For those concerneded about getting more juice out of watch for longer days, GARMIN is the Best. but as mentioned by other reviewers, the Apple watch is designed just by Apple watch users who always wanted more battery life. Garmin and Coros BATTERY Life is 10/10 👍🔥🔥

There are people that will buy the watch for tracking their sports activity and people that will buy it because it looks and feels great. Can you review the battery based on regular use ( listening to music, notifications, emails, 45 minute activity session, etc)

The thing I'M most impressed with is that you ran a spur of the moment, unsupported, mostly solo 50k! 😆 Great job! I'm not impressed with tech for the sake of tech, especially when it doesn't function 100%. I'd rather have less flash and options, that work well. I'll stick with sport watches for now, though the apple sure is pretty. Hope to see more videos of you doing painful things with great cheer!

@@runningchannel I do, I'm still on my first smart/sport watch, the Garmin Instinct. Being a farmer I needed the tough ruggedness. The battery life is awesome, it lasts for days after my (very slow) 50ks. The navigation is the simple breadcrumb style, but I haven't really needed it yet. Great GPS, not so great altimeter, which is a bummer in the mountains. BUT it is 3 years old and has taken a beating, so I'm hoping to move to the Instinct Solar in the spring.
@JamesWester

Great comparison and a fair assessment. I was recently given an Apple Watch, and I genuinely like some of the features, especially when traveling. But for running and training, my low-end Garmin simply can't be beat.

I'm glad the technology is moving towards smart watches and sports watches becoming one. We aren't there yet, but it seems inevitable. If the ultra can barely last a whole activity without dying, there is a long way for that to happen. 8 hours within a GPS activity consuming 72% of a brand-new device is not acceptable for many scenarios, this would have died on me on the long MTB trips I've done when I leave home @4:45am, meet my friends @5am, jump in the van to get into destination, do a one-day MTB long ride, eat lunch, ride back and get back home @6pm, and we are not even talking long ultra events for runners. In comparison, my pretty basic Polar Vantage M2 has done this kind of activities and has enough battery for the rest of the day and probably one more day or two before charging, it's a huge difference if the sports part is your main focus.
@onezweithree
@onezweithree Год назад
@@Asthbendriel to be fair, if you have your phone with you, the Ultra will last way longer, because it then uses the phones GPS.
@Asthbendriel

The ultra does not use phone GPS anymore, so won’t drain phone battery, but will take a hit on the watch. Also more accurate. Also, if using low power mode, messages won’t come in as much, and battery will last longer.

I use to use a series 4 Apple Watch when I first started running. Didn’t like Apples workout app for running so added an app called WorkOutDoors. It was great as it gave you the data that new Ultra watch now does. It also allowed you to have an map on screen and upload routes. Would be a useful addition on the Ultra until Apple adds it to its own app. Downside was it used a bit more battery when you had mapping on. That was the main reason I switched to Garmin instead. Would certainly look at the Apple Watch Ultra in the future but not until it’s gone through a few more versions first.

Great review. I love how you actually showed the practical use cases for this watch. I'm still on the fense between Garmin Fenix 7 and the AW Ultra. I'm not a huge data nerd so I am learning more towards AW. What I want is hear rate monitoring the most. I'm also embedded in the Apple ecosystem. Question - you said there is no navigation? I wanted to use this watch to get turn by turn directions if I am cycling? What about actual mountains, would it sync nicely with an app like All Trails?

Thanks for the review! As some of the people commented already, I cannot imagine getting and replying the emails or messages while on the run, swim or even just a relaxing walk. I've been using Garmin fenix 6s pro since it was released, and I still get 6-7 days of battery with almost daily trainings and tracking set to 1sec, and using GPS+GLONASS. It still holds 9 days if I don't turn on any activity. There's no chance I would settle for a watch that would require constant recharging. Just out of curiosity, how customizable the data screens are on this Apple watch?

Great review. However, I’m sure if you treated it more like a sport watch than a smart watch when using it as such the battery may fair a tad better. It sounds as if you were really utilizing all the additional features (ie. siren, what’s app etc) during the run. I’m also curious to see the difference when the low power mode update releases and what features are paused to basically double the battery life. Nice video. I watched another sports enthusiast named Mark Lewis today who had an interesting take. Apple had the first App Store for a reason. He pointed out it’s not that Apple doesn’t collect copious amounts of data, they do. They just don’t organize it for you. “There’s an app for that” remember. Mark found a fantastic Watch app that organizes his marathon data better than any of his current sports watches. I HIGHLY recommend the Garmin Instinct. I have the original solar model and the battery lasts me a week even with about 5 hours of GPS use. It looks like a sleeker G-shock or a slightly bigger Timex iron man but it still functions great for fitness tracking and will turn off notifications during your activities automatically (unless you want them). The smart watch features are limited but I only ever use it to see if I need to pull out my phone to respond to something important. If you only want to sync to your phone for the activities without using the smartwatch features your battery life will be insane. It only takes a couple of hours to charge anyways. It works really well for hiking too and is super durable. They just came out with the model 2 but I'm happy with my 1st gen. And they're pretty affordable compared to garmin's other watches. I also love that it looks like a normal digital watch, people are always amazed when I show them what it can do. Navigating it is a bit of a pain at first but once you get it set up how you want it and learn the buttons, it's pretty simple

Also, do you need LTE and notices from the watch when running? All features will suck juice from the battery. Interesting video!

Very happy with my very cheap (relatively) Garmin. It would annoy me to have to constantly recharge the watch - which I never remember so it would often be out of battery. Don’t recall Apple saying it was the best sports watch on the market, just that they wanted to provide something too a group of people that the normal AW didn’t work for. Question since I don’t know a ton about the garmin watch does it work for diving too? Also for extra features on the AW that the garmine has isn’t there an app for that? And regarding battery life, one thing that may have some effect is, since this is a review you are playing with the AW features more than normal. Obviously the garmin Ed battery life is better, and I would love the AW to get this good, but I’m sure there are a lot of things it does that the G doesn’t. So for someone that wants to own one watch not 2 or 3 which one would be best?
@runningchannel
@runningchannel Год назад
Hi there, thanks for the message! It was said during their briefing to press. They do work for diving too but we don’t know the full information on that but it is all listed on their website if you want to have a look there. They do have additional apps on the Apple Watch but we were using it to show the average battery life as it would have impacted the battery life. I think it comes down to what you would use the watch for, distances you are running and time spent away from charging capabilities.

Great video! I don't normally comment but wanted to give my .02. I have been a Garmin Fenix user for years and currently have the 6X. They are amazing. I also just got the AW ultra a week or so ago and I really like it as well. A couple thoughts. The battery life on the Fenix is not 36 days when you are using GPS. Admittedly there is no comparing battery life between the two. Just not quite as stark as you noted. I also feel like all of these comparison videos should be using the WorkOutDoors app as it addresses so many shortfalls of the Apple default workout app. Some other annoyances can be addressed by good setup prior to use. For me, the reason I will likely go to full-time use of the AW is that I hate splitting time between devices/ecosystems. Also, the small things add up for me. - Making an emergency phone call for a ride when I almost sh*t myself (theoretically of course) - Opening/closing my garage door - Starting my truck - Streaming music/podcasts if I get bored with my downloaded playlist - No need for my phone at all What I miss: - Body battery - Battery Life Thanks again for the great video!

There is only one thing that the Apple watch does which Garmin still miserably fail on is that it has full LTE capability allowing you to take and make calls. When Garmin finally sort that most critical of features they will have the ultimate watch with far more data than anybody ever needs in a sport watch smashing the smart watch segment. I made an emergency purchase due to a failure of my 735xt during first lockdown of a Fenix 6 sapphire. I shall not change it until it fails or Garmin introduces full LTE on their Fenix or similar ranges.

I was waiting for the Ultra to come out, but I needed a good watch before running my first 25k and I’ve been wondering if I made the right decision going with the Fenix 7s solar. But considering that a 50k is the shortest possible ultra marathon distance and you almost drained it entirely, I’m glad I went Garmin. It’ll be years before I get to, if ever, a 50 mile distance (goals), but I’m glad to know my Fenix will be up to the task. I miss some of my Apple Watch features, I guess. But it would f last long enough to track my sleep even, let alone the 10 days I get. And honesty, I HATE getting alerts on my watch while running. The simplicity of function of a Garmin is really for me. That was a great test. I’d been waiting for an ultra-er to do this.

Instead, I have purchased a Garmin Forerunner 245, I can't wait to test the differences between the two brands, as running watches.
