That's awesome! (in both senses) Watching him on TV, it doesn't look like he's moving that fast - his style is so compact and efficient, he hardly looks like he's moving at all. Then I notice that the background is blurred a bit from the speed he's going past, and yeah...

I could run my mile reps, on Newport athletics track, at just under Eluids 4min 37sec WR pace, but needed a minutes recovery before attempting another, at a similar pace. That was back in 1989, quite a while ago, and i can remember back then, the WR was a fair bit slower than it is now, but its a ridiculously fast pace. To run a further 25miles 385yds at the same pace, showing little signs of fatigue. Its pretty magical.

The thing people always skip over is how fast these times are converted. A 2:18.5 800m is decent. A 4:37 mile is quite fast for anyone. It's a pretty solid high school time and would put you in the top percentile for everyone on Earth. To do a 2-mile at this pace is very very impressive for high school and quite good at the college level too (not winning, but very respectable). A 5k at this pace is ridiculous. Even the best runners would struggle to run a near 14-minute 5k. A 10k at this pace is faster than the woman's world record and fast for professional men too. A half-marathona this pace could win major half-marathons -- yes it's that fast. Now try to imagine doing that half-marathon again!

I'm a big fan of Robert de Castella, a hugely talented distance runner from the 80's. I would love to see how quick he could have gone over a marathon if he was wearing the running shoes of today and with the training methods and racing strategies they have today. As an amateur distance runner at age 52, if I can put on a pair of Alphaflys and go 2 minutes quicker over 14km (and 4 minutes quicker over the HM), then it's a safe bet to assume de Castella would have come close to Kipchoge's time in Berlin.

Most of the population can't actually run at that speed for any distance, never mind for 42km. Break it down in to smaller distances and it comes sharply into focus. It equates to 100m in 17.22s 420 times over, 400m (1 lap of the track) in 69s for 105 laps non stop, 800m in 2:18, 1500m in 4:18, 5k (parkrun) in 14:21 - let that sink in, a 14:21 parkrun more than 8 times over without a break. It's truly astonishing. Even very good runners don't even come remotely close. As an example, my 15 year old son is second fastest (by 0.1s) in Yorkshire county over 800m but he could only hang on to Kipchoge for just over 1500m. Me personally, at 56, I think I'd struggle to keep up for much more than 200m. It's on a completely different level to what non athletes can even comprehend. Kipchoge is truly a living legend 🙂
