In this video, I talk about one of my most read genres of 2020- urban paranormal fantasy. Who knew I would read most about a bunch of furries and blood fetishizing creatures pining over each other??? Not complaining though. Some of these gems are CHEF'S KISS!!!

Let's begin with me telling you that I've read all the books in the series you've mentioned. From the authors of Hidden Legacy, I'd recommend their Kate Daniels Series. It's Fantastic. It does have romance in that but more like Mercy Thompson. Where Kate finds her SO and their relationship develops through the books in the series. Kate is a Mercenary. You'll find shapeshifter, vampires, and all kinds of magical creatures in a post-apocalyptic world. The series is over now, but they just released the first book in a second spin-off that is just great. They also have another series called The Innkeeper Chronicles. Another Series for you to read would be Jane Yellowrock Series by Faith Hunter. Jane Yellowrock is a Native Indigenous Skinwalker and a vampire hunter. She is one badass woman. This series is not over and it has a spin-off series called Soulwood. I agree with you in the evaluation of the Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning and I would add that the romance between the main characters left me feeling very uncomfortable. She wrote more books continuing the series with Dani as the main character and she got a lot of backlashes because she wrote scenes with some sexual tension between Dani a 14-year-old girl and Ryodan a thousand-year-old man. She solved the problem with time travel in the following book. I DNF'ed book 7 and quit the series at this point. Chloe Neill has two great series: Chicagoland( vampires and werewolves) and The Veil ( post-apocalyptic with Faeries). Jeaniene Frost has the Night Huntress series and several spin-off series that are fun to read. It's heavy on romance but very entertaining. And, of course, The Dresden Files Series by Jim Butcher. Wizards, vampires, werewolves, faeries. There are other lesser-known authors and series that I follow that I love like Annette Marie(Red Winter and Spellbound series) and BR Kingsolver(Rosie O'Grady's Paranormal Bar and Grill Series). I could talk about those series all day but I think I took a lot of your time with my recommendations. Maybe you've even read or heard about some of these books and series. Take care and have a great day!

I would highly recommend Ilona Andrews' other Series, Kate Daniels (Magic Bites), it's completed with 10 books and has an even more interesting worldbuilding than Hidden Legacies. The romace aspect is also extremely tuned down and slow going!

Series mentioned : . *The Mercy Thompson series* (involves 12 books ,currently) - Plus has a spinoff series (5 books) . *Written in Red/The others* (slowburn, character driven ,somewhat dark , 5 books) Plus 2 spinoff books . *The Hidden legacy* (heavy on romance, triology + spinoffs) . *The fear series* (5 books ,heavy on romance ,but not really healthy, if it makes sense )

OMG, I'm trash for Urban Fantasy! Mercy Thompson is by far my favorite, but if you're interested in reading more from that genre, I also enjoyed the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost, and the Call of Crows series by Shelly Laurenston. Also, the Charlie Davidson series by Darynda Jones. I've only read the first book in that one, but it has an interesting premise: the main character is a grim reaper.

As a lover of paranormal and urban fantasy, I am very happy to see a video like this. For some reason, I feel like there isn't as much coverage on this genre. Anyways, I really really recommend Nalini Singh and Sherilyn Kenyon. Singh's 'psy-changeling' and 'guild hunter' series are the best. Sherilyn kenyon's 'dark hunter series' is also really good.

I love Urban Paranormal Fantasy novels. Patricia Briggs is my all time favorite. One series I would recommend is the Elemental Assassin series by Jennifer Estep. I do want to preface this by saying I’ve only read 4 of them so far but each new book I read in the series has gotten progressively better. Definitely more dark and gritty than Patricia Briggs. I enjoy the world building and the fact that the main character isn’t perfect. I would also tentatively recommend the Heartstrikers series by Rachel Aaron. This is based on me reading the first book in the series and a spin off novel Minimum Wage Magic. I LOVE the world Rachel Aaron has created. I also found them pretty funny. Pretty close to Patricia Brigg’s style.

Omg I've started reading Mercy Thompson series and the covers are hideous but the story is very quick paced and addictive. Anne Bishop is my favourite author of the genre and the covers of the Portuguese versions are beautiful, compared with the original ones. The romance in The Others was so nice, slow and made total sense. You saw the characters knowing each other, learning how to deal with their traumas, build a friendship and have a glimpse of a future relationship.

I’ve read all those series and agree with your general impression One of my favorite series that includes a wide range of characters who all have great character developments though the books is the Hollow/Rachel Morgan series by Kim Harrison! It’s awesome! Another classic of the genre, though a bit outdated by some points (I just reread it) and a bit heavy in romance but lots of murders and lots of inter species political intrigue is the Southern Vampire Mysteries/Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlainr Harris, that lead to the show True Blood. Charlaine Harris is pretty prolific in the genre and has more recent series that you might also enjoy. Oh and a fun fact I learned not so long ago, Ilona Andrews is a pen name for a writer duo (husband and wife I believe), not a real person. Or I guess two real persons ;) I’m glad the genre is getting a bit more out there and it’s neat to see a video about it! Like you said, there are a lot of reader of urban fantasy but it’s not seen a lot on RU-vid and other platforms. I’m glad you had a great time with the genre so it did not out you out of it. Because I gotta say, despite loving the genre, I sadly had to weed out a lot of series that seems promising because it was real bad lol Oh and another opinion: that may be an older title but the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton used to be really popular (not sure sure if it’s still is - there are a lot of books in the series) but I wouldn’t bother with it. I used to love the first books but man, didn’t go downhill fast and hard...

BUT I have recently started the Shadowchasers series by Seressia Glass and...wow. Black MC, set in Atlanta, ancient Egyptian mythology? So far it's doing everything right and I'm in love with it. I devoured the Hidden Legacy series this summer. CANNOT wait for the sixth (or third, if you look at Catalina's books as an individual series) book. The Fever series, tho.... I used to like it and grew to hate it. And it's more than five books now. I'm pretty sure it's still going on. Dropped it after book 7 cause I love myself too much. It just got worse and worse. Have yet to read The Others series, but since you mentioned it's more character focused, I'm gonna bump that up on my list, cause that sounds like just my jam. Urban Fantasy is probably my favourite genre (although I do hate shifter stories), and my fave series is The Dresden Files. It currently has seventeen books and two short story collections, which is daunting, but I highly reccomend it, because it has the BEST cast of side characters ever. Other great ones are the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaranovich, the Hollows series by Kim Harrison, and the Alex Craft series by Kalayna Price.

Indigenous person here to pop in and say, yes, Mercy is great but she isn't a shape-shifter, she's a skin walker. That is what ties into her Indigenous heritage. Love Anne Bishop and the Other's series. Fever series is pretty great, NGL. But you are correct it's problematic. Have you read Kim Harrison's Hallows series?

I'm not a big fan of paranormal-urban fantasy, but I have read some goods. The one I like the best is The Dragonsbreath series by Susan Elline, Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead, and Bloodlines which is also by Richelle Mead. Bloodlines is a spin off series to Vampire Academy that follows a different character, but where there are some characters that were in the past series. I would say that romance was pretty heavy but not to much? Don't take my word for it, I haven't read this in 3 years.

For such a common element I feel like a lot of writers aren't very good at writing romance, it often just feels false. The only things I've read recently that I didn't hate the romantic relationships has been "The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue" and "The Diviners" series. Both excellent, btw, though not your stereotypical werewolves and vampires urban fantasy.

Ilona Andrews is also an urban fantasy author. Her Kate Daniels Series has romance but as a part of life subject. The focus is not the romance. Even in their paranormal romance the plot advances independently from the romance.

Depends on the series. Their Kate Daniels series is definitely Urban Fantasy and not romance driven. Their Hidden Legacy and The Edge series are both more paranormal and are more romance driven. Their Inn Keeper Chronicles series is SciFi with romantic elements. And the 2 Kate Daniels spin offs are also more on the urban fantasy side.

@TheGoofy1932
@TheGoofy1932 3 года назад
If you haven't read Ilona Andrew's Kate Daniels series I would definitely strongly recommend it. (10 books and it's completed) Less romance than their Hidden Legacy series but more world building. (Magic Breaks #7 in the series is about as close to urban fantasy perfection as you can get). Anne Bishop's series is so refreshing. Meg and Simon are my favorite book couple. Love Patricia Briggs, both of the wolf series are great. C. P. Rider has a great series with a lot of representation. Suzanne Wright has several good series, particularly her Dark in You series, but the romance is more on a Hidden Legacy Plus scale. Annette Marie also has an excellent series called Guild Codex. This is a very slow burn. There's also an excellent spin-off for it (Guild Codex -Demonized). It's better than the original and the original was very good. Another good one is Nalini Singh, especially if you like political machinations in your books. Her Guild Hunter series is very character driven but her Psy Changeling series has a lot of political machinations in it. So happy to see someone talking about adult urban fantasy. I feel like almost all I see is YA anymore and I just don't have the patience for it.
