Thank you SO much for watching my little video on the Gossip Girl book series! It would mean the world if you could like the video, leave a comment, subscribe and share with your friends 🥰 What was your favourite moment from the book series? Who is your favourite character? And most of all, did any of this sh*t happen in the TV show? I'd love for you to tell me all the differences and similarities. You know you love me! XOXO Gossip Gav 💋
Did I ever watched this show? No. Have I read the books? Also no. Will I ever watch it or read it? No. Am I watching the whole 4 hours of this masterpiece? Yes, yes I am.
Can confirm Chuck did not have an actual monkey in the TV show but he did acquire a dog called Monkey in season 5 after he literally becomes numb to all physical pain after Blair agrees to marry Louis (the prince of Monaco). It's very dumb and I've just realised that I'm full of unnecessary GG TV show trivia 😅
Idk why that smal tidbit made me so happy when he got the dog and named it that. Basically nothing is like the books but i thought that was so cute for them to add it in
I read these as they came out when I was 13-18. I loved them. I loved the kind of ironic humour and the use of GG as a narrator who disliked the characters. I thought it was clever that B and S were fighting over N who was clearly a complete loser. I also thought it was clever that the "anti-N", D, was more like N than not, and also a complete loser. I didn't date in secondary school and I think it's partly because of these books.
Oh my gosh Gavin!!!! The amount of time that went into this video not just with reading the books but the editing!!! The voiceovers!! Wow I am blown away, you’re an icon!! 😍🤩 no one is doing it on booktube like you are Gavin!!! You go above and beyond and I admire you so much for it 🙌
I can’t believe Chuck’s pet monkey was Gossip Girl all along. Anyway, this was a great video and I’m super glad the algorithm decided to show it to me! Can’t wait to watch the one on pretty little liars. ❤
I read all the books in my early teens, probably around 13-16 years old. I had no memory of how I felt about them. However, I love the show. I've rewatched it several times and it's totally iconic. I was so shocked watching this to learn about how bad the books were. Since you survived all the books, you should watch the show! After this, I'd love to see you talk about It Girl with Jenny.
I remember having the first book on audio when I was like 12 because I had an iTunes gift card and my dad just assumed by the title it was a preteen book….I’m still haunted by the “parted my Red Sea” part lmaoo
Omg I'm so glad I found your channel! Can't wait to watch ur TVD and PLL videos after this cause I always struggled to get through all these shows books
Got the heated blanket on, a flask of hot chocolate and a whole load of snacks to keep me company for this one - only a few minutes in but already know this is going to be a fun ride! Can’t beat a mega Gav video - thank you!
It’s interesting how many side characters show up in the show but have so little to do with any of the book plotlines lol. Like the show writers really skimmed through the books and went “Damian, that’s a good name, let’s do something with that.”
This was a WILD ride, worth every minute! I can only hope now that someone publishes Dan’s poems so that we can roast them properly! 😂. Insane the amount of work you did! What an inspiration!
GAVIN. THIS IS A CINEMATIC MASTERPIECE. I think you would really like reading The Clique novels by Lisi Harrison. Private school girls in Westchester, New York, popularity contests, fashion, boys, mean girls, etc. There’s also a movie directed by the one and only Tyra Banks. Idk why I’ve never thought to suggest them before but I think they’d be right up your street! AMAZED by the dedication you have to consuming this media for us. ♥️ Can’t wait for the next one!
'Apple-white arms' is the only truly lovely and poetic phrase Dan ever managed to write that we learn of. Source: I have actually written prize-winning poetry before.
i have fallen asleep to this every single night since it came out and every single morning i have had to go back and rewatch the last section where i fell asleep cos *aerosmith voice* i don't wanna miss a thinggggg superb video. you have such a calm and cosy vibe, it's really relaxing. but as a show watcher who suffered through the finale in real time i CANNOT BELIEVE the gossip girl book reveal. the CHEEK. makes me so glad i never read past the first book, but your sacrifice is appreciated!
At chapter 4 and I’m howling at Dan’s the poetry saga. “You’re he next Keats????” I was also waiting for the rock band part bc I distinctly remember a scene where he was practicing in in front a mirror that I thought was the funniest thing. The description was something along the lines of “ he saucily stuck out his skinny gut and yowled the lyrics I’d love to see a video about the it girl series if you ever feel like making one. I remember enjoying it more than the gospel series because Jenny was a more enjoyable protagonist then Blair, Serena and Nate. The other characters were pretty similar, but I enjoyed it
I used to read this book series as a teen and watch the show. I loved it all so much I even did a presentation about the books in eighth grade. My friends even made my graduation year book entry look like the gossip girl website 😅
So in the show Chuck gets a dog in the beginning of season 5 who randomly disappears again when he's not convenient for the plot anymore and the dog's name is, get this, Monkey. The writers really thought they did something 😂
I hated the way Jenny was described. I had large breasts too as a young teen and it made me so embarrassed because it basically let me know that yes, everyone notices them first.
This sounds like the kind of storyline my friends and I came up with playing with Barbies as kids. Amazing that this is a published series and TV show. I thought that Dan was going to be the biggest cheater, he seems to give the vibe that he would go wherever his "heart" led and feel justified doing so, and doesn't seem like that impression is wrong even if Nate turned out to be the worst 😅
the biggest jaw dropping moment was how Jenny said she wouldn't get breast reduction surgery "because they were part of who she is" and then you find out in the prequel she was only well endowed because she took estrogen pills
OH GOSH I WOULD NEVER WISH THIS SERIES UPON ANYONE. But thank you for such an entertaining trip down memory lane. I’m glad you called attention to all the problematic things in here. I read these as a teenager when I was less discerning about problematic topics, but even back then these books were SO egregious that I noticed. Also, I’m sure you get this all the time, but do you mind letting me know what those rainbow books on your right are? They’re GORGEOUS. I just found your channel btw, can’t wait to binge the rest of your series videos
I've always loved Serena. I think her character (in both the books and the show--season 1) was the more satisfying of them all. I love the whole beauty queen in tears thing she's got going on. I think her selflessness in regards to Blair and Nate is the root of all her issues? Like if she had a backbone and really stood up for her and Nate, Blair would have just...moved on. Heartbroken sure, but she's got more direction and self esteem than Serena ever had lmao.
@@LeonC0704 initial selflessness. and tbh throughout. Nate and Serena were a THING before he and Blair even got together. But instead of being real with Blair about that, she left so Blair and Nate could be together. Pretty selfless no? Except her martyrdom is so misguided and far from what she wants, that it just becomes this toxic pattern: Serena wants Nate 😍, but so does Blair 😰, and Serena just wants Blair to be happy 🥺so, jk! Blair can have Nate 😌. But sike! Serena actually can't deny her love anymore so she indulges in the forbidden 🤫🤭. Rinse repeat 😂
@@itstheverve there's a case to say S & B were in love, but it was the 90s/2000s when that wasn't allowed, so there had to be Male Love Interests By Proxy
Commenting before watching the whole thing to let you know that you're a trooper for getting through this vlog! Thank you for always putting so much energy into your content, it really shows and all your videos are so entertaining ✨️💛
FOUR HOURS?? Legend .😭 Can’t wait to watch this after the day’s over and have all the stress be whisked away!! Also remember when you said in your live that none of the OP viewers would want to watch this? You were wrong because I love books AND One Piece. And nothing will keep me away from nostalgic series reviews. 😈
when I was that age the most hardcore thing I did was playing sims 1 and chatting on msn, how are they having that much s3x and also cheating which is so stressful?? my god
Ever since the reboot got cancelled, i got this sudden urge to read the books. However i wanted to hear it on audiobook on here (RU-vid) and even after all these years, there wasn't a complete book (and if there was, it was in a different language). So thank you for reading ALL of the books and 48hrs in making this 😂😂 i can't believe it carried for so long 😂 but honestly, thanks for saving me the headache bc that was frustrating! I'm glad that know one stayed together and that Chuck developed into a great person. Like i wonder why out of all the characters, Chuck was the one to evolve. But yeah, Nate has definitely came my lastest favorite. He gave me the most headache. I remember reading the first book, but all i remember was Jenny smoking pot with Nate and trying to look cool and like she knew what she was doing smoking 😅 Anyways thanks again this was amazing!
It's such a great video- I love how you're ranting! The relationship between Serena and Blair is a bit confusing here. The first interaction between them is, that Blair hates Serena and then they never talk again, till they're moving in together in book 4 or so? haha I read the books myself you know... I really tried it but couldn't make it any longer than 3 or 4 books- it is so bad, but I really wanted to know how the story went- so thank you very much for this video!
I have never seen Gossip Girl and I will never read these books, but I was here for this whole vlog😂. This was amazing, keep up this amazing entertainment ❤
This was amazing!!! Watching this makes me incredibly grateful I never ended up reading this series back in the day when I originally wanted to but also I’m super grateful to now know everything that happened in it!
I am so glad someone, anyone on BookTube remembered these exist! I ate them up so back in high school, so much so I read 13/14 of them (minus the spin-off) back-to-back in less than a month. Obsessed? Definitely. And now Gavin will explain it all in an appropriately lengthy discussion? Perfection. I am truly thankful for your dedication to educate the masses of the humble beginnings of GG!!!
It really brightened my day to come home from a tiring shift at work to find a nice long video waiting for me! I've never watched the show or read the books, so I'm excited to see what it's all about!
1. LOVED the opening. 3. 4 hours long? YES 3. I love how you only mentioned the OG show, she is top tier. 4. That is a MASSIVE glass of wine. 5. "Why friday? I dunno, ask rebecca black" I CACKLED. 6. 59:13 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 7. I was crying from the Dan poems. 8. I feel like teenage girls in the 2000s walking away from such situations insteading of being confrontational is very realistic. That was me. 9. 1:15:50 LOOOOOOOOOL 10. Georgina is such a top tier character on the show. You HAVE to watch it. 11. Chuck with a monkey just sounds like Ross with his monkey. 12. 2:25:00 Gav sobering up just as my alcohol is settling in. 13. 3:04:05 I'm....CRYING 🤣🤣🤣🤣 14. Wait til you find out the SHOW reason why Serena went to boarding school 👀👀 15. 3:29:13 Took Nate long enough to realise he's the one who needs to leave the situation! 16. 3:36:00 In Chuck we have always trusted. 17. Well done on the 4 hours! And all the editing and filming time it took!
The GG world is insane, because apparently there you can just walk up to a stranger, sober and in broad daylight; start one conversation with no pretext; and within minutes or hours you can be at least passionately kissing if not more. Do rich UMC people just have more access to spontaneous intimacy at every point in history? Or was this a specifically 2000s-era thing?
This intro and the graphics you’ve created are EVERYTHING. I’m so excited to watch this entire thing throughout my day off today. Your hard work is UNMATCHED💓
The bulimia issue is so infuriating. It's treated like it's twirling your hair or biting your nails, not a serious disease that damages your body. Such a bad example for young readers who are vulnerable to eating disorders.
I have been dying to get my hands on these books for a while but for some reason, they're so hard for me to find. I love the RU-vid algorithm because it lead me right to you. I subscribed as soon as you poured the wine in your glass.
Don’t take this the wrong way, but sometimes I play your longer series reviews so I can fall asleep (your voice is very calming). So, I took a nap, and now I’m actually watching the video and having the time of my life. Literally never seen Gossip Girl but I’ve been so excited since you posted that you were doing this, your PLL video is one of my favorites on your channel and this gave me the vibes ☺️
My favorite line in the whole video "the fact that this series was published in the first place, just shows you anything can happen!" I still have an hour left but just had to comment on that :D Loved this video!
Psycho Killer sounds like such a fun idea, just do a slasher version of your story, but it's literally the same book. And it doesn't take the obvious angle, which is to do a Scream rip off with the original plot, i.e. it's a mystery who the killer is and why they're doing this, the cast gets slowly bumped off, then big climax with a crazy twist like maybe the Gossip Girl site is them. It's right there!
2:07:47 as a woman with female friends, I would never bathe naked with them. That's not platonic. The B & S of the books flirt constantly, get jealous over each other, and end up sort-of together--they're a stealth couple, not 'besties'. Death of the Author here, sorry.
The slash rewrite is killing me, omg! The ways they're killing people make no sense, and they would 100% be caught if they're killing people like this. So many witnesses!!! Also, thank you for reading all of these so we don't have to!
Another series to check out if you haven’t already is The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris aka the True Blood novels. I enjoyed them (especially as audiobooks, the narrator is amazing) but they have LOADS of problems while also having fun moments. Some similarities with the first, maybe, four books if you watched the show, and then the show and books went in different directions.
Oh this is 4 hours so well spent 😂😂🤣🙌 Highest praise for Gav for actually reading this whole series & blessing us with this epically entertaining play by play review 👑🙌
You should do The Southern Vampire Mysteries AKA The Sookie Stackhouse Novels AKA the book series that was adopted into the True Blood TV show… it’s such a delicious mess 😂😂
Thank-you so much for all your effort slogging through this series (c'mon saga let's be real)... I tried recently to read the books and gave up after book 2....so all the props for making it to the end (never thought I would ever say that the TV show was EVER better written thank the source material) gold medal you you!!!
Dear Gavin, you are a KING! Haven’t read the books, but i’ve watched the TV show when I was younger. Looking back.. it’s so wrong, so problematic, so toxic, but the books! OMG, the books are so much worse! The fact that Nate was so important, and Chuck wasn’t! The fact that Blair was so stupid (I loved Blair). Serena, honestly is the same - so naive but so mean. Dan… different person, although I do recognize the ego. Man, it was a ride, an amazing ride! You are a legend! 🥰
Please read 'The It Girl' series, the spin off of Gossip Girl books about Jenny! I never touched/consumed/was aware of Gossip Girl but I devoured It Girl!
Did I watch this show? Partially. The first season and the final. Have I read the books? No, I didn't know they existed. Will I ever read the books? Probably not. Am I here for four hours of pure, spilling tea while drinking my tea after a long exam period that still is going on strong? Yes. Will I regret not studying for 4 hours and 13 minutes? No, I will die on this hill that those 4 hours and 13 minutes saved me from pure insanity
