I’m glad you liked Philip Larkin and were able to obtain a copy of his “High Windows” poetry collection. As you say, his poems are very direct and easily accessible to the reader; nothing artsy-fartsy or la-di-da about his writing at all. I haven’t read Larkin for a while, but your comments made me want to check him out again. Francesca Peacock’s new book about the Duchess of Newcastle certainly sounds like a fascinating book about a fascinating person. I have another biography of Margaret Cavendish by Katie Whitaker published in 2002 called, “Mad Madge: The Extraordinary Life of Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle, the First Woman to Live by her Pen”. Whitaker’s book is among a large number of unread volumes on my shelves, and I have to admit that I know more about her husband, William Cavendish, Duke of Newcastle, because of his role as one of King Charles I’s Royalist generals during the English Civil War. I’m afraid I glutted myself on 17th century England about a year ago when I read the 2,500-plus pages of Samuel Pepys’ Diary, in which the Duchess of Newcastle makes a few cameo appearances. Pepys always had an eye-and often more than just an eye-for the ladies, and on one occasion he describes ordering his carriage to go racing after the Duchess’s in hopes of catching a glimpse of her. It wasn’t until the Duchess paid a visit to the Royal Society-of which, as you know, she was the first woman member-on the evening of May 30, 1667 that Pepys was finally able to satisfy his curiosity about her looks. He found her to be “a good, comely woman”, but otherwise unremarkable, wearing a distinctly unfashionable gown. Of course, Pepys was more accustomed to the company of saucy and pretty young actresses from the London stage, which sometimes led to tremendous rows with his wife Elisabeth. in any case, Peacock’s biography seems worth reading the next time I’m in a mood for a visit to Restoration England. Come to think of it, Margaret Cavendish would be a great subject for a film biography, perhaps with Kate Winslet in the title role.

thank you so much for your comment!! i always love to hear (or rather read lol) your thoughts! Peacock actually does reference the Mad Madge biography towards the end of the book when she's discussing Margaret's reputation in more recent years. A diary from the 17th century that is more than 2500 pages sounds like quite the feat!! i would also be a little tired of the 17th century lol! agreed!! we need a film on margaret!

I always thought the expression went, "Wouldn't say shit if they had a mouthful." Can't recall ever hearing the goose or moose variation.
