At 16, McDonald's was my first job, too. Fast-forward, I'm 38 now and in the healthcare field with aspirations of becoming a doctor. Like you, I'm a bit conflicted but unsure if I really want to pursue this goal I've set for myself. My whole mindset now is about seeking a better quality of life and I've been feeling this way for some time now. Wow, I came across Timothy Ward's page a few months ago. He's very insightful and listening to him further solidified how I've been feeling and it just hits home. Living to work and doing for self and my peace of mind. Thank you for this and your content.

My colleague left his 14 year career and got zero appreciation for the effort and time he put in doing his job with the best of his abilities. No one bothered to email him months after he left except for me, even the officemates he bonded with for a few years. It just goes to prove that work is just work to help us pay the bills, nothing more. Not a social setting, not something that defines us. If it takes toll on mental and physical health, then it's time to go, no ifs, no buts.

All the best in the next chapter of your life! I think I'm a few years older than you, but I admire so much that our generation knows when to take a breather for ourselves, and are finding more meaningful ways to live our lives than just working a prestigious job and being recognized for it. A job is a means to our livelihood, but it's not always what makes us feel alive. Who we are outside of work, our passions, interests, and what brings us joy should be just as important. Good for you, Celine! Take care 💕

Celine, thank you for sharing and your experience resonates with me. My parents came to Canada for a better life when they fled Vietnam. I was taught to express gratitude for the little things such as being able to have nutritious food readily available, a roof over my head, and an opportunity to make a living. I brainwashed myself because of these fundamentals. "There are other people out there who are going through worse" is what I would tell myself so I continued to work to move up the corporate ladder. I left corporate in June due to burnout (e.g. waking up in the middle night, cold sweats, brain fog, etc.) There is more to life than work, and money although money does make it easier. I believe a degree of pain or suffering allows us to appreciate what we have and be decisive when faced with adversity.

I can relate so much to this video since I too have worked since I was 16 and I’m 23 now and recently quit my job to focus on my mental and physical wellbeing. I started a RU-vid channel to document my journey both the good parts of it and the bad parts of it. I wouldn’t change a thing about my decision because these companies don’t really care about us and if we wear ourselves out working for them then they will just replace us once we’re gone but life is too short to allow a job to beat us down. If you don’t look out for yourself in this world then no one else will so you have to make decisions that are the best for you

Wonderful update. I feel fortunate coming upon your channel not that long ago, and watching you pretty much waking up. I'm loving your observations, looking forward to your "postcards" from this new life you're traveling in. No, it's not that I'm further down "the road" than you but I had this same realization many decades ago, that "living to work" was pretty intoxicating stuff and hard to shake off. Our society's designed around it -- You won't win the rewards if you don't play their game. For me, the key was staying awake and learning more about what was deeply important to me. I'm sending you long, strong hugs and smiles -- you're doing the right thing, no matter how hard it gets.

I really resonated with this video and your story. I attached my worth to my corporate job so much because that’s what we’ve been taught all our lives in school. It’s also hard when everyone around me keeps pushing that message. Low & behold I got laid off from that job - my first job out of college. It definitely sucks, but if there’s anything I’ve learned it’s that these companies will not be loyal to you even when you’re loyal to them. Love this video, and keep going 🫶

this is such an interesting video to watch… as a 16 year old high school student, it’s good to know what my future could look like because I see my career path going in the direction of business, similar to yours. I also love the part where you talked about “work to live vs live to work” because I thought I worked to live, but reflecting on my summer I definitely lived to work. I’m not going to talk much about it because that job really was a horrible experience, my coworkers were jerks and I was always the one doing my job, my coworkers’ jobs, and tasks for people I don’t even work with. some of my days were consumed with negativity and bathroom cries and at my age, I really don’t see why that is necessary. I also love how open you are about your situation because for someone my age, this is so enlightening. I’m still at the stage in my life where I really don’t know exactly who I am, what I want to do, where I want to live, etc. part of me watching this is a little concerned because life really has changed since Covid, and for many like me, it completely flipped upside down; but the other part of me is intrigued because both of my parents were in the same situation as you. I wish I could understand what you are talking about in terms of your work experiences because I will admit, I am ignorant and I’m scared for what people will do to me when I grow up. I remember during covid, my mom especially would work all hours of the night remotely all for her to get laid off in the end. I can’t wait to see what you do next Celine (I think I might have an idea as to what you’ll do), and I’m excited for this new chapter for you, I know that everything will work out for you🫶🏼

Congrats on prioritizing yourself. I did the same back in July after 20+ years in the corporate world (and more if I count working during my college and university years - fun fact I also worked at McDs when I was 16). It was a very scary decision to make, to leave a job without anything else in front of me, but I feel so light now. I didn't realized how close I was to burning out. Now, I have time for my family, to be really there and, looking forward I want to make sure I don't lose that.

Love how you shared on this topic. I have so much to say about it on different levels!! First, I went through the same realization couple years ago: success is different for every person. And being in a big company, with a big job and lot of responsabilities is not for everybody. We are so influenced by what we are told growing up/in school and I truly think our 20's help us figuring out where we stand. I thought having a big job was the dream, I worked very hard in my 20's than realized I could have something different that the traditional path and it will be totally fine if I was happy. Few things helped me: being layoff twice in Toronto, being in a relationship because I realized if I was not only working I could have fun with my favourite person, my social platforms, having my blog, Instagram, RU-vid, made me realized how much I love doing it and that I love the feeling about doing something on my own. Second thing, and I kind of want to make a video about it now: the different work culture between France and Canada (if you are reading this comment and you are not Celine, I'm French, living in Toronto since 2014). I have come to realize that North American culture really make you believe that your worth as a person is only linked to your job. If you ask a Canadian whats up, they are gonna mention work in the first few words, when French people will probably talk about their weekend or sports. I talked a lot about this topic around me and a lot of my Canadian friends realize in their 30's that they dont know who they are outside of work, that work defines them and they will most likely introduce themselves saying they are XX working at XX. You are ahead of time making this move at 26! About values, I think when we are fresh from school we want a job to start building our career, we dont have the luxury to find a company with values aligned to ours, but as we get more experience and also more comfortable with ourselves, we look for something better aligned with us. That was long and I have so much more to say! I'm happy you did that for yourself! and even happier bc its just the beginning of a new adventure for you!
@luhvskat

this is so interesting to read because I am Canadian living in the us, and I think in general everyone here is focused on success. I recently went to Italy and it was so interesting to see how life is just so much more different, I can imagine it’s similar to France. It’s so interesting especially seeing people like Celine, you, and others in the comments talking about this because I am almost at the point in my life where everything will change (going off the college, graduating, getting a job, etc) and I know that this will all come very quick. I loved your insight on this because I’m guilty of this too, my days are consumed with thinking about what college I’ll get into, what job I’ll have, how much money I’ll make, etc. and I value your experiences, thanks for sharing, its very helpful for people like me 🥹🩷

I had enjoyed hearing you talk and it made me learned why I still haven’t progressed in my career. I’m surprised to hear that you’re very first job was working at McDonald’s because you don’t look like a type of person who would want to work there, no offense. I also think you’re blessed to have a starting job working at McDonald’s in HS because I always wanted to work but never found my way to the working work at a young age like you. You’re also lucky to be in a program in HS where you can get a job/internship because if programs like those existed in my HS I would sure join instead of struggling with finding work myself. Lastly, it was interesting to hear your reflection on the burnout and I’m really shocked how you saw through it instead of continuing to see things as it. I’m looking forward to your solutions on quitting a job without a job lined up since I’m struggling this myself right now.

Life is too short to not be happy or be stress and burned out all the time. If you're lucky enough to have a job that you love and doesn't stress you, great! But if that's not the case, a job is just a job, it's just the way we get the money to do what we love and enjoy, so we shouldn't put so much of our sefs and our energy into it (it's my opinion). And definitely, we should not be so loyal to a company because they don't care about their employees, and if they have to fire you, they will (as you saw it in your job). So good for you, girl! I hope this new chapter brings you a lot of joy!

Haha, people in the comments talk about working for years and years and quitting their jobs for their mental health and wellbeing and how brave that is... And here I am at age 28 with no job and no money, only imagining having a stable income to be able to do anything... People are just so privileged to have a job for a long time in the first place.

I worked at a marketing agency for years as well, also through covid. I never thought it was a dream job but i was really good at it. The problem is that in agencies, you are gated to one aspect of your client's business. So it gets very repetitive and not challenging. I ended up going in-house and after several years and promotions, i am much happier. Based on whatever you want to do (as a person, not an employee) give yourself the space to just be.

I'm 40 and I'd love to stay working for one company for 5, 10, 15 years but work can get to you. The environment, workload, lazy colleagues, double standards can affect your happiness at work and make you question whether you should stay or go. I was unhappy in my job before the pandemic and experienced burnout during the pandemic and left my job of 4 years in mid 2021. I consider myself an intensely loyal person and employee, but my happiness and mental health are #1 to me.

by "doing what we are suppose to do" as suggested by others. I went to k-12, college, got degree, and got my degree job in Construction Management. Only later to ditch it all because it was not what i wanted after following so called wisdom from others. Now I do what I want, but i can only do it when I started to do everything myself and listen to myself, I self taught myself in investing, photography, dancing, writing, and now I do it all. No thanks to schools which i think is a total waste of my time and education.

Your discovery that businesses, none of them, are loyal in return for employee loyalty was the key. Whilst I, like you, want to be loyal and feel it is the way to be (it is integrity as far as I am concerned), companies do not give a stuff about us. They will do what suits them. Therefore we should all do what suits us. It is sad, however every company is literally cold and soulless. We owe our employer nothing.

Hello, I’ve been working for an auditing firm for almost 5 years now. I came to the point that if I don’t stay late working or I don’t work on weekends, I feel so down as if I am letting down the Compnay or something like that, I feel as if I am not doing something that is my responsibility. I realized that actually they brainwashed me to think that work is the only thing I can do and if I didn’t work long hours or weekends, I am not doing a good job. Idk if this makes any sense to anybody, but that’s how I feel.

Celine, you have just described my life perfectly but with a couple differences. 1. I was a systems engineer 2. I’m a bit older than you so the story ends with me taking an early retirement. There is no honour in slaving away for the man to earn a salary that barely allows one to just get by. As you get older, the job becomes enslaving, as family and mortgage commitments take precedence-irrespective of whether it’s a “dream” job or not. Companies validate you with praise and promotions to keep you-no other reason. They are legal entities that do not care about you. Consider yourself a free agent, and if you can somehow get to the US, you’ll double your standard of living and likely your happiness. You are on the way to figuring out life, not just your career. Best wishes 💜

Hey Celine forgive me if I've said this already but as a producer and audio nerd it intrigues me how you hold that mic 😂. Is that microphone wireless? Anyway I think this video has an original approach to a topic about 9 to 5 jobs that's been discussed a lot since the pandemic. They call it The Great Resignation. I get it. I admire the millennials and Gen Z being so bold and courageous to want something different for their lives. Change. It's interesting that a person said this generation always wants change. Uh...what's the alternative? Change is constant. With change you can get dressed to go outside and meet it or be comfortable in your home and let it break in your house. It will knock first. I've been working for someone all of my life because going to college or getting a job was the only option for many generations. Times have changed and I'm excited to break these chains. If you see full articles from me in your comments I apologize I'm also a writer. I appreciate you for always taking your time to reply back with thoughtful engagement that's real conversation. Many channels it feels like a robot is typing the basic reply back. It's nice to hear back from a human that types more than 3 words. Thank you. Another great video! P.o.p.

It's insane that the coworker said, "Oh, this generation always wants a change". Uh, yeah, because we are seeing that the system isn't working for us. We provide the hard work and grit to do everything for a company, and then the company doesn't reward us for building it up, it fires us. The system is flawed.

Most companies preach work/life balance but obviously they're being hypocrites. I have found after working for 20 years it's really up to you to create that work/life balance and stand by your principles. If your employer stands by it then great, if not then it's not the place for you. But that takes a lot of life experience to get there. Looks like you have realized this a lot sooner than I did.
