series as well, you can find them used for a reasonable price and the rd can be serviced in like 30min. I've swapped multiple bikes with it, the latest being a 26" with a 42 single front (fsa vero) and a 11-46 m8000 in the rear (the cassette can be a cheaper one, you don't need the expensive xt cassette).

Love the bike design ru-vid.comUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L and functionality. It is hard to align the front tired to center the disk brakes. The brake wheel touches the stationery side of the brake caliper and pad. I aired the tire up to 40 psi as the markings say 40-60psi. Left the house for a few hours and came back to an exploded innertube.All in all it seems to be a good bike. Have not ridden it yet though so that's the max of my knowledge. Update, put a new innertube made sure the tire was set properly and it did the same thing in under 20 minutes as second pic shows.

I’m in a similar situation, I have a Cannondale lefty I’m rebuilding as my pimp hardtail bike, but then I have 2 super nice, super clean mid-late 90’s mountain bikes, and I’m going to start building a replica of my first mountain bike, so I’m going to end up with 3 rigid, 10-12 speed mountain bikes, plus I have a GT Avalanche I plan to make into a 26” BMX like yours, but my biggest and most exciting build will be a Klunker I’m planning. Disc brake conversion, maybe sprung front, maybe solid, not sure, some nice steel wheels with a 1 x 12 most likely, balloon tyres, I’m really keen for that!

The bike is solid and my Ebike conversion went great. ru-vid.comUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Very smooth ride at 30mph with no problems (135 miles ridden so far). The picture is a bit deceiving - there is WAY less space in the center of the frame than it shows. The suspension connection takes up the entire thing. So I needed to attach my battery on the bottom of the frame and my controller on the top. Instructions for assembly were lacking but honestly it wasn't too hard to figure out even though I have very little bike knowledge. Watched some youtube videos on adjusting the disk brakes but that was it. Still, I am loving it and very happy with the purchase.

While I've gotten comments on the long cage, I've been through some brush and it seems to be tucked in well enough to avoid snagging anything, though I plan more bikepacking than trail riding on this bike anyway.

Very jealous. I tried swapping the freehub body on my 7-speed hub but I wasn't so lucky. Mine has some weird interface that's apparently rare so I couldn't find a single one that matches. And I tried at least half a dozen. So I cobbled together a Frankenstein monster of a freehub body from the original and one other, using the bigger 8/9/10-speed shell and I just BARELY managed to screw it together. Still haven't summed up the courage to actually mount it back on the wheel and try it out though.

I did have to re-dish the wheel a little so the brakes didn't rub after I adjusted the cones for freehub clearance. Had the same issue you had with bottom bracket too, I'd forgotten that you needed 3 different tools to remove those old school BB's and my 2 pin spanner is lost somewhere in the sands of time. 2 finish nails in a chunk of scrap 1x2 did the trick for me (after I failed with vice grips and needle nose pliers) Modern BB's sure spoil you for ease of install/uninstall.

There's something really satisfying about a well built BB. Took apart a campy BB on a 1970 Raleigh that had been used as a commuter in Oregon. The outside was super grimy but inside was squeaky clean, the grease hadn't even discolored at all. The cups had a threading pattern where the spindle goes through that keeps dirt out.

With quadruple and quintuple custom cranksets, it would be possible to get rid of huge frying pans on the rear hub, especially on the tiny 26" wheel of a retro mtb, because, as Jan Heine wrote, «Now the time has finally come to go beyond three chainrings». A really modern bike with a really modern solution is not a 1x12 drivetrain, but was already presented in 1973 at the Salon de Cycle in Paris by Alex Singer.
