I love it when you make actual booktube content (your funny stuff is great too). You're always reading stuff that I don't see anyone else talking about. And "don't read a book you don't want to" is honestly amazing advice. I know I've historically read books that I 'should' read rather than what I want.
You're so good at acting, almost convinced me you're actually a booktuber! Honestly though, got some interesting books to add on my to-read list from this video :)
I love that whenever I see you posted something it could be anything, except the thing I suspect the most. Like I subscribed for book tube stuff, stayed for the funny stuff, and expected this to be another funny skit, but got blindsided by what I subscribed for.
I love authors that de-mystify writing. People like Brandon Sanderson and Joe Abercrombie (one of my favorites) show and tell that regular guys can write.
I have never read any noir books but now you have me interested in dabbling in the genre. Also, your videos are some of the funniest skits I have seen in a minute.
i love your book videos, your videos about sanderson inspired me to start reading again and i’m halfway through my second sanderson book now and can’t put it down :)
Thanks for the recommendations. Unless this is a meme? Glad to see you reading a VARIETY of books. That is a rarity in this space where everyone is too specific. The greatest thing I ever did with reading is branching out.
I started Highsmith with Ripley, and I've never seen anybody get inside the head of a psychopath like that. It's amazing. Check out Lawrence Block's Scudder P.I. books. They are amazing, too.
I like to imagine a connected universe between all of these videos, and I'm not convinced this "booktuber" character isn't just an alter ego of a certain water connoisseur...
Love these videos. Please make more if you have the time! Also Glen Cook is pretty straight to the point with the way he writes. I don't k ow many authors that still write that way
That Hitman story you talked about really reminded me of a short story in Cixin Liu's The Wandering Earth short story collection. Not gonna go too much into detail, but similar story beats, only in a scifi. Would make a really good episode of Love, Death & Robots.
I was ready to come up with some funny comment to go with the topic of your video, but then this just ended up being a nice round up of stuff! I don’t really know anything about any of these, but I’m glad you enjoyed some of them!
I have read one book this year. “The Dog Stars”. I have several more waiting - but I’ve been wasting all my time watching The Man and the Thing He’s tugging around.
Hey I think you would really dig the novels of Fuminori Nakamura. Japanese crime that is terse and brutal. The Gun, The Thief or his newest, My Annihilation are all excellent
Soooo…. The book “Hit Man” is similar to “Barry”. And it’s written by Lawrence Block? Larry Block?? That can’t be a coincidence can it? Also, now I need to read that book. I love “Barry”.
You’re the only “booktuber” who’s content I enjoy tbh. As a 27 year old dude, seems like the book tube is catered to young women, at least the popular ones that are recommended. Which I’m not hating on but it’s nice to see someone more like myself who enjoys reading and gives recommendations that aren’t just on whatever books are trending at the moment on good reads or tik tok
I haven't read him in years but Block is great. It's surprising he gets so little attention these days -- he's very good, very prolific, and was a big bestseller in the 80s and 90s. The Matt Scudder and Bernie Rhodenbarr series are both worth your time. For French noir, I recommend Jean-Claude Izzo - American suspense meets Feench existentialism, sort of.
I recommended the Silent Patient to my parents who both read it. They then tried to have a conversation about the book with me and I had to explain that I hadn't read it 😂 also, having just finished The Mad and the Bad is definitely blunt, brutal, bloody, all of the b's
Other book tubers: read latest popular novel, get bullied into reading one piece, does reviews of latest popular thing and also one piece, rinse and repeat THIS book tuber: absurdist memes, book review sometimes, more (brilliant) memes, hasn't read one piece, hasn't read latest popular books, reads and reviews obscure French novels, no one pleased, existential dread, square space ad, starts second channel, tries one piece, realizes it's too long, becomes alcoholic, does 9 part skit series involving murder of fake alias, more French novels, no one piece, starts wheel of time, never finishes, more alcohol, more existential dread, we see memes, we laugh at memes, it puts the French novel on its skin or else it gets the one piece again, second channel success, too much pressure, camp fire blaze ad, raid shadow legends, not the game app... HE is the legend of shadows this raid speaks of, challenges Daniel Green to duel, gets arrested, eternal existential dread, external 5 o clock shadow, checks reddit, becomes one with reddit, still gets downvoted, negative karma on reddit, destroys reddit with power of French novel reading and also memes, calls up wife for date, goes out to eat, reads French novel in public, sees longtime fan, longtime fan sees French novel, fan shakes head in disgust, wife quietly slips away to go home, fan not pleased, assaults long time fan, flees from scene, didn't tip the waitress, waitress was Daniel Green in disguise all along, runs car off side of cliff (not Daniel... M.C.T. goes off cliff, Daniel works full shift as waitress even though bit is over... genuinely enjoys it... this becomes his life now instead of book tube), back to cliff scene, cliff is very high, would have died on impact but stack of Sanderson novels breaks fall, meets Sanderson to thank him for saving his life, Sanderson has seen the memes, isn't pleased, Sanderson shakes head in Sander-disgust, worst disgust of all, challenges Sanderson to Sander-duel, no escaping wrath of the Sanderson... cliff hanger (no pun intended).... to be continued, continues with Sanderson in a cheap mask meant to look like Man Carrying Thing on M.C.T.'s channel, no one can tell difference, NORD VPN ad, Sanderson in fact a man NOT carrying anything, no more Sanderson novels, this is Sanderson's life now, title card: ten years later, unknown man in small countryside town in Italy, unknown man is sitting in corner booth at diner, his face obscured by open novel, it's a French novel, lowers novel, guess who is still alive?!, makes memes but in real life, people think he's crazy, gets arrested, gets released, 5 year revenge plot on Sanderson, takes back the channel, recovers from alcoholism, wife nods head in NOT disgust but delight!, they embrace, later wife finds stash of French novels in sock drawer, "I thought we were over this!", "not mine! Holding them for friend!", "don't lie! These are autographed and dedicated to: Man Carrying Thing!", doesn't know what to say, campfire blaze ad, gets arrested, title card: 6 years later, to be continued....??, no, no it won't be... And that's the story of how I met your mother...
*Spoilers for The Silent Patient:* Actually some booktubers like booksandlala didn't even realized that the twist in The Silent Patient was supposed to be a twist because they somehow realized from the beginning that the timelines were different. So I think the author actually did a great job.
He was making that malicious face right at the end of the video. I was so sure he was gonna make a comment about my life being an untold joke or something
If you ever want to read The Godfather of cartel books, check out Power of the Dog by Don Winslow. I hate when people talk about “genre” books as if they can’t be really well written. Well Don Winslow is an excellent writer than will make the literary fiction snob take a second look. It’s part of a trilogy. Highly recommended.
Don't let this dude fool ya - he doesn't need to roll his eyes and pretend he doesn't remember the name of the bookstore he goes to - upon death expiration he knows the bookstore he frequents - he does, this is true...... this is true................ this is true.
