11:15 having watched more for the hottest trash I've now reversed my opinions of Cheat Skill and Isekai'd Again. the former is goofy fun, the latter is just tedious

Really enjoyed this. I’m not a big streaming enjoyer but the semi-edited nature of this makes it a solid middle ground that I can get into

I'm glad to hear Insomniacs After School's anime is good because the manga is like... perfect. Absolutely gorgeous art and direction, with wonderfully human feeling characters and story.

As a reader of the manga for magus bride I want to say it's a banger because the manga is incredible. But I also admit I have not watched season 2 yet, so I can't say

Excellent list. I think I must have agreed with 90% of it. The only things that bugged me were Magus Bride being put in Good instead of near the top of Banger and "Danger's in My Heart" is not worthy of being put in Banger alongside the likes of Insomniacs and Skip and Loafer. Those two exemplify what peek slice of life romance looks like and Dangers in My Heart isn't that. I really want to put my "Clueless First Friend in Banger but I have to agree with him on the fact that it just doesn't have the production values to carry it. It's adorable and although the story deserves top marks the lackluster animation and sound direction do hurt it a bit.

Correction about Horseshoe Theory; it's not the idea that opposite ends of the political spectrum are more alike than they are to the middle, that's a common misconception spread by people who don't want to grapple with *actual* Horseshoe Theory. The actual Horseshoe Theory was created as an explanation for the observed phenomenon of radical leftists and conservatives jumping to extremes on the other side without ever passing through the middle, and the theory was that the central idea ferrying these people across was antisemitism. Horseshoe Theory is the theory that the farther you go to the left or right, the more susceptible you become to antisemitism. The central idea is that the more discontent you are, the more likely you are to want an easy to define and destroy enemy, and "The Jews" are really easy to slot in as an antagonistic force no matter what you believe, because you can accuse them of being white capitalist bourgeoisie or oriental communist seditionists and your crackpot theory will have plenty of material to pull from since antisemitism has had such a long history of being used to scapegoat for everyone else's problems. You can see it in practice today with the "terf to nazi" pipeline, as feminists who allow bigotry to color their feminism end up embracing antisemitism as an excuse for why trans people exist, and then that drives them to the far right. As a Jew, it's really frustrating to see people dismiss Horseshoe Theory out of hand, because it only became to mangled and easy to dismiss because people were afraid to say "antisemitism" when talking about it, and because so many people across the political spectrum are convinced that they can't possibly be antisemitic because their political opponents are so visibly antisemitic and it looks very different to what they're often being criticized for. But it's a serious problem, and one that only gets worse, (for everybody, not just Jews,) as people misinterpret it.

So I agree that Bofuri season 1 was better than Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear season 1 especially since they pretty much made it into a grade school friendly version compared to the light novels. But season 2 flipped them both, Bofuri doesn't really have anything new and despite going to new levels couldn't keep my attention, while Kuma actually dove in a bit and at least made it to middle schooler level of action and discussion of topics. I'm a little sad its barely a good visualization of the nicer parts of the light novels but if they get a season 3 I hope they go all in. I'd love to see an epic fight with demons and a corrupted tree of life.

Skip and loafer is easily the best the first i feel like we get ACTUAL high school characters,they feel very real and grounded and the character interactions feel very organic, the only the other shows where characters felt like that is re:zero. Its so refreshing to see this detailed and nuanced at high school like Life, not seasons after seasons peddled due to miscommunication and forced drama

Can someone give a list of the anime please? Its hard to remember which is which just from the pictures, and its anoying to constantly go back and forth in the video because he didnt time stamp it :(

The Dangers in my Heart was the biggest surprise for me this season. I LOVE the show so far and I find myself the most excited for it each week. I just know I'm going to binge the manga at some point

What I love about Skip and Loafer is you see a lot of the tropes of high school, without going overboard and hyperdramatized like most slice of life anime tend to.

As far as the shows I'm watching this season (or tried to watch and dropped), I pretty much agree with Geoff's picks. That said, Heavenly Delusion and Oshi no Ko should be bumped up to "Instant Classic" tier. Also, I personally might upgrade My Clueless First Friend and Otaku Elf a rank each solely for being shows that I didn't expect to enjoy so much. The Takada/Nishimura friendship grows so sweetly and naturally that I think it deserves to be recognized alongside this season's top romcom couples. Elda is 100% deserving of worship, she is top-grade waifu material and I will hear no arguments against her.

Hell’s Paradise is amazing! I love a main character who loves his wife

Heavenly Delusion is the show that's really drawn my interest the most. It's rare we get something so unique that's also so good. It's willing to be subtle and trust it's audience and it's theres so many mysteries to ponder. It's world also feels incredibly realized. I wish I could binge the whole season right now but there aren't any more episodes yet.

As a trash connoisseur I fully agree with this list. Most of my favourites are in Trash, Good Trash, or Bangers, and I’m having such a good time. What a stacked season for us dumpster divers!

Kamikatsu is the perfect example of the horseshoe theory. 'Good trash' and 'banger' have never been closer together. It transcends and overcomes the distinction. It is the golden standard. It is a 'trash banger'.

I can certainly understand not wanting to do this again if it’s too much work, but I really enjoy this content and would love to see it again in the future.

Having followed Kamikatsu every week it's a really interesting case of good trash in that it's very clear that it's intentionally trashy. It feels similar to Renai Flops in that regard, on the rare occasion it shifts into a serious moment it reveals surprisingly good worldbuilding (Episode 5 I believe). The jokes range from cheap laughs to dark humour that would be at home in Uramichi Oniisan. I'm interested to hear what you think when the time comes.

I actually found a lot to like about A Galaxy Next Door beyond the initial premise because of how it deals with balancing independence vs. asking for help when you need it, showcasing a genuine love of shoujo manga with all its tropes and foibles, as well as the thoughtful consideration toward consent with our two leads. Sure, it's not gripping drama, but sometimes it's nice to have a romance about two adults who like each other and are trying their best to navigate their relationship together with care. Keeping up to it week-to-week has felt like sinking into a warm bath and it's something I hope more people give a fair shake. I promise, it's nothing close to a self-insert power fantasy, since the author is a woman, haha!

I desagree on Kamikatsu. It's a banger not good trash. And its clear at the point the bad cgi was intentional (tractor scene for exemple). It's one of the best anime this season and best comedy of this year.

I tried to watch ao no orchestra, but... it's unwatchable in a literal I can't keep my eyes on the screen it looks so bad.

Assuming Phantom Solitaire is nearly as fun in the anime as manga Dead Mount Death will be solidly banging.

For me, Heavenly Delusion is show of the season, followed by Skip and Loafer. Oshi no Ko is fine I guess but it's not really grabbing me the way it's grabbing everyone else (I find its overly cynical take on the entertainment industry a bit cliche and tedious, as is Aqua's constant monologuing about it).

Seriously everyone if you have not given Magical Destroyers a chance yet, please do. If you have ever enjoyed a trigger/gainax anime before then I could not recommend it more, especially if you loved particularly kill la kill or FLCL

I for me cheat skill and 2nd time are swapped. 2nd time starts strong and has and interesting world but has super a boring plot each episode where cheat skill is so overly self indulgant its funny cringe. If i had to pick one to recommend it'd definitely be cheat skill

This season is so stacked I can't keep up with the banger list by itself

The horse shoe theory do not work at all when it comes to politics, it has to do with the fact that there are only two directions on a horse shoe, but politics is a large spectrum that goes in many different directions, there is no opposites in politics. The big example with politics and horse shoe theory is that Hitler and Stalin is shaking hands on the other side of the horse shoe, but that isnt true, they are both fashist technocrats, and socialisms and communisms is near the same thing. However when you have a binary spectrum, the horse shoe works well, there is good anime, and there is bad anime, but a masterpiece is much closer to entertaining to absolute garbage the a middle of the road bland show.

Yuri is my job just drove me away. I know the over-hatred of the protag is supposed to be a mystery that will eventually bring them together, but I couldn't make it to the reveal. It's just not my cup of tea, not enough variety in the settings, not enough likeability for any of the characters, the premise is ultra dumb and the stakes are really low. It's too stressful for slice of life and, once the main protag learns the lesson, the anime has nowhere to go. I put it in trash.

Goddess Cafe Terrace does deserve to be in Good Trash but honestly there's enough heart and care in this series where there's actual plot progression and decent character development that if it were to get a second season and flesh out more of itself I can see it moving into Good.

To me, cheat skill is great trash and to justify this, I'll just say that you have to watch it with the eyes of a producer/director/writer. Just trying to understand why anyone wrote this or decided to use those camera angles etc.... There's a scene of fan service in the girls locker room where inexplicably two girls are playing with stuffed animals in the background. How a human being decided that that scene made sense just is baffling and hilarious. That's one of many scenes with this kind of insanity. It's got a solid "the room" vibe about it. Other than that I agree with most of how you ranked things. Yuri is my job is also like a bunch of autistic people in a room doing Yuri things... It's so stupid but it's also pretty great. Kamikatsu is also just epic levels of bad. The cgi is deliberately terrible and that one scene where that horny dude is tilling the fields and it looks like a RU-vid shit post is just amazing.

See, I got less of a "Gainax at their prime" and more of a "We have Trigger at home" vibe from Magical Destroyers, honestly only kept up with it as long as I did because of the B A N G E R OP and ED and the character designs, but I should probably pick it back up. If for nothing else than to show punk solidarity and hope we get more punk-influenced stuff in the future.

Those are good tiers. Not over the top, but still gets the message across about how good a show is on its own merit.

Spoiler for Birdie Wing: In last week's episode, the show completely dunked on the idea of underground golf, Eve declaring it to be boring and worthless compared to the "real" golf she had with Aoi. Incredible to see a show dumpster the premise that got so many people interested in it in the first place, but if one show has the balls to do it, it would be BW.

Man, Demon Slayer is so overrated. Cheat Skill is good fun Trash, Heavenly Delusion is AMAZING. And Bocchi should take every award, even ones like the Tony and Best in Show....

I'm really happy I listened to you on Oshi No Ko, hearing the initial premise seemed like it would go to gross places and turned me off to it but seeing the art style and knowing it had the same author as kaguya-sama made me give it a try and I'm so happy I did because HOLY SHIT. It might be recency bias but it may go down as one of my all time favs. Also really loving Heavenly Delusions. It seems to be scratching the itch of disappointment I got from from Promised Neverland season 2, even though they're very different series they do seem to share some ideas.

They do call attention to the trans aunt in Skip and Loafer -- we hear some ladies on the subway talking behind her back at some point like 'is that a man?' And the aunt also tells her niece to mention that she is trans to her friends when she invites them over for the evening, so they won't be surprised. Was a weird moment, I thought, but it was played as if it was a normal thing to say in the show.

How can you knock "My Clueless First Friend" for its animation, when "Yamada-Kun" takes just as many, if not more shortcuts with its animation? And Takada-Kun is way more of a giga Chad than Yamada. He was already holding her hand in Episode 1!

Geoff hey can you do a throwback review for Blue Seed. It's a old one but it's one of my first favorite shows when I started watching anime! Anyways keep up the great work!

The anime being put on Hulu is pissing me off. Everyone is saying that its on Disney+ and I have Disney+, but then it turns out its on the worst streaming service of all time, Hulu, which I don’t have. C’mon Disney stop putting it on the worst streaming service and put it on Disney+.

Geoff, if you'll allow me a moment, Rokudou's Bad Girls is a sandwich of an anime. By that I mean the start is a bland plain bun, with a few sesame seeds of good ideas sprinkled on top. The center is full of juicy, delicious Good Food, with tons of great fights, good character moments, and Rokudou actually being a seriously great dude rather than a garbage harem protag. The ending is a toasted-to-the-point-of-burnt bun with a big air bubble in it representing the lack of any sort of story resolution for one of the main characters. It's a series bookended by mediocreness with fantastic arcs in the middle. I know you're more an anime guy but the manga is done and can be blitzed through really fast. More specifically, Rokudou is NOT a harem series. All the Bad Girls fall for him, but he only has eyes for one girl the entire series, Ranna. And he also has one of my favorite protagonist improvement arcs I can think of in a long time. Just straight up is like "wait, I suck and am weak, I should do something about that", and asks for help to properly get better and able to defend himself and others. and it actually matters! it's great! but then the series ends on a wet fart of an epilogue that feels like they were trying to wrap it up for one final volume rather than actually having a closing arc for the series.

When the adroll runs just after the Yazy asplosion... maximum cliffhanger

Didn't get sad that Kamikatsu is at Good Trash tier because I fully agree and I still love it. The CGI is deliberate!!!!

I respect your choices but the plot summary of Op.Colors you gave was just inaccurate Its about a hot boy whose an artist and his childhood friend who used to be an artist is instead the in-universe term "Grader" which is like the producer/director for collaborated art pieces Theres a huge social divide in the school between artists and graders therefore its about the boys learning to get along and properly collaborate as they discuss their individual feelings on art The show is still mid and definitely not executed as well as the team's former show, Starmyu, but as a Joseimuke fan I think it deserves to be properly explained It also went from being a compeition show to a mystery show like 4 eps in. Its wild. I personally love it and consider it good trash that fills my itch for a decently animated bishounen-filled show, but it definitely flops in the execution of its concept.

This video scared me when I saw that edit shot of Otaku Elf in the trash setup even though he was talking about that NFT anime. Otaku Elf in banger is where it belongs. One of my favs this season.

I actually really enjoy Run For Money: Great Mission. Sure, a LOT of that is because I'm a massive fan of the game show and now I'm getting to see the science fiction backstory that's always been basically flavor text to Japanese celebrities (to a given definition of course) making idiots of themselves on TV take center stage and be explored. is it high quality animated art? Hell no. Is it fun as a PG hunger games? Yeah.

Please do more C tier content like this, I enjoyed it.

Marginal Service also has this weird thing where it keeps bringing up immigrants and drawing comparison between them and the cryptids (in part through the titular Marginal Service being part of the Immigration Bureau) while providing absolutely no nuance to that metaphor besides showing most of the ones seen in the show doing crimes. Which is... certainly a look.
