Hi! My name is Leonie and I am a 24 year old girl who loves talking about books! From YA to non-fiction to classics, I read it all (although fantasy will always be my fave). I live in the Netherlands and go to university, but make booktube videos in my spare time :)

i watched an interview with Sally Rooney where she said that she doesn’t create characters, she creates dynamics. she starts with the dynamics and builds the characters around them and their different dynamics with different characters. it’s brilliant in my opinion.

This video was surprisingly emotional. I teared up a bit in the end and I have no idea why. I think I realized that I'm a 20 something woman with a lot of occupation, seemingly doing great in life but have very limited time to spend with friends. And this broke me a bit. It's a sad world truly. Not because of tragedy, but because we don't prioritize the happy encounters enough. Also, it's been a while since I read a book and feel such satisfaction with it. I miss that feeling. PS: Your editing in this video is pure perfection. Congrats!

yeah living in a capitalist society that values our productivity and consumerism over our humanity sucks. im a student paying my way through college while having a full time job. doing it all so i can graduate with a degree i don’t want but that will get me a job that i also don’t want. it’s scary. hope things get better for you and you find that book!!

There is something incredible about a book hitting at that perfect time in your life. Really enjoyed this - I feel like I sat and reflected on life and twenty-something-ness with you. (and the little asmr type sounds scattered throughout were a wonderful touch… maybe that’s why I felt so present?? :)

The existential crisis of your 20s is “my friends are getting married” vs your 30s when it becomes “my friends now have kids and my parents were my age when I was born” that hit different levels of “what am I doing with my life”.

Plant tips: Cut out the dead parts of the plant, they are smothering the rest of the plant! Replanting them is also important but if you don't have time now get some plant food to nourish the soil they are in.

I relate so much to what you said about feeling like you're behind in life. I believe we are the same age and so many are getting married and having kids. It's not what I want for myself at the moment, but it still makes me feel so weird and melancholic. I still feel like I'm way too young for these things. It makes me feel like I am living my life in the wrong way (which is stupid, because there is NO right way), but I feel like I did something wrong at some point in my life. I graduated with master's last year, now I'm working at a notary office and I'm still living with parents to save money for an apartment. + I also liked Beautiful World Where Are You so much more than Normal People.

I’m 28 and feel the exact same way. I feel like I’m still right out of college but I’m not. I’m expected to have children soon and get married (which I want to do with my partner but I’m not ready at all) but I never feel like it’s the right time. It’s kind of sad sometimes to realize how much time has passed but not feeling like it has.
@whateverbabe
@whateverbabe 2 года назад
I feel the same and I'm 27, there's so much pressure while I don't want to get married unless I find a nice guy, as for children I don't want any. I'm still healing from early 20s trauma and I still want to make my dreams come true.
@aroonia8
@aroonia8 2 года назад
@@whateverbabe It's so sad that so many others feel that awful pressure. I mean, I was barely 20 when I started getting questions whether I have someone special and if I'll have children. I've always been told by others that I'm weird because I've never been in a serious relationship and I don't date casually. I'm rather forever single than just date just for the sake of it. And so far I haven't met anyone for whom I'd change that. I'd much rather be alone forever than be in a relationship for the wrong reasons. And when I answer that I don't need anyone and I'm not sure whether I will ever have children I only get negative responses. It sucks that even the closest people don't understand that what I want from them is just to wish for me to be happy and understand that for me happiness is not connected to my relationship status or whether I will or will not have children. They force this view on me that if I don't do the same things as the majority of the people do then my life isn't complete and I won't be happy. Not everyone wants the same things in life and it should be okay.
@aroonia8
@aroonia8 2 года назад
@@BooksToAshes I still feel like it just was 2013. Where did the time go? 🥲
@whateverbabe
@whateverbabe 2 года назад
@@aroonia8 I totally understand how you feel! I actually admire the fact you didn't settle down for less than what you deserve, I didn't want relationships before but I ended up loving a guy who became so controlling and manipulative through time, I wasted a decade of my life on him and at the end I just lost feelings and left it. Now I'm focusing more on myself and I honestly would rather live my whole life single and not go through the same thing. Cause relationships require a lot, you get the responsibility of yourself and the other person and if you are a ppl pleaser or kind person like me they end up manipulating you trying so hard to turn you into a version of them.. (not all are bad just speaking from my experience) Please keep on living your life the way you want and don't settle down unless you find a suitable person. There is more to life than just a lover, love is around us in all its forms. As for marriage and kids, society and the whole world will push you to do it cause when speaking biologically it is reproduction that keeps us from going instincts so most ppl have that urge to breed.. and they can't stand those who go against what they all do. I wish you the best in life 💕

You're so relatable, Leonie! I feel like epic fantasy properly understood is the best for dealing with trying times. My man Tolkien wrote, "Now it is a strange thing, but things that are good to have and days that are good to spend are soon told about, and not much to listen to; while things that are uncomfortable, palpitating, and even gruesome, may make a good tale, and take a deal of telling anyway." I have added "Beautiful World, Where Are You?" to be my tbr list. Enjoy! :-)

As a fellow 24 yo about to turn 25 in a few months, I am constantly reminded of a similar sinking feeling every day of not living the life that the society deems fit for a 25 yo to be living and it hits the hardest when people your age around you, friends are getting married and settling down, having kids within a few years and doing the 'right' thing, following the 'correct' path which is socially prescribed. But what about the rest of us, who don't care for that path, who want to live at our own pace, make our paths and follow that? I feel we as human culture and society have a few generations and many decades of mental evolution to achieve before these markers of success & happiness in life i.e - marriage and children are no longer vital necessities/ parameters or milestones in life to be deemed happy & successful. I hope for the day when people who don't choose to opt for the traditional path are spared the glaring judgement of society and live life without being seen as a freak/social outcast. I would recommend Sayaka Murata's Convenience Store woman to you, Leonie. It follows a 36 yo woman protagonist and her life decisions to be a non-conformist made her a stand out like a sore thumb. It's a very interesting concept for a book exploring non-conformity and all the commentary on patriarchy, misogyny and capitalism, conformity to heterosexuality are so so bold and interesting.

Honestly same. In my 30's and I'm tired of hearing that things get better as you get older. Sometimes it just doesn't. You can either stop caring or just try not to stress over things that are out of your control. I work hard w/ 3 jobs and still have no financial stability. I can't even afford a house even though its my dream. I don't want children because I know I can't provide for them. I've had so many panic attacks and major breakdowns over it. Now I just try to find joys in the little things and be grateful for what I have. It's all I can really do.

Hey Leonie, Beautiful world where are you is perfect fit I think. I loved it so much!!! And because you spoke about being twentysomething years old, I can also highly recommend the defining decade decade by Meg Jay. I felt really understood by it. Much love 🌻🧡

I love that you were watching EUROVISION with your friends ❤️❤️ I also did that and had such a great time, which I think kind of fits the message of “enjoying the simpler things in life”. I’m a huge Eurovision fan and I loved De Diepte, it was my favourite performance that evening. Greetings from Germany

I stumbled into a work trajectory that I grew to love because I was good at it and I worked with amazing people...and then the business operations powers that be had other ideas, and lots of people had to figure out what else to do with their time (and to pay bills). I still have no idea what I want to do. There are some things I'm interested in doing, but "real life" isn't presenting a good case for me to be more "serious" about it. It's okay not to know what you want to or even if you really like what you're doing, even if you don't completely hate it. Doesn't matter how old are young you are. It's okay to look at your friends/peers for some inspiration but try not to fall into the rabbit hole of keeping pace with them. You don't even have to keep pace with your past self's vision for your future self.
