So... I just left my job as an Associate Solutions Architect at AWS.
This has been one of the toughest career decisions to make, but I decided to quit AWS to focus on the Tech With Lucy business and become a "full-time RU-vidr".
In this video, I explain the reasons why I chose to pursue RU-vid full-time, instead of just doing it as a side hobby.

Good for you Lucy! I've been an SA at AWS for 5 years, and am in my late 30s. So perhaps have a little perspective. I travelled widely and had many adventures in my 20s, but my only regret is that I didn't quit my job more often. The consequences of failure in your early 20s is so low, the risks are almost all upside. As you get older, your options tend to narrow, and perhaps the stability of working in large a enterprise like AWS makes sense, but you have so many years for this. So, enjoy the freedom! Do everything, do nothing, fail, succeed, repeat or don't. The gift you have at 23 is endless possibility, how lucky you are to realise this so early. This cannot be overstated. I was actually rejected from SA at AWS twice, and in interviewing at my current role I was told multiple times that there was a concern I wasn't experienced enough in the projects they were specifically doing. Come to find out I'm more experienced or as experienced as the rest. I also have a RU-vid channel on the back burner that I think would be able more accurately display my abilities as whatever I'm doing now clearly is underselling myself. And i am typically quite comfortable moving to greener pastures, and have done it many times. Getting started down that path early really is a fantastic decision as even if you crash and burn, it basically means nothing, you've lost nothing, and gained skills most people are honestly lacking.

He is right about the older you get, the harder it is to recover from a financial or business failure. I’m in my 40’s and I am starting a business, but I’m very hesitant to leave my job upon success of my business ideas due to health insurance, retirement guarantees, and so forth. If my business fails it would be difficult to find work paying as much for me. If my business has great success, the problem still is how long will that success last? I’m trying to balance the 2 but admittedly the job takes priority. My solution is upon success I will hire people to do much of the work I was doing so basically I’m the president and owner but I’ll hire a CEO, CMO, and a chief editor. But that takes lots of money. At least I have 10 more years to retire and they job has flexibility. But that’s a long time trying to work AND run a business that is successful and may need me to travel, meet clients, work on projects for businesses and business professionals, and possibly even high net work individuals. Gonna be a tough call for me, but for you taking the chance now is great and you have plenty of time to recover from failure (that is if you fail). Take chances, see where it leads. Might even lead you to a way better life than you even dreamed of. Good luck! I’ll be watching lol

Awwwww! I just stumbled on your videos recently and i also work at Amazon in the CS orgs as an L5 sde2 and I am doing the AWS certifications for solution architect as well and i was hoping that one day I'd grow enough to walk into a meeting and suddenly realize I'm in the presence of the infamous Lucy 🤣. Congrats on your priorities decision, i couldn't be able to make that big jump. The good news is that you will always have a safety blanked with your experience, but it's good to work on doing on your identity and brand ans even just your own fun time. Like you said, it's a two way door, but what you're doing here is also more of a flywheel. Your experience in AWS is fueling your channel and your experience tutoring and presenting on RU-vid feeds back into your AWS job experience if you chose to go backx Spin and Spin and off you go! Hi Lucy! I had recently discovered your channel because I had applied to AWS for a work based program and I have my interview on Tuesday, so I was looking for information on RU-vid so that how I found you. I have found your videos to be very informative and I got motivated with your story on how you got into becoming a Solution Architect. So when I got notified of this video and the said you had quit your job at AWS I was shocked, like why would someone leave such a great and high paying job, so a few hours later I watched it to see why you left, so that was my initial reaction but after you explained why you did it, I think I would say it’s fine, because you have worked for two years and you have developed your skills and learned so much. Now, if your growing that quickly on RU-vid and you can compensate your salary that’s ok I would say go for it. You’re still young and if that’s what you want to do go ahead do it now. Take the risk now, and if it doesn’t work you can always find a job, but I don’t think you will need to. You can help people by continuing to educate and inform about how to become a solution architect, and so much more. I wish you only the best😊 and thank you for your videos!

I just left my job at AWS as well. It was bittersweet, I really think it is an awesome company to work for! I also learned a lot from the Leadership Principles and things like one-/two-way door decisions etc. But I understand that it is also very demanding and can be difficult to do things on the side. All the best to your journey and hoping mine can be as fruitful too! I agree we are fortunate in the idea that we can always go back into a job again.

I agree about the two-way door, there's always a way for you to get back into AWS as long as Amazon is around and worst case if it's not? You can take and translate those skills and knowledge to other Cloud platforms. I've been thinking about starting to make videos on my YT channel but can never land on an idea that doesn't already have a bunch of people approaching the subjects. Best of luck!
