I have went without eating sugars for 4 1/2 years. I was diagnosed with cancer. So I was told that cancer feeds off of sugar, so I stopped eating it while doing my chemo. Then I just keep it up. I just eat fruits if I want something sweet. Now I will enjoy a piece of cake or something else every once in awhile. Happy for you Hillary. It will become easier for you. Thanks for sharing. Was diagnosed with cancer in December, and just finished a 40 day sugar fast so I get it!! Easier to say no, but special treats!!

Years ago I read: if you crave a sweet it means your body wants a protein. Keep boiled eggs, sauteed tofu strips, meat chunks, cheese in portions on your fridge shelf. Unsalted nuts measured out, too. Observe how the addiction slides away.

Thanks for the tip -- I will definitely try this! The tip for coffee with a tbsp of heavy cream, vanilla extract and cinnamon sounds great!

I needed to comment...you just gave me the idea to put vanilla, cinnamon and heavy cream in your morning coffee instead of using sugar. I'm a diabetic and think this is a fabulous idea! Thanks!

I’ve been sugar free for a year now. Eating whole foods mostly protein, fruits & veggies and healthy fats. It is doable. Enjoyed your video Hilary!

It's amazing how when you cut down on sugar, things you used to like start to taste too sweet. I love a good dessert but often find the sugar in recipes is so exaggerated, and generally use half or even less with great results. It's all about what you are used to, and that can change over time when you implement small changes.

you can also sub oil with banana or (natural)applesauce and this will let you cut the sugar even more :)

I was in a 12 Step Program for disordered eating. (Binge eating, compulsive eating and history of bulimia). There is a phrase- HALT, asking yourself- “H” am I hungry (true hunger, like you are past meal time) “A”- angry. “L” lonely. “T” tired. In other words- things that trigger the desire to “use” food. I was sugar free for 8 years. That included syrup, honey and artificial sugar (which kept me addicted to sweet). I didn’t eat anything with sugar listed within the first 5 ingredients. Things like ketchup were not an issue because I wasn’t eating a cup of it. I used a little on a burger wasn’t an issue. I am definitely addicted to sugar!! I watched an interview with Eric Clapton and they asked him when his drug addiction began and he said - as a child, with sugar. I thought that was profound!! Sadly, I started eating sugar again during a very difficult time in my life- my mom had recently passed, I was assisting my elderly dad and I got diagnosed with breast cancer. During my mastectomy and lymph node removal, they discovered I also have Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (cancer of immune system). I began abusing sugar again and still do. I have been journaling lately that I need address my sugar addiction again. The pandemic has been very difficult for me. I’m still very restricted due to the lymphoma. But, sugar certainly isn’t really helping but maybe for a brief moment. I’m grateful you posted this. Another nudge from God for me.

I was diagnosed type 2 diabetic….attended a clinic for diabetics and learned about carbohydrates ….adhered to a strict diet that limited carbs to 20 grams a day….lost weight and turned around the diagnosis! Fruit is high in carbs. I hadn’t heard of keto, but when I did hear…I knew that was for me. Now I also do intermittent fasting. Stevia is an excellent natural sugar supplement. I buy the organic stevia. I look at carbs are like money…I have 20 to spend and decide where that will go. And I do splurge, but not often. We eat at home and whole food mostly.

I get this, I too go to sugar when stressed or tired. I think I will do this, I gained some weight over the pandemic and the loss of my husband, but I’m ready to be healthier, both physically and emotionally. Thanks for this encouragement, it helps💜

I've had migraines since I was 7, im 49 now, have seen handfuls of doctors, so many tests,....you name it. I had several a month, debilitating. I was referred by a friend to a Natural Health Clinic. They tested my blood against 250 foods. Its costly and most insurance does not cover, but wow, life changing and worth every penny!!! The things I was eating every day I was allergic to...all dairy (eggs, cheese, milk, butter and then everything they are in. Cows, sheep and goat). Oranges, honey, raspberry, beans, garlic, grapes, coconut, and peanuts. A few more that I don't eat came up too. I've taken them all out of my diet since August and wow!!!!! I would have never guessed those were the culprits! I still have an occasional migrane, but like you dehydration, smells can give me one. Hopefully this helps someone!

I had migraines for years they put me in the hospital. Tried all the meds-tried all the tricks, gave up meat and haven’t had a migraine in 6 years. I used to be leveled with a migraine 3-4 times a month. Keeping a food/sleep journal can help a lot

I’ve been participating in a class through work that is teaching me how to live lean naturally and retrain my brain to no longer crave sweets and other junk food. Part of it is not eating to avoid discomfort such as stress, tiredness, etc. I’ve eliminated snacking between meals and am eating more fresh fruits and veggies. It is really helping me to stop eating for emotional reasons. Thank you for the coffee idea, I’m going to try it!

I did this and felt so great! I’ve fallen off the wagon and can most definitely feel it. I’m more sluggish and have those little aches and pains I assume is from inflammation. Trying to start over this week.

Hi Hilary……this video and your “no sugar” challenge really resonates with me, I have been overweight most of my adult life and I really think I have a sugar addiction! You have really inspired me to try this challenge….I have done the Arbonne 30 day detox several times and was able to give up sugar so I know I can do it but it’s really scary how strong of a hold sugar has on us…😬

The cinnamon in your coffee is great for blood sugar too. I stopped sugar in my coffee about a year ago now and I don’t miss it at all. I put heavy cream, MCT oil, cinnamon, and turmeric in my coffee every morning and I love it.

My husband and I have been trying to cut out having desserts. We would have them after every supper and for a month now we have been having a nice piece of cake only after Sunday supper. We also have had a supply of fresh fruit on hand to help with a healthy thing to snack on when the craving thing hits. We are going to continue with this going into the second month. It’s basically changing a bad habit into a good one.

Great share, Hilary! I used to crave sweets constantly. A side-effect of starting a new-to-me weight loss plan was learning that water and hydration are key. Apparently, when we crave sweets, our bodies want water. It’s hoping we’ll go for fruit to get in more water, but instead, we go for the cake. There is a Harvard study that indicates we need up to 3.5 litres of water each day (I’m Canadian, hence “litres”) just to function. So a lot more than the 8-10 glasses we’ve all been told. And when we want salty foods, we need to up our good fats (avocado, nuts, the omegas). My sweets cravings have disappeared. More water has worked wonders for me.

This is interesting. I’ve always been a big water drinker and have never been big on sweets. Even for fruit, I like tart and not really sweet. I’m usually craving salty but do eat a variety of raw nuts throughout the day.

I had to give up processed sugars 3 years ago, for health reasons. To be honest, I haven’t really missed it. Once in a while a new product will come on the market that looks like it would be sooo good, or perhaps a piece of pecan pie during the holidays, but it’s only an instant temptation and then it’s gone and I don’t feel like I’ve missed anything.

I really enjoyed hearing about your experience! I gave up refined sugar and refined carbs 3 years ago when my doctor said my blood sugar was in the prediabetes range. I took it as a wake-up call to change my diet and add more exercise to my daily routine. I’d tried low-carb diets before. I always felt better but I replaced refined sugar with artificial sugars. The sweet craving was always there and when I was faced with a piece of cake or candy and my willpower was down I’d fall off the wagon hard-core. This time, though, I had a healthy suspicion of artificial sweeteners and went cold turkey. And it has worked. I’ve had a small piece of fruitcake and a sample size praline in the 3 years. I bake for my family all the time and am not tempted because I’m choosing health over sugar. Anytime my blood sugar starts to creep up, I realize that I’m not being careful with getting enough complex carbs or I’m not drinking enough water. Good luck with your sugar-free journey! It’s worth it physically and emotionally! I used to have migraines, too. I realized that they were being triggered by cottage cheese and yogurt. I can have small amounts if I’m using them in a recipe but can’t eat them regularly.

I have done this before. I did a whole 30 years ago which was no sugar and no grains too and I felt like it changed my life. I think the most amazing thing about it is how much energy you get from avoiding refined sugar. Over the years though sugar has definitely crept back into my life to the point that right now me and my husband keep saying we need to do this again. You are definitely giving me inspiration to reset again. It’s been hard though. We have a 5 month old and I’m definitely like you, I crave sugar when I’m stressed. It’s totally an emotional thing. But there really is no ideal time to start something like this so we just need to jump in and do it. Thanks for sharing.

I have done this also, and I felt so much better when I eliminated sugar from my diet. I have fallen off the wagon but I am going to start tomorrow morning! (Already had sugar today! )My son left for sea for 28 days so I can count the no sugar days along with the days until he gets back from sea! A good way to keep my mind busy from worry while he is away!

I have had no sugar for a year now. The only sweetener I use is honey. I have also been off all grains, starches, soy, corn, processed foods, caffeine, and most dairy. No chemicals of any kind. It has been life changing. It broke all of my food addictions. Natural sugars in fruit and honey are processed differently in the body than refined sugars. Monosaccharides vs polysaccharides.

@@jendebesse4110 Very basic. Lots of fresh fruit. Fresh salads. Raw vegetables. Cooked vegetables. Nuts. Nut butters. Nut flours. Eggs. Homemade soups. Some meat, fish, poultry. A very small piece of 70% or more dark chocolate each day. 😎

@@eversosophi9653 Yes I do. 0 - 3 servings of meat based protein per day. 80% or more of what I eat is plant based. Hard boiled eggs. Steamed seafood. Homemade chicken soup. Air fried chicken wings. Those are what I have most often.

This! So glad you are feeling good!! I gave up sugar a year ago, ( I actually went strictly carnivore) and lost 52 lbs and got rid of all of my aches and pains. I sleep better too! Hot flashes...gone! I also got rid of the fake seed oils and I couldn't be happier.

Hi Hilary, one of your last videos you spoke of your weight loss, and showed us your thrifting haul, I decided that day to really get back on track, although I am plant based I was starting to take the easy way out on my meals, because of my herniated discs and torn meniscus. I wasn’t fussing….Well I went back to no sugar, and basically just eating veggies, complex carbs, legumes, beans ,whole grains and I lost 4 lbs as of this morning. For me that is a great accomplishment since I have quite a few years on you, and metabolism isn’t what it used to be. I love when you do these type of videos, you are an inspiration ❤️ I love my afternoon coffee, it is also a treat for me, but I never liked any sweetness in it, but my husband one day put a little 100% maple syrup in his coffee, I tasted it just to see and it wasn’t bad, glad you found an alternative I also gave up for Lent eating after dinner, I used to love to snack around 8pm, and always craved salty carbs

Thank you so much for sharing this! I am just starting my zero sugar journey. I am a huge sugar addict and binge eater. When my Nana passed away earlier this year, I gained 20 lbs in about a month. I feel so much better when I don't eat sugar, and that includes sweeteners like honey, stevia, and high sugar fruits. I sleep better, my skin looks awesome, my moods change (I've done this before and want to get back).

I decided to drastically reduce my sugar intake when after I had gestational diabetes with my second pregnancy and then my mother and brother where diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Except for dark chocolate , that I can’t and won’t live without, I don’t have much of a sweet tooth. I started by using a little maple syrup in my coffee and enjoy my teas with nothing in them. Then I switched to monk fruit to sweeten my coffee with. I am also consuming less white rice and regular pasta. But I have found that being too strict all the time does not work for me. So when I indulge, I just keep the portion small. My migraines have decreased in frequency and I feel less sluggish during the day.

Love this. People will argue with you and call you restrictive, just because and/or *until* they have a personal experience like you are describing at about 09:00 min mark. Once u see how much better you feel without certain foods, it's not hard to stick to a diet without it and sincerely enjoy eating a diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods. Happy to have listened to your opinion and experience

I thank you for sharing this. I have been more mindful about the sugar I eat. My husband always reminds me if it does not grow on a tree, it is not that good for you. I use that each day to eat better. I have gone back to eating more plant based in the last two weeks cause I feel better overall and since I suffer from gallstones. I dont get the pain I do when I eat meat or cheese products. I remember using six teaspoons of sugar in my coffee in my 20's. I now do not use any sugar for about ten years and I cant tell the difference. The coffee flavor is so much better without sweetener for me, just like fruits taste better when you give sugar up.

Hillary, I have been hearing the same thing everywhere. I actually get angry about it. I can't imagine my life without sweet things. I'm totally an emotional eater. When I try to avoid sugar I know I'm addicted to it because I have such a hard time concentrating on any thing. I feel driven to it. I'm going to take your suggestion. 1 week. Can I do 1 week? After all my home has benefited by so many things from your channel. I totally agree sugary breakfasts set the day up for no power over the desire to sweets. I drink my coffee black. But start each day with an espresso with 1 lump of sugar. Yikes! That's the first challenge I will have to overcome. I need all the help I can get. Pray for me... it's the only way. 1 day at a time.

Very inspiring, good for you! Coincidentally, I started 30 days of no sugar just this Monday. I've been eating healthier since last August, but have been struggling with sweets again since Christmas. I gave up sugar about 2 weeks ago. It's been surprisingly easy since I'm basically doing one meal a day (OMAD) with a 3 hour eating window. Also, Mid Day Squares for a treat really help, no added sugar.

I applaud, you my friend, for your willingness to do this; no refined sugars for a month and maybe even for the rest of your life! If you have any recipe links you could share or substitutions you have made in your cooking that would be so nice. Will you eventually encourage the family to adopt the no refined sugar eating at some point? I would love to see a week of what Hilary eats, that would be so encouraging to those of us trying to kick the habit . . . or at least limit sugar, lol! 🍏🍓🍆🥑🥦💖

I've found too I feel so much better when I don't start out with sugar. So none in my coffee, no sugary breakfasts. I have a hard crash in the afternoon if I eat sugar too early. Good to hear your thoughts on your experience in this video.

I have tried this and the “nothing white” type of habits on and off as well. I always feel better without it. Having said that, I am “off the rails” 😂 right now. When I want something sweet - I have been using greek yogurt and a tbsp of peanut butter to make a "dip" for a cut up apple. It's so good! :)

The only sugar I consume is basically from fruits, now eating anything with added or refined sugar feels so crazily sweet and upsets my body. Stabilizing the blood sugar definitely feels great. I prefer oats, rice, potato, honey etc. etc now any day 😊

Hi Hilary you look great! I have done this in the past for my gut health. I was on leaky gut diet, no gluten, no dairy, grains, sugar, and coffee. The first week was very hard but I did it for 90 days and lost 16 pounds and healed my gut. I had a herbalist who helped me along the way and was on expensive supplements. But anyway I started eating regular and within 2 years I gained it all back. Life happens and I got busy but your video has helped me get motivated again. Thank you and God bless you 💓

It’s the hidden sugars which are difficult to avoid, they’re everywhere and the time it takes to read all the ingredients is an obstacle but you do get better at instinctively recognising foods which are sugar rich. Good carbs, fats and protein do take away the cravings because when you truly nourish your body it doesn’t call for a sweet rush. Good luck with your journey. ❤️

🤗 Congratulations Hilary! I appreciate what you said you found about yourself - fatigue and emotions have a big impact on desire for sweet, I am right there with you on that! Two years ago I decided to stop drinking carbonated drinks, I have not had any since. In the past year I have found I am allergic to many foods which were effecting my digestive system, it has been a hard road and health wise things are not always perfect. Finding out that many foods I was eating almost on a daily basis were making me sick - frustrating but knowing I had to change. If we see what a change it makes physically and mentally it is worth the effort. Thank you Hilary for sharing this,

Hilary you have inspired me. I have thought so many times about embarking on a challenge like this but it feels daunting. I think a big piece which you touched on here is the emotional component - when we crave the sugary treat, asking ourselves why and recognizing which situations trigger the cravings. That is huge I think. Could you share any resources that you consulted before embarking on this journey? Also do you have snacks between meals ever or do you find the meals you are eating are satiating enough? Thanks for sharing and for the inspiration. Going to give it a try. P.S. I just watched a few RU-vid videos about people giving up sugar and it was enough motivation to jump in. I don’t snack at all, only my 3 pm coffee and a banana usually or nuts. No it’s not my handwriting, I wish ☺️

I quit sugar on the same day, January 18. I have been eating no sugar and no flour. I am eating one fruit per day in the morning and lots of vegetables and protein. It was rough to start but at this point, day 48, I feel a lot better and have decided to keep going with it.

Stevia is a great substitute as well and you can get different flavors. I have an allergy to cane sugar so I've learned what I can use instead. I also use coconut palm sugar, honey, pure maple syrup and sometimes monk fruit. But I don't use these everyday, only when I bake for myself or have a treat drink which isn't very often.

I hope you read this regarding your migraines~ Many women have hormone induced migraines that follow their cycles. Mine began when my firstborn was about 2 years old. I started taking fish oil and magnesium citrate and it helped tremendously. Now that I’m in peri menopause I don’t really get them anymore, but I still take fish oil. Thanks for the video! Couldn’t agree more about sugar- keeping blood sugars stable and avoiding inflammatory foods are truly transformative!

I’m happy to hear you understand how sugar is in everything. This is why diabetics have such a hard time. Your am coffee sounds great. I’ve had chronic migraine disease since I was 12 years old. Fruit has natural sugar so that needs to be portioned as well. You have done so well I think you have lost so much weight and your doing great with your food choices.

I went keto and then carnivore in 2020 and healed my migraines and endometriosis. I follow Dr Berry also his wife (Niesha) and Dr Cywes here on YT, helped tremendously. I since have recently eased more carbs back in and I'm back to feeling awful. Thank you for encouraging me. The sugar addictions is unreal

Allulose doesn’t spike blood sugar or insulin levels and it makes simple syrup beautifully. It’s a 1-1 ratio so I just follow your simple syrup recipe. It’s great if your interested. I’ve also heard you can do it with erythritol without it crystallizing I just haven’t tried the recipe yet.but erythritol is a sugar alcohol. Just some options for your coffee

Try Primal Kitchen condiments. They are sugar free and delicious. I eat their ketchup, mayo and salad dressings. So many packaged food items have soybean, vegetable oils which are inflammatory and may cause your migraines. I read the labels and try to avoid anything with these oils. I look for olive, coconut, and avocado oils in my food. I also switched to Banza pasta which is made from chickpeas and Raos pasta sauce (no sugar) A great alternative to regular pasta. Kids love it too.

It has been just over a year since I stopped eating sugar and it is life changing - I will never go back! I do have sugar at celebrations - like a piece of birthday cake but that is only a few times a year. It just gets easier and easier to say no. It does take a bit of time for your body to adjust to not having sugar so maybe that contributed to your migraine.

I gave up sugar last November. I do still use liquid creamer in my coffee but that's it. I haven't had a yummy candy bar since last year. If I ate one I would probably be so hyper I would drive myself crazy. Lol. I gave it up because diabetes runs in my family so I'm trying to avoid that if possible. It helped me lose 38 pounds since November and I find I don't miss sugar at all.

@@elanamarshallsea4781 Yes - the extra weight that I had been trying to get rid of just started to fall off - 27 lbs, which was more than I was hoping to lose. I feel so much more energetic, my skin has never looked better, I never feel bloated after eating and I can actually taste things again. I never realized how much of an effect sugar has on your taste buds. Now when I do have a treat - I truly enjoy it and I truly taste it!

I went sugar free for a month... which turned into about 6 years (I'm celiac so I can't have gluten anyway, so I'm missing out on everything anyway and I always bring my own food). After 6 years I found out about gluten free Rice Krispies, so I decided to give that a go. They only contain 1g of sugar per serving, but I was feeling so groggy all the time. I cut them out when I started intermittent fasting last year and I feel 100X better! I could barely drag myself out of bed most mornings (I have multiple auto immune disorders), but the combo of being sugar free and intermittent fasting has been a complete 180 from what I was previously dealing with.

I did the no sugar a few years ago, in the first week and I legitimately had withdrawals, I got headaches and my emotions were up and down so much, but after the first week I felt amazing!! Over a period of a year I added more and more sugar and ended up going back but absolutely something I want to do again. The best part was how much food tasted better once I got used to no sugar.

I gradually cut out sugars and starch in spring of 2021 with the goal of weight loss. I cut way back for both obvious sugars. Starchy veggies turn to sugar so I cut those out too. Sugar hides in so many things. A year later I am continuing to focus on meats and a small amount of non starchy veggies and leafy greens. Major pounds lost, joints feel less achy, and just feel better all around. Off my blood pressure medications and that is huge. No regrets.

Hi Hilary, I'm so glad you're sharing this with your subscribers. Sugar is more harm to our bodies than anyone can imagine, or want to believe. I started following Dr Gundry. You all can google if you'd like. This is NOT a commercial LOL...but if anyone wants to know the truth about foods that we think are "healthy" for us go check out his videos and books. Those "feelings" about sugar are definitely true, but there's so much more behind it. Before Gundry, I had stopped eating nightshades, difficult, yes, but all my joint pains are now gone, so giving up some of the things I loved is so worth not having aches and pains. It's priceless. You will be surprised how much all foods affect your health - you are what you eat! So glad you're going down the healthy road Hilary! It's hard, but so worth it!

I haven't given up sugar but I have been paying attention to added sugars in food. Why is there so much added sugar?!! 😬 I've been focusing on eating as healthy as I can throughout the day - lots of fruits and vegetables with a small treat during the day. I can't stand sugar substitutes. They give me horrible stomach pain!! I make acai bowls for breakfast but buy the unsweetened acai at Target and add nut butter and fruit. So satisfying! I need to try your coffee with heavy cream, vanilla & cinnamon.

Hillary, I've been on this no sugar journey since last Oct and have lost 30 lbs. I have to admit I do eat the Stevia sweetened chocolates when I need something sweet. I like having these banana pancakes for breakfast, can't remember where I found the recipe but it's one whole banana, 2 eggs, splash of vanilla, and cinnamon. You're doing great and I agree with everything you said.

This came just in time. I’m noticing changes in my body due to peri menopause and sugar is a culprit. But I live like you, chocolate for me is more out of boredom, I eat all whole foods and we eat our occasionally. So I will now be doing the 30 days Chaldean see if it helps me. Thank you for sharing!

Have you considered going off coffee? Caffeine is addictive and causes migraines. And is said to cause dehydration. Drink water in between meals. 1 cup an hour. Hope this helps. Thanks for your video it was helpful to me. 😊

Research "histamine bucket". High histamine foods like dates, pineapple, spinach e.t.c. together with little sleep, dehydration, e.t.c can trigger migraines.

A good thing to remember too is sugar has a lot of “aliases “- so beware of ingredients that end in “ose”- sucrose, fructose, etc.

I cut down my intake and noticed how congested and stuffy I got after eating sugary processed foods. Eventually, I cut back because I felt better not eating it. It really helped my mindset to slowly quit instead of cold turkey

I eliminated sugar and white flour from my diet several years ago as well as making a few other dietary changes. The biggest surprise was that after suffering from really severe ulcers in my mouth since I was a young child, I suddenly wasn't getting any ulcers even after starting to eat the acidic fruits that I thought was causing them! I'd be interested to know if anyone knows if the white sugar could have been causing the ulcers. My sweet tooth was pretty intense before I made this change. Thanks for sharing this with us, Hillary.

I had great success doing Keto (not dirty Keto) with Intermittent Fasting. I lost over 30 pounds in five months but the best thing about it was what it did to my body. I lost my cravings for carbs and sugar and I had so much more energy and focus. My periods became regular and I was able to recognize my hormone fluctuations that went with my cycle. I did have a small amount of dark chocolate almost every day. I love chocolate. I also don’t like the taste of artificial sugars so I avoid them most of the time. Keto is very extreme and not very sustainable long term, but I loved how all those cravings just disappeared. I never thought that was possible.

Hilary, the one thing that helps me even over fruits is a chunk of sharp cheddar cheese (maybe 1 oz.) It helps with my sugar levels and also craving something sweet. Sugar-free Jello or chocolate pudding is a good substitute. They leave the least or no after taste for me. Prayers for your life change. 🙏

What you had was a detox migraine. Any time you give up sugar or caffeine or any type of cleansing you will get a head ache, joint aches or some type of ache. That was a good thing. I had migraines too. Turns out my D levels were extremely low.

We don't realize how much we are affected by sugar. And it does affect our moods. Most of us are emotional eaters. It's actually an addiction, which is why I try to keep process sugars out of the house. Eating whole foods help and drinking lots of water. I'd like to try wean myself off of sugar completely, but baby steps. Fruits are a a great substitute for natural sugars, like smoothies.
