11:00 “he goes through so much more than most in these games and he matures way too fast”. This hits diff when you remember Ken and Akechi are canonically the same age. Except Ken at least had SEES and Koromaru to help him out, Akechi had no one.
@@fufu_kunnn they probably meant if they were in the same time. like they were born in the same year or something. persona 5 took place in 2016 right? if ken was like 9 or 10 in 2009 then hed be 16 or 17 in persona 5, which is similar to akechi (i dont actually know how old ken is lol)
Shoutouts to the editor for making me laugh every 5 seconds Edit (May 17, 2024): More than a year later, I've been brought back to this video. I still have a good laugh every 5 seconds 😂
I like Makoto (P3 protag) more because of his MOvie counterpart. I believe P3 did a bad job showing him off as a protagonist but the movie shows him more as a reserved kind of person who is fast thinking and lives in a limbo of liking people and not caring for anyone and that's incredible XD
Movie Makoto can express himself more, so you can see his development more clearly, while in the games it's more implied, and the player being able to control his speech all the way masks it better (since you can basically choose how much he cares, or how nice or asshole-ish he is at any point of the story). In general, Makoto feels like the only protag from the modern games that actually has character development. Early game/movie Makoto is nothing like late game/movie Makoto, while late game Yu/Ren are just early game Yu/Ren + friends.
I expected she would make a tier above it just for him, Now I learned she doesn’t like Adachi and that makes me super confused to the point I think she’s a little an hypocrite (like many Akechi fans who believe he’s not the same kind of character) : same concepts, similar execution, same unreasonable path in life, same righteous mask, same will to see the world burn. The only relevant difference I see is that Akechi came back to work as hard as he could to destroy the reality without freedom because he hates it (certainly not out of generosity that’s for sure) Mostly on their core (we have to take the original Akechi from vanilla to see that obviously) they are just as good and compelling, Akechi has just a more defined backstory which isn’t that important and happens completely off screen, we just know some more details about it. I think the genuine reasons he’s more beloved are all unreasonable for traits a character should not need to be compelling and have no worth per se: -because he’s young and a superstar at the beginning (in appearance) -he’s not punished by the game and the blame is mostly shifted on Shido (characters saying they’re uncomfortable around him isn’t the same as condemning him, don’t treat me like an idiot!) -his tragic end is more sad than Adachi’s and somehow people argue he was not the one who decided his own path and that’s hilariously absurd -the most bullshit reason there could be: the head canons and fanmade stuff taken as a replacement for some of his motivations and drives depicting him as just someone who needs an hug from his partner and/or best friend (which let me remind you he unnecessarily “killed” in cold blood following his own plan).
@@edwardsuou yh no sorry i really cant see how you can say theyre the same? I mean you mentioned the age thing and honestly even if everything else about them were the same that would be enough to recontextualise their characters. Aketchi is supposed to be a foil to joker theyre essentially the same character down different paths where aketchi had no friends to help him and steer his revenge into motivation to change society instead of pure vengance. Adatchi is also a foil to yu and thats honestly part of the reason i dont like him as much because i find yu to be similarly bland. Theyre both from the big city moving to the boonies but yu could find the good in it and form genuine connections whereas adatchi is an an old man bored and disapointed by the harsh realities of life. One starts killing out of literal boredom while the other spent his entire life building his standing in a meticulous way to get revenge on a single man. I acctually found them both to be preaty shit villians but then royal came along and it made aketchi something more than a villian and explored what happens to him after his motivation was semi completed. They did that with adatchi too in arena tbf but there was obviously less of it and it was in a spin off. People usually like aketchi more because of his character, motivation, and execution not because of vein reasons thats clear enough to anyone whos been around since before royal when aketchi literaly had the same reception as adatchi
@@thisisanamedontjudge329 yeah they're indeed not the same. adachi is an actual villain that doesn't want or need any excuses for his behaviour. akechi is protagonist 2.0 with the entire sob story trying to explain why he did what he did which makes him perhaps the complete opposite of adachi. which of the two you like is personal preference because of it.
@@sqfzerzefsdf this is simply false, akechi is as much a villain as Adachi , people thinking Akechi is secretly a good guy doing a wrong thing but regretting it and wanting it to stop (I really hope you didn’t mean you find excuses for his actions unlike Adachi because that would be disgusting) won’t change what the game tell us, that is just a delusion. (I will point out why a bit later in the comment) I also never said Akechi is a carbon copy of Adachi or anything like that I just pointed out they have the same role in the story and core motivations so close it’s obvious they made Akechi with the Adachi base Also you are completely ignoring as if that wasn’t one of the main points about Adachi: he’s a Yu who had no one by his side and started playing with people as he’s as smart and capable as the protagonist, does that remind you of someone? Dear god will people ever stop putting their headcanons about things you think happened off screen ahed of direct and explicit points made by the game itself? Akechi doesn’t act to mirror Joker (just as Adachi doesn’t do everything to fight Yu, the “you could’ve been better and more like me since we are alike” thing is something you can apply to any not flat villain who wanted good at some point, it would be childish to pretend Akechi’s character would revolve around this generic concept) , he doesn’t act to stop the PT as a big ideological crash (watch the third semester antagonist for that) he wanted to become special above fools (which he stomps on without consideration) who called him detective after the crime he created and then solved cheating and ruin Shido’s life for the enjoyment he would take in revenge. This is simple basic understanding of his main goals, if you can’t get that then you can’t understand the stuff built around that.
Fun fact about Adachi: his ENG VA is first the same as Yu, but also is Johnny Yong Bosch whose voices Ichigo from Bleach, Lelouch from Code Geass, and the second Mighty Morphin Black Ranger. He's one of the most famous VAs for Persona, shared with people like Matt Mercer and Liam O'Brien.
I always wondered why they made Akihiko into such a protein head in the spin off games until I heard somewhere that that's how he was in original p3 and they just toned him down in the localization.
But, but, but, hold on hold on, Minato Arisato (Makoto Yuki) has so much more character growth in the movies. And he even gets to have a role in Shinji and Ken’s story arc. Yes, yes. Persona 3 movies very good. He goes from the “I don’t care” boi to the most caring boi. And it’s so good.
Aigis is the best girl from p3 for me, but I'll admit that's mostly because I simp over Karen Strassman's voice way too much. In the original dub, with all my respect to Maaya Sakamoto, you see Aigis more as a battle comrade than a romantic interest.
Hot take: Sumi is necessary to showing how Maruki's reality is hindering people's growth and having terrible effects on their mental health. I can't imagine just liking Maruki without liking Sumi. I think Maruki and Yoshizawa's storylines do a good job at justifying the other's existence. Akechi is the best tho so I liked the tier list but I wish I got to hear more reasoning for some of the characters' placements.
@@ShadowOfMassDestruction I wouldn't go that far. She does develop Maruki yes, but she also goes through her own character arc of self-acceptance and embracing her individuality. Sumire was someone who loathed herself and knew that people prefered Kasumi for being the superior twin at gymnastics and her confidant is about realizing she has value as her own person and isn't actually inferior to her sister. I loved it, she felt almost like a cross between a P5 and a P4 character. I think she'll hit home with anyone who has an inferiority complex and wished they were more special (kinda similar to Junpei, Yosuke, and Akechi in that regard). And on the flip side I think it goes both ways. Sumire helps develop Maruki's character but he also helps develop her's. It was because of the Maruki palace that we get to see how depressed and codependent Sumire really is. She was always relying on others to help her instead of facing her own problems. The Maruki palace is as important to her characterization as it is to his. We see in one of Maruki's flashbacks tapes that she was the one that told him life would be easier as Kasumi. Both characters flesh out the other.
@@ShadowOfMassDestruction Same. I think they should've let it be an option to let her join in the Shido palace since she wanted to help out. The game forces you to decline her offer for no real reason.
Glad to see that Akechi still ranks first, as he should. 😆 Seriously, his arc in P5R solidified him as one of my favs in all of media. Great tier list!
I love that Bebe is block way towards everyone trying to reach the top. I loved it when Crystal was stuck between choosing Bebe and the Justice social link in P3z
I found you a couple months ago from your Akechi video. I just played P5R for the first time last October and Akechi also became one of my favorite characters ever. It was so nice to find someone just as in love with him as me. I’ve now beaten P3, P4, P5S, and am currently playing P4AU. So happy to be in love with this wonderful franchise, thanks for all the great content. P.S Makoto Yuki in B tier is criminal. Highly recommend watching the persona three movies if you haven’t, he’s SOOO good in those. I love what they do with him. So much so to the point where he became a top 5 favorite fictional character. I just really relate to the arc he went on in those films. Anyway much love ❤
entered the video, went to the final to see the result, spent 30 minutes swearing to the air and complaining to myself about the list. then I left, nice video. 10/10.
Funny as hell video made all the better by the editing, it was so good. Pinoy really makes watching the highlights even after watching the VODs all the more worth it. Every joke about brown had me chuckling.
Nanjo just standing there in the backrooms just fucking sends me for some reason, props to the editor for being one of the best I’ve seen in a long while 👏
Yes! Yukari is great. Initially disliked her at first, but after I had a better understanding of her character she’s actually pretty well written and relatable
Absolutely agree (except the part about initial dislike). P3 is my favorite game in the franchise, and Yukari is my favorite character in that game. S+
Yukari feels the most like a real girl out of all the games. She’s not a caricature. She’s great - also probably the best team member out of all the games
I came here just to say that Koromaru is best boy because any time he's near a seriously hurting orphan, he makes a beeline straight for them. (I will never not melt any time I so much as think about Koromaru and Akechi in Q2)

She made the VESSSSSTTT!!! i remember! way back when, the Great Ace Attorney Chronicles was about when I discovered this channel, and I remember her saying she wanted to make the vest! And it's happened! So coooool! :D
Yes!! I finally got the time and chance to make it very recently! Still got some finishing details to do on it, but it was my first professional sewing job where inside and I is really clean so I was really proud
I was surprised by how much I liked Ohya! I thought she had a terrible introduction and pretty terrible abilities, but I found her story compelling and it did help explain her worse points imo
@@anotherkenlon i dont think people really hate her but more like dont care about her because of her useless abilities and the bad first impression she gives she's drunk 90% of the time it dosent give a good impression
I can’t understand how P1 characters beated the crap out of characters from P2: Maybe it’s because P1 had the manga but that’s incredibly unfair to me, on the other hand Tatsuya wasn’t considered as both him in IS and EP: It’s hard to say he’s anything special in IS but in EP he’s the freaking best, best protagonist ever and I cannot believe you put most of the other MC above him. I feel like people who rank him lower than other protagonists just didn’t get him. The important thing about him isn’t the shit that happened to him but him learning to deal with traumas, responsibility as an adult, consequences of his actions, letting go things in the past he can’t go back to, learning how to rely on others while also keeping them a bit away so they won’t get hurt. I honestly don’t agree at all with the “relatable” thing, a character doesn’t need to relate to you to be compelling but Tatsuya is indeed relatable to anyone becoming an adult and struggling to handle responsibilities and “being a man” for males. (Which is extremely fitting for the most masculine and “chad” from IS) He’s a masterpiece of a character which builds upon the way he was portrayed in IS and it’s shocking to be seeing characters like Elly above him. It’s not like they are not good but Tatsuya plays in another league in my opinion, you may dislike him more than I do but the amount of stellar writing put into him (the additional scenery also has to be considered canon because the original writer came back after more than 10 years to give an extra to his most beloved character) is extraordinary and should be respected so we can have a protagonist like him again in the future. That being said anyone can rank him as they see fit, I just wanted to bring out why I think he deserved to be praised and I would like to hear the takes of everyone on him as well as yours Christhal (you said next to nothing about him).
@@anxhelovucinaj1576 glad there are people out there who gets what I’m saying, honestly I believe there’s a false myth about P2 in general. First that EP and IS have the same overall quantity, when EP had a perfect pacing and an all star cast (Ulala is the least beloved but she got huge character development, believable human issues and is an integral part of the team who kept it together) And the second thing is that P3 buried it fine. I think the first three games can be considered a trilogy which finished on its prime. EP had a great execution (flawless in many ways) of the philosophy of the first games which is much more close to a classic JRPG but it still has a defined identity. If you ask me P2 EP beats P3 FES anytime, the latter may have a more interesting formula in concept (as the games after proved) but the quality is much better in EP. You just have to deal with a completely different formula but if you play EP immediately (without going crazy on the IS prophecy nonsense) you’re not going to forget it.
The slow mental conflicts were edited so dang well. The struggle is real, appreciate how objective you tried to keep your very subjective tier list. :D
I actually really loved Makoto. There was something with her that really clicked with me, and she became the first confidant I romanced because of that.
First off; big prop to the editor o7 and second: OUR BOI ZENKICHI, CLIMBING UP LETS GOOOO I played Striker, I personally absolutly hated it, BUT, BUTT, Zenkichi was such A GOOD character 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
CALLING ALL *REAL* PERSONA FANS Streamer "CrystAAHHL" has placed our lord and savior Tohru Adachi into the B Tier instead of S+. Even claiming that Rise is a better character WE MUST CANCEL HER NOW!!! #BreakFreeAdachi #AdachiAwards2023 #AdachiMariachi A+ editing to whomever edited this video. they put in W O R K XD
She has basically the opposite opinion on every character. My P4 favs are Rise and Marie, my P5 favs are Makoto and Hifumi (as well as Tae and Kasumi to a lesser extent). Also, Naoto is one of my least favorite P4 characters and Akechi is easily my least favorite character in P5.
I can totally agree with Akihiko. He's one of my favs out of all the Persona characters, but the other games he's in kinda just water him down to like... Protein addict dude sometimes
The fandom does the same thing too sometimes!! I feel like some people ignore his whole character and kinda just think of him as only liking protein and stuff
It’s cool that even tho she doesn’t really like him as much she understands what he represents. Most people who just diss adachi are just people who either expect this great villain man with the plan but then are let down at the truth (hehe truth. I fully think this is what the writers wanted), or simply just don’t understand his character/the concept of nihilism
@@RaspyCh Or they just don’t like a nihilistic asshole who doesn’t have an ounce of care about his impulsive actions. It’s perfectly fine to hate a well-written character, especially antagonists as low as Tohru Adachi. Hell, honestly I understand finding Adachi super underwhelming if you only played the original Persona 4 because it took a lot of supplementary content to get Adachi where he got. But goddamn, what he got over time: incredible. Golden, the Golden anime, Arena Ultimax episode Adachi, and the Manga offer such extensive takes for him that show he’s more than just a one-note twist villain.
This was one of the rare tier lists I didn’t skip to the end for. It was made entertaining from the edits and wasn’t do overdone, didn’t talk too much or too little about the characters. 8/10 list I don’t agree with everything but it’s overall valid 👌🏻
Meanwhile I like the nurse from P4... I did the hospital cause MONEH and she reeeally squicked me out at first. But going through her social link was hella satisfying, seeing her stop that bullshit and advocate for herself even thought it's hard... yeah. IT was great to see.
She didn't make me uncomfortable. At least it was a fictional character acting like this. But it was definitely weird. Her sl is extremely great tho imo
Crystal your videos are always such a blessing to see and always lighten up my mood no matter how bad the day was. You are such an entertaining person to watch and your editor is really knocking it out of the park, making the best moments even better. You two are a great combo! Hope both of you will stay healthy and continue to bring us amazing content!
Tbh I'm a wee bit mad at whoever made the list for not including a good chunk of characters across all the games, purely because they lacked a social link. Like ok sure: do I honestly care where *Kaneshiro* (or heaven forbid the SIU Director) goes for example? Not really. But there's a lot of good bosses and other memorable characters that got shafted :/
For Kazumi's sake; she wasn't implemented better because by the time Atlus realized that everyone loved her, what they could get out of her came from Royal, and... yeah, wasn't really enough even though I really like that she's a dancer and uses lever action shotguns.
I'm like halfway through this and I'm absolutely loving how many times your ranking of the characters was defined on how you felt about them relative to how you felt about Brown
Personalities set aside- I believe P3 (Minato Arisato) ends with the most powerful arcana (Universe Arcana). Wouldn't that put him above Joker and Yu in terms of power capabilities? He also sacrificed his own life for everyone to become the seal for humanity and prevent full destruction entirely. Yu- saves the TV world and investigates a murder... the story revolves more around their investigation team and self reflect. Joker does manage to get to the heart of the world to defeat Yaldabaoth with Sataneal and vanquish the evil that has been building due to the evil hearts of Man. Yeah, he ends with a 2 month prison sentence- but, that sacrifice is only a SMIDGE of what Minato did for humanity (potentially eternally a seal from destruction). Joker does manage to obtain the World Arcana. Universe>World. Minato at B is offensive- even if he is quiet and to himself. What ever happened to actions speak louder than words?
I'd love to see you do a tier list of Personas, either only the main ones or even all of them. Although if you did all of them that'd be a massive video.
I feel like as an actual character and Player Character slate he's near perfect he has his own traits and his choices let us reflect his personality in whatever way you want
I used to personally rank Ann and Ryuji higher, like when I was fresh off Persona 5, except experiencing the rest of the series and knowing more context convinced me their repressed queer feelings were entirely unintentional on the part of the lead writer except at most as just dumb gay jokes. I like Ryuji especially a LOT more as a "jock who realizes he's gay in college" than "jock who plays grab ass but gets mad if you read into that" and I'm pretty sure he's actually intended as the latter. Sad. :( edit: Strikers especially hammered it home. The absence would have absolutely made him gayer for Joker if that's how he was intended to be, and if anything he's just more straight somehow. Blegh!
