Going into The Gunslinger, I am vaguely aware of the sheer scale and enormity of the story ahead of me. A friend of mine is incredibly excited for me to get into it as well, and speaks of it quite highly - and usually with a sly just-wait-and-see smirk on his face. That being said, he mentions (as you allude to in your review) that The Gunslinger is a difficult read. “Push through the first book” he says, “Drawing of the Three is when it really gets going!” This is was (indirectly) great advice, because I went in with low expectations and came out enjoying this book. Decently paced. Interesting characters. A plot that, while fairly straightforward, twists in all the right places. And an ending that has me unbelievably excited for what comes next.
Didn't like Shallan's chapters for the first 500 pages. Then I was going crazy for her chapters near the end. Still my least favorite but thats just because the others are that good.
Incredibles 2 is the second type. The villain literally has the same plan as the villain of Cars 2. The sequel focuses on the significant other of the first movie’s protagonist in both cases, too.
Honestly, discovering the speed up option particularly in shows or movies is such a blessing. If there is one eternal truth about shows or movies, it's that they have pointless padding and scenes one can skip. And on occasion I do remember to do that in YT videos too.
I am re-reading the series and am about halfway done with Oathbringer. The thing that annoys me most about Shallan is how she internalizes most of her development. It sorta takes place only within her own head, Pattern is there too of course. This kinda makes it feel like the plot doesn't need her. I also hate how the, seemingly obligatory, love triangle is forced on her, as tends to be the case for female characters.
I started watching this 3 months ago, and then paused it so I could read the book. & ohhhh my god I really loved the book. Now I’m back to watch this hot take. Thank you for your excellent work.
You should read Kindergarten Wars. It's a manga about an assassin who goes to prison and is assigned to work at a kindergarten dubbed "The World's Safest Kindergarten" that's the target of many other assassins. Her and many other Kindergarten staff are criminals whose job is to protect children for at least a year before they're ultimately released. The main protagonist is a boy-crazy woman who kills potential boyfriends for watching movies at 2x speed and skipping the credits.
