I love how he starts yelling "IN THE BOOK" more and more cuz he _knows_ how annoying that is and he's just mad at himself for being that annoying. He has no choice. Annoying is the only right path.

The Martian and Annihilation are amazing movie adaptations. The Martian is almost exactly like the book. Annihilation has a lot of changes and a different ending, yet they did such a wonderful job it made me love it even more. The writers of both movies clearly cared about what they were adapting.

The closest movie/book combo is Matilda, mostly because Danny DeVito fought tooth-and-nail to keep it close.

It's one thing to be able to re-tell the plot of a movie really well because you can use clips, etc., but to re-tell a book really well, and describe it so well that not only is the listener able to picture the scenes well in their mind, but even after having the whole book "spoiled," still want to read the book, is a very impressive thing. I hope you do more of these!

You really hit perfectly on the issue I have with most book adaptations. It's not the minute details, or even more moderate plot changes (though those CAN get irritating), it's when the make changes to the CHARACTER that changes who they are. For instance, I understand that the Shining is considered an amazing movie and Kubrick is genius, etc. etc., but the fact that Jack Torrence is so different and how he died changed his entire arc completely gets under my skin. He is still a recovering alcoholic with anger issues in the book, but it's played much more as a father with issues who wants to do better but is struggling, even more so at the hands of the hotel. You feel empathy for this guy. I like Jack Nicholson as an actor, but he did NOT portray this version of Torrence. It was far more manic. And then, in the book, his beautiful arc is concluded by him using his brief moment of lucidness during the final chase and attack to CHOOSE to blow up the hotel and himself along with it in order to give his family the chance to escape. The movie? yea no, he froze to death trying to kill his son, no redemption, no nothing. SIIIIIIIIIIGH

This video has made me want to read the book. Always amazes me how often movie adaptations are completely botched

If this does become a series, I'd love to see both The Shining and Doctor Sleep. The Shining deviated heavily but is a masterpiece, and Doctor Sleep was far more faithful and very well done.

As someone who had been watching Dominic Noble and KrimsonRogue for years, seeing GG do a book vs movie comparison video is an unexpected but a most welcomed Christmas gift for me.

From my experience the book really is better than the movie about 8/10 times. A large part of that is usually due to the fact that when you read something you can picture it in the way that is most appealing to you, and another part is that books have more time to explore and create a scene/atmosphere than a movie does.

drugs in a rehab employees car is.... far from unheard of. I've been through rehab more than once (and things have been good for around 7 years now), and at both the rehabs I've been too, and even some of the hospital run detox centers, there has been issues with staff supplying addicts. At one rehab there was a lesbian employee who was sleeping with almost all the young female clients and suppling them mdma, coke, and mushrooms. Also have too say, only someone who has not spent time outside in snow at night would think if you turn off a flashlight you can't see. Its so easy to see in the dark with snow. It reflects a fuck ton of moon light and is such a contrast to a person it's almost impossible to lose someone. Yes, even in the woods.

I think this is a great and unique way of doing something different with movie reviews and I love it. If you enjoyed reading the book I would really like to see more things like this in the future !

As you started talking about the story it sounded really interesting so I paused the video and ordered the book online. After I got it I finished it in four days. I really enjoyed the book I often read it at the library (I know I'm an old person living in a young person's body). I'm so glad I read this book before making the impulsive decision of getting it all spoiled by mista gg. Thanks for getting me to read.

I guess a lot of people say the books are better because you can get way more into describing certain events in a book that you can in a movie.

I feel generally that media tends to be better in its original format bc it was made w its format in mind. This book especially is a psychological thriller that leans really heavily on the psychological part. A lot of the forward momentum of the book comes from Darby’s internal battles as she debates her next move knowing that any wrong move can get her and everyone around her killed. The movie is just… plucking events from the narrative and desperately jamming them together like puzzle pieces chosen from a set at random. Anyway… I’m going to go reread the book now 😃

THIS IS A GREAT BOOK. SO GLAD YOU AGREED. Everyone HAS to read it. It is insanely good. I read it a while ago and probably re read it at least 3 times... it doesnt get old even when you know the ending. Its probably one of my favourite thriller books and is so well written and the author really knows how to fully immerse you in the story. 10/10 reccomend this book to any lover of thrillers! I also didnt much like the movie as it didnt do any of the characters justice.

Two books' movies that are _very_ faithful to their books' source material are _Like Water For Chocolate,_ and _Psycho_ (author Robert Bloch was screwed out of the screenplay; he said the only thing he'd have changed would have tightened up the exposition at the end, otherwise it was extremely faithful except for the shower scene: in the original novella the murder is an end-of-chapter shock, conveying Marion seeing the knife, which "cut off her scream, and her head"...). Bob actually liked Hitchcock's version of the shower scene.

I really hate it when movies depict nail guns as being able to shoot nails like a hand gun. Nail guns only fire a nail when the nose of the gun is pressed against a hard surface.

Holy crap! You did such an amazing job with this recap. I saw this movie a few months ago and I wold love to see you do more of these mainly with movies that are closer to the book like “The Omen”, Firestarter, or movies that were popular but just incredibly different from the source material. I adore Story Time with Papa GG, this is brilliant and I will take this Book Vs. Movie twist as often as you would like to give it to us Edit to say: I think this is the reason a lot of suspense films (that are based on books) fall flat. Books allow for so much internal speculation between the characters and the audience, like being able to witness Darby's thought process. That alone builds tension. But in movies, it's a lot harder to achieve this, so it all feels rushed, mindless, and often times Idiotic: you're missing the lead up to the decision and WHY the character is doing that specifically.

This kinda reminds me of how people say that “The Manga is better then the Anime”. As someone who grew up with Anime. I used to hate people that would say that the Manga would be way better. As I’ve started to grow and get more into reading. I actually have to agree. A lot of the Writing and all Around Visuals are sooo much more detailed and get more in-depth then the Anime’s by a long shot. A lot of the Animation in the Anime can try and replicate scenes from the Pages of the manga, but just can’t get it down to the T. Best example is Junji Itos Manga’s Vs Anime Adaptations & Live Action Movie Adaptations. They just can’t replicate his masterpiece of an art style.

Funny thing, I became part of a book club a friend of mine made last month and this is the first book we read, and just yesterday, we had a discussion of the last seven chapters and we saw the movie immediately after the discussion, and I was also bugged by the inconsistencies, but then again, I wasn’t as bugged by these inconsistencies as much as I was about the Percy Jackson movies

haven’t watched the video yet, but this book is cheesy special to me because I was reading it when my partner and I started dating. he took an interest in it because I would tell him about it, so he read it also. then a few months later we were hanging out flipping through hulu and boom it was a movie (we didn’t know it was being adapted) so it was super fun being able to watch the movie and roast it together. from what I remember about both, I definitely liked the book better.

I saw the intro, bought the book, and read it in two days so I could come back and watch this. 😂 That’s how excited I get for Mista GG videos

I remember reading this book, and the fact that I made the mistake of starting it while at school, so I spent the entire day thinking about it and in suspense when I was in class and unable to read it 😂. I read it every spare minute I had until I finished it. I’m pretty sure it only took one day. Great book. 10/10 edge-of-your-seat feelings.

I think one thing that's really interesting with book adaptations is how they are adapted. Books are a great medium for introspective main characters, but it can be challenging to show in a very visual medium (e.g. why Jane Austen's "Persuasion" works much better as a book and hasn't yet had a successful adaptation). I think a lot of times when "the book was better", it's a case of the movie not having been adapted in a way that puts the medium at its strength. That being said, I think there are some movies that have retrospective changes that end up enhancing the story. E.g. I think "The woman in black" works better as a movie than as a book.

Okay no joke I bought the book because I liked the movie, AND it's on my 2023 reading list. I saved this to my "Watch Later" and I will be back in a couple months after I have read it. I will say thought a large number of "how to read more guides" highly recommend getting a book that a movie you like was based on, or even a book adaption of a movie (those are a thing). They say it helps you devote fewer mental resources to plot, and more to the nuances of character, language, etc. and can improve your overall reading skill.

you know a book is good when I teared up at your description of eds last stand. You know a movie is trash when the same scene made me chuckle

Usually the book is better, because the story was meant to be a book, not a movie. Alan Moore illustrates this very well when talking about the film adaptations of his iconic comics, V for Vendetta and Watchmen. Both adaptations failed because the story of both were meant specifically for the medium of comic books, not films. Also the V For Vendetta movie is extremely americanized, when the comic was inspired by some political events that were going on in Britain at the time, while the movie makes it more closer to 9/11. Just from this example, you can see how many book-to-film adaptations completely fail to hold the soul and integrity of it's source material.

So I suggested this book to my friends, we all read it then watched the movie. We all overwhelming agreed that book was much better (and a great read)! I loved your breakdown after the whole saga and the push to read this book in the first place!

Now I haven't read them, but I will say alot of spy & techno thriller books are often a little worse than they're film adaptation or so different as to be hard to compare.

I love this book vs movie idea for a series! I've always used American Psycho as an example of a movie being better than the book (the book is an exercise in tedium). Stephen King would be a good place to start since his books are easy reads that have WILDLY different kinds of adaptations in terms of quality. And in the case of The Shining you'd have two adaptations to compare, Kubrick's and King's own attempt.

In regards to the book, great story telling. Saw the movie a while back (it was ok) but you make the book sound way more interesting. Great job.

If this becomes a series, Jaws would be a good one to do. I the movie is drastically different than the book but I really enjoy both for their own different paths they go down.

My first real clash with a movie version of a book was The Maze Runner. I loved the books so much and was excited to watch the movies with my friend. I couldn't even make it halfway through the first movie before I had to tap out.

I loved the way the video was structured and your story telling is always top-notch, make not feasible but as a fan of your commentaries, I think more videos like this every now and then would be fantastic.

I always see movie adaptations as just companion pieces to a book and not really just a step by step straight copy of the book. I think a lot of people get upset when they just want the exact book in movie form.

The book is always better as a rule of thumb because you can just pack so much more information and detail into a book than you can a movie, it is also good because the reader gets to relate more intimately with the story, they read the words and generate the story in their own minds, whereas with shows and movies you're just a passenger to someone else's interpretation.

Years back the husband and I got these reading lamps that were apparently marketed for breastfeeds in the night. They are actually amazing lamps though. Two little bunny ear lights that can be bended and shaped however you want, a soft but very strong clip, multiple choices of illumination. If you want a really great headlamp I’d look at these. They’re a little pricy at $20.00 per, but we’ve had them for years now and use them almost daily and they are still plunking along. You can find them in the book isle of target 🎯

Christine was a much better movie, as was the Shining. John Carpenter and ....Other great director. literally my fave but drawing s blank his name... dont do drugs kids. They made great movies. This shitty movie adaptation actually did some good, I actually got pretty interested in No Exit and bought the book for myself. Then I bought Hairpin Bridge and just finished reading The Last Word. Taylor Adams got himself at least one new fan from Mista GG dumpstering all over the movie adaptation.

If you continue this as a series, you should do a comparison between the book and film version of Bullet Train (aka Maria Beetle) since there are some drastic differences between the two and the movie received decent praise/attention. It’d be interesting to hear your opinion on the characters each medium decided to put more focus on.

Spent the past few days binging your Predator chronicles for the first time. Love you GG! Thanks for the laughs!

Oh my Lord the sudden drug addict and criminal characterization pisses me off. With the stress Darbbie goes through during the entire debaucle, no wonder she's slamming red bulls, if she feels she's slipping she could be dead. Sure there is an inkling during the story, hinting at something possibly criminal, but that is not the focus of the story. It just feels like the director, or the studio decided "You know what, not enough suspense in this thing, don't worry I'll fix it" It feels disrespectful. And also, like, a caffeine addiction does not a drug addict make, not to mention that taking ecstasy once doesn't immediately equate to addict and criminal. I would have said that that change was sinister in nature but then I saw how bad pretty much everyone was handled. So yeah, incompetent direction all around, I wonder when the studios or directors or I-don't-know-who-at-this-point, realize that no, maybe you can't do better, maybe actually listen to the author.

I genuinely love all the change in settings and actions you're doing throughout the video. It gives it a real cinematic feeling!

Considering the amount of time it took you to finally get around to this, I’d love a yearly episode of you comparing a book to its movie counterpart.

I haven’t read the book but I do have addison’s disease. The author did do good in his representation of addison’s disease but I don’t like how it’s kinda just thrown in there. I’m guessing the author heard about addison’s disease and he thought “oh yeah, that would be mad for a book”. Addisons isn’t if you get too excited you will overdose on adrenaline, it’s actually where your body doesn’t make much or any cortisol so you have to take steroids daily to replace what should be there. Stress can kill us, a panic attack could kill us, literally being jump scared could kill us. It’s a shit go, also addison’s disease is extremely rare BUT JFK actually had addison’s disease. Anyway that was a whole rant to say that I don’t super love the way jay’s addison’s was kinda just shoehorned in there 😕
