I was at Holly Black's recent book tour and someone actually did ask her about Cardan's tail and she explained that she made him have one because she really wanted to get across and emphasize how the fae in the world she created are not just humans with pointy ears or simply humans with wings, that they really are a completely different creature. thought it was very interesting to hear her perspective on this!

So basically Cardan is Nightcrawler from X-Men without the blue skin and with a crappier personality LOL. (Yes, I read ALL of Folk of the Air and regretted it shortly thereafter.) Ex-fanfic authors and J. K. Rowling sure do like ripping off comic books and anime. This is why I dislike the most popular YA. Holly Black is NOT the fairy queen and if she really loved fairy fandom she'd recognize Brian and Wendy Froud as THE royal couple of Fair Folk fiction fandom by now...

@@hellograce19 tell a hardcore vampire fan that Stephanie Meyer is the Vampire Queen. They would be understandably irritated and frustrated at such a claim since 90% of fans consider Anne Rice to be the Vampire Queen (and rightfully so). Now perhaps my language is a bit strong as these are books/fandoms I am discussing, but I do firmly believe that Brian and Wendy Froud deserve FAR more mainstream respect as the Faerie royalty that they are. I have no doubt that Holly Black would agree. She has tirelessly used her fame to try to bring awareness to classic faerie books like Emma Bull's War For the Oaks and Terri Windling's Borderland, since those are the kinds of stories she always wanted to make. Sadly, they just aren't the kind that trend as far as these big YA publishing companies are concerned and doesn't have as much freedom as those 80s era writers did before YA was a term. It's obvious that Black knows she isn't the Fairy Queen, since she's always brought attention to those she knows deserve that title more than her. She's a true fan of the genre and I honestly respect that. Also, quite frankly, comic books and manga are often pilfered by certain authors and there isn't anything wrong with saying so. Yes, Cardan does bear a strong resemblance to 80s era Nightcrawler, curly dark hair, elf ears, gold eyes, tail, and all. It's just that Cardan is more human-looking since he has white skin and five fingers instead of three. (Ironic because Nightcrawler is a mutant-human and Cardan is a fae.) And yes, the white-haired knight in Tithe is clearly a written description of Yoshitaka Amano's Vampire Hunter D illustrations. And, yeah, Harry Potter does look almost exactly like Timmy in Neil Gaiman's Books of Magic (which even Alan Moore had to take a little poke at in his series The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen). Now Black is an obviously a fan of comics and manga, so it's understandable she would take inspiration from those illustrations, particularly since she is an ex-fanfic author. (Old habits die hard.) Meanwhile, Rowling is admittedly sketchy for not confessing her obvious influence from X-Men and Neil Gaiman. As someone who is in both the comic book and fantasy fandoms, it's impossible NOT to notice such overt references. Seriously, I could write a whole book about this stuff and I probably will LOL

I am the same way with my wife. There are very few booktubers that I enjoy watching and its mainly due to what I consider relaxed, down to earth, atmospheric, home like vibes. On top of that, there is a similar taste in books, and of course, Netherlands. We've been to Amsterdam once and we miss it 😪

To anyone who liked The Folk of the Air books and wants to know more about Cardan's intentions, his upbringing, and how he fell for Jude/ why he was manipulated into bulling her for things her sister actually did: read "How The King of Elfhame Learned To Hate Stories". The artwork in this book is beautiful and there is an extended chapter at the end that took place after The Queen of Nothing. I loved reading Cardan's pov. If anyone is on the fence about him, I'd recommend reading it. It's very cute and fits into the trilogy well. EDIT: I honestly think Holly Black gave Cardan a tail because she wanted to make her Fae as realistic as possible. Not trying to make them necessarily seem desirable (but obviously the Fae and Cardan are seen as beautiful to Jude because she wants to be one, and grew up with them, and because we're in Jude's head the entire time). That's why her Fae are described as having green or blue skin, shark teeth, horse feet, tails, horns, a "twisted in turned nose" like the Roach, ect. She wasn't trying to make them hot like SJM. If she was she'd probably have included more smut scenes.

i know that this comment is quite old, but i wanted to agree to the 2nd part. Holly Black has been writing modern faeri tales/ faerie stories since 2002, and the faeries in those are also folklore-like with hooves, wings, tails, horns etc. So i think it's unlikely that she was "inspired" by ACOTAR (and also one comment mentioned her stating that her goal was to make the more "not-like-humans").

True observation about Leigh Bardugo's character writing. I've always loved Zoya, right from Shadow and Bone (I tend to sympathise with characters who work super hard at something and then a "chosen one" comes along, does the bare minimum or doesn't even want to be there and gets everything) but of course even I can admit that she didn't really get over the mean-girl archetype until King of Scars/Rule of Wolves.

Yes exactly! I've always said the the folk of the air's strongest point is the complicated familial relationships! TikTok did that series so dirty by overhyping the romance that why so many ppl went into it expecting a fantasy romance & were disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Jude & Cardan's romance but it was a pretty small part of the book in comparison to the politics & family drama. I think the Stolen Heir being more romance forward is Holly Black's response to the ppl who expected more romance in the cruel prince. The hooves made me cackle every single time tho lmao it was like a jumpscare

I agree with **almost** everything you said about The Cruel Prince vs The Stolen Heir. The only things I disagree about is that the Jude and Cardan romance was low heat and that the characters in TSH were more interesting, but maybe that's just because I really love Jude and Cardan and wanted to see them again in TSH. Thankfully the ending of TSH is set up in a way that pretty much insures they will be in the second half of the sequel, so I'm excited about that. And regarding the romance, Jude and Cardan's love arc started with burning lust and developed into love, which I think is more fun than just vanilla friends growing closer lol There was only one kissing scene in both the first books in each series as far as I recall, and Jude and Cardan's kiss was miles hotter! How can you even compare an impulsive kiss at a party to "You really do want me... And you hate it" mutual punishment make out session at knife point??? It's so much angstier! I really didn't feel it with Wren and Oak. They're cute, but they have by far less chemistry compared to Jurdan. So yeah. I would argue that TCP was more spicy than TSH. since you enjoy holly blacks faeries i highly recommend her stand alone "the darkest part of the forest". i think that book has some of her most interesting concepts. its set in a human town where everyone knows about the folk, and there's a coffin in the woods with a horned faerie sleeping inside around which teenagers regularly hold parties. she also wrote my favorite ya vampire book "the coldest girl in coldtown" which has some of my favorite world building ever, and comments on tropes of the genre and how we romantize vampires while also totally playing into them (hundreds of years old love interest who has definitely murdered people falling for teenager and such) its so unhinged and i adore it

The Curseworkers is some more rly good Holly Black stuff. It's about magic and con artists so its not exactly the same as the faeries but it's still got the tricksters, complicated main characters, and fun stories.

I love faeries, just not Holly Black or Sarah J. Maas' faeries. A little too much human y/n soap-opera, not enough inhuman, ethereal, surreal, fairy tale vibes. I like my fae one way: Weird. Brian Froud weird. Neil Gaiman's Sandman: A Midsummer Night's Dream weird. Hence my love for Patricia A. McKillip and Joanne M. Harris...

MC is a professor studying the folk and is building the first comprehensive encyclopedia about them, she goes to a small town in order to study and research them and it has a ton of different faerie tales, plus there’s romance but it’s not really shoved in your face (a lil until the end but that makes sense later)

I love Holly Black’s depiction of Fae. They’re not some bulky guys with magic and pointy ears but match with true faerie folklore. The only other author who has shown fae like this (that I know of) is Margaret Rogerson in An Enchantment of Ravens. I wish there were more authors who did this

I still think Holly Black focused her heavy political aspect while there was a war mounting. It showed Jude’s rise to power as the sole ruler of Elfhame well and how she dealt with power being thrust on her in a tense situation and how she could finally take control. It was a final character moment and definitely one of my favorite parts of the final book. The whole series even. tldr Jude girlbosses 🙏🙏

I think you'd definitely enjoy reading Leigh Bardugo's short story collection "The Language of Thorns", especially The Witch of Duva (which can be read separately as e-pub as well). While I love her books, for me Leigh truly shines in her short stories, it's the folkloric lyrical element that does the IT effect!

@@theangel4054people hyped it up as an enemies to lovers romance, while it is, it is incredibly slow burn. the romance is a sub-plot, so take what you want from that. the plot is still great though, and the politics was definitely interesting and stressful but still very enjoyable. if you plan to read just the cruel prince, you may not be satisfied

If you like Holly Black's books then I really suggest you read How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories; it's the trilogy from Cardan's point of view. It's just so so good to reads his thoughts and it really adds a lot of nice details. I'm not really good at describing books just know that it is good from the opinion of a Holly Black fan.

Yes! I felt the second climax in Queen of Nothing was not needed and took away from the relationship that had just blossomed so well… but it would also be kinda cool if it’s ever turned into an adaption. Either way still loved the book and the series 🫶 the graphic novel for the darkling definitely has my interest peeked, I might have to read that next!

I’ve read the folk of the air series and have read the stolen heir recently, and oh boy… this book was a let down for me personally. I found Wren’s character so bland, and her narration was a bit exhausting to read. I think the book would work WAY better if the main character and narrator was Oak - I mean, he has lived, like, eight years as the potencial heir and bloomed into a teenager and we got to see nothing of his development? I would not care for Wren’s pov if she actually mentioned his journey, but no. Their “romance” was also a let-down… the chemistry is nonexistent, and like every reader that expected an enemies to lovers trope (since they had an sort of arranged marriage), I was utterly disappointed. But the biggest let-down in this book is the lack of ANY scene with Jude and Cardan (I mean, I guess they are going to appear on the sequel, but I was excited for them, okay? 🥲) - but that’s just my humble opinion, no hate to holly, I LOVE tfota series, but “The Stolen Heir” was not it for me :’)

I LOVED Wren! I wanted her to be even more unhinged at the end. Like damn she has it rough. Her arc was amazing and so tragic. I mean… the tongue… I was not ready. She’s had it wayyy worse than Jude. She needs a win in the sequel 😭 I also love having monster girl protagonist with sharp teeth. Oak is so fascinating to me and I love how he’s like Madoc with violence, which makes a lot of sense for him but I love how Holly Black makes very complex and flawed characters bc Oak is no dark prince like Cardan and he’s no golden prince either. He still can be selfish even if he feels for Wren but I love how she discussed how all the assassination attempts really affected him and his self sacrificing nature. I cannot wait for the sequel. Also- why is no one talking about the Undersea??? WHAT WAS THE MENTION OF THAT SEA DRAGON I must know

I like all the analysis you put into this. Honestly, I’ve read no Leigh Bardugo and the last time I read Holly Black was Spiderwick as a kid. Mind you, Spiderwick when it came out was my very favourite book series. So weirdly I think I’m going to reread Spiderwick and then see if I’m up for the newer books. And maybe try Six of Crows too based on your analysis.

I always just conveniently forget the tail and the hooves when I'm reading Holly Black characters haha. Would highly recommend In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan if you wanted to continue fairyland type stories or even The Dubh Linn trilogy by Ruth Frances Long for mean fairy vibes.

Ninth House series really feels a lot like Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files. Protagonist who’s sarcastic and snarky but with a troubled past. Cast of side characters who each have a special thing. Magical investigations in the modern world. Might all be circumstantial but I can’t stop finding parallels

Look, i'm not a fury but i find the tail to be cute lmao. You got me to read TFOTA and Rebel of The Sands series, so thank you so much for that, i love them both so much! I finished TFOTA, including cardan's perquel, in about a week straight because i just loveeee the fairy world. Heck, i even like locke's lore. For rebel of the sands, i think i just need more of the characters, so i feel like i need to read some fanfiction straight after finishing the series. I definitely trust your recommendation for my taste. Love your vids!

Ahh so excited recently finished queen of nothing i really liked it but felt the ending was a tad rushed even tho it felt like it took up like 100 pages? Idk if that makes sense aha... Reading circe atm!! Thank you leoo i love the video and also love how you make lists its so helpful!

I agree. Loved QoA overall plot and some FANTASTIC character scenes, but it didn't have the realistic gradual build as much as the others. In some ways I found Wicked King TOO slow (yes Jude, we get it; you're in denial about Cardan so can we focus on STOPPING the Undersea threat that has been hovering menacingly for 10 chapters now?) but maybe I was just impatient to see what was going to happen! But maybe a balance between the slow S L O W burn of WK and how rapidly the QoN plot actually unravelled would have been the best. Still love this trilogy beyond all reason though. Have you read How the King of Elfhame Came to Hate Stories? I thought it was the best of all!

I would pronounce 'Elfhame' to rhyme with 'came' or 'lame', because that's how the Norse 'Alfheimr' would be pronounced (ignoring the 'r' ending, which is masculine nominative).

Not exactly, but close enough, and definitely better than the other option. In Scots the cognate word could even have a sort of long eh-sound sometimes.

Omg please read The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo if you want to get into more of her short stories!! I still think about some of the stories in it to this day even though I read it so many years ago. The illustrations are so beautiful and unique too!!

I love the folk of air series so so much , but about Cardans tail I have to say, I never thought it was attractive (or that scene --weeird) . I remember when I first read it I tried to completely ignore the fact that he has a tail lol. But looking back I think its a really good way, to show that faes arent just extremely beautiful graceful humans with pointy ears, In fact it de-romantisizes how people see Fae, where in fact they are completely different creatures with more animalistic characteristics. As a human a tail seem to be monstrous and I loved that we experience Cardan as a mean creature with a tail .. really represents how Faes actually should look like : ENormous, monstrous, hideous creatures ( who can also look like goddesses )

ok so i think leonie has inspired to retry the cruel prince/folk of the air series. read the cruel prince on a whim when it first came out and i can’t remember if i finished it or even enjoyed it… but everything i hear about it just sounds more and more like what i’d enjoy!! ❤

Leo if you loved this folk of the air books, you would definitely love the ones that come before them as well, aka the Tithe trilogy and then The darkest part of the forest book !! Imo they are weaker then Tcp, but even darker with amazing characters (who cameo in tcp btw) lol

Everytime I finish your video I wish we were friends with you in real life. Also we seem to have the same taste in books, everything I've read so far I've agreed with you, so I'll definitely take your suggestions. I was most interested in what you would say about the Queen of Nothing, and again I completely agree with you, I didn't expect you to do a video about The Stolen Heir so quickly, I want to read it even more now. If you want some dark fae and quest plot I seriously recommend The Name of The Wind (and the 2nd book The Wiseman's Fear) by Patrick Rothfus. Seriously wellwritten and not super high fantasy. Probably my favorite books ever. Beware, the thrid book is not out yet but there isn't a set date and he takes forever to write so might as well just read them.

I was so excited for Suren to be the main character of Stolen Heir. There’s no way her story could have been concluded by the end of the original series and I wanted so bad to see more of her so I’m so glad Holly Black is giving me food 🤲🤲

I think you have a point about the war being very different from the rest of the series, but for me it seemed natural because, after all, political intrigue is always about avoiding or trying to start a war. Maybe it's because I come from a military family, but I'm always expecting war to break out when there's political upheaval: it's just the most likely outcome 🤷‍♀️ And I liked how Jude and Cardan handled the war. But I think it could have been developed more gradually - I love QoN, but it really could have used to be longer and more developed more gradually - goodness, a real FOTA fan is going to WANT 100 more pages! 😆 I would advise just forgetting about the tail. It's not crucial to Cardan's existence that he has it - I don't mind it at all but I honestly don't think about it whenever he shows up in my daydreams - oh, I wasn't supposed to mention that . . . Don't tell Jude! 😆😆😆

I'mma say it, just finished The Stolen Heir and OMG IT MADE ME SCREAM TWO THNGS: HOLLY BLACK HOW CAN YOU END A BOOK LIKE THAT???? and also OMG THE STOLEN HEIR MAY BE BETTER THAN THE CRUEL PRINCE???? I was completely and utterly in love with the love in The Stolen Heir, and with Suren and Oak, character development, 1000000/10 and yes, you do see the plot twist coming but as you said, not in an annoying way, but like, in a satisfactory way actually. 100000000% recommend, as much as I adore Cardan and Jude's hardcore ENEMIES TO LOVERS vibes, friends to enemies to lovers is far more charming for me, hehe .
