I've found that a bait runner reel coupled with a fish finder rig comes in handy fishing the bottom for pretty much any species in salt water. Great video!

Beach Bum!! I like to watch your video's. I'm from South Africa and here are some BIG sharks we catch from the surf. So good to see how you get exited when any fish is on! Maybe someday you can try our water around here. There is a guy that post good fishing video's on youtube...maybe you can have a look at Zoo Look Fishing. Use a Bait Runner Reel! They can take it with no drag resistance and when your ready set the hook. Much easier

Bama that is a water valve wrench. That's an awesome idea for removing hooks from a sharks mouth. I can remember reaching as close as I could get my cutters to a blue sharks mouth (about 10 footer.) and cut the leader. At night on my 21 ft boat 9ff southern California. Grandpa Jack

Looks like your drag is set just right imo. Tight enough to set the hook but loose enough that the pole holder does not rip out of the sand. :)

You ever think about getting a conventional reel to let fish free spool? Or a bait runner attachment on a spinning reel? I hate setting my drag super loose so I switch to a penn Senator and a Okuma spinning reel with a bait runner

Always enjoy watching your videos. Lived in San Diego for forty-three years and could be found surf fishing regularly. In K.C, MO now (glad to be here) and watching you brings back fond memories of fishing from dawn 'til well after dark. A question, please. Why do you not use a fighting belt or harness when hooking those large fish? It looks like it hurts, when you are pulling on that big surf rod. Thanks and tight lines.

What size Penn slammer was that being use for shark caught and pound braid I have Penn slammer 3 6500 high speed with Daiwa j braid x8 50 pound on mine thinking of using 60 pound afw nylon coated steel leader

The way I set my drag for sharks is just shy of being able to pull your rod up from the sand spike while only pulling on the line and not grabbing your rod, if that makes sense. I'd say probably 3-4lbs of drag tho I've never scaled it. I've also been crushing my barbs, which have helped with hookup ratios and makes it wayyyy faster to remove the hook . I would also suggest stepping up to at least an 8500 with 80lb braid with some kind of topshot, you would have had a much better chance of landing that spinner or tipper that jumped if you had the top shot. After losing so many giants I only use 10500s with 100lb hollow core and 100lb mono topshot. We've landed an 11ft tiger on these setups.

Fishing for big sharks by yourself is asking for problems. If your freind hadn’t come along that could have gone sideways in a hurry. That shark was just about handleable, anything bigger things can go wrong. Folks, if you want to go out and fish for big critters, take a buddy, and a tail rope. Love the channel, Matt!

You want your drag loose enough they can run with it. Tight drag in a rod holder is how you lose a rod.

Yeah gotta keep that distance. Out of the respect of other family, especially if you use braid its like a band saw ripping through the water. Sharks are thick out here. Im there with you on the drag. I like it loose because even on a loose setting they seem to still set the hooks. They kept cutting off my 80lb test but they had some size to them too
