I finally read The Shining after I picked up Dr Sleep and figured I'd better read The Shining first. I was so heartbroken for that little boy at the end that it took me another year to start Dr Sleep. I just didn't want to see him hurt anymore. Powerful character building. If I get over to Chattanooga, definitely going to check out the Read Hotel! Wonderful video!

Whether or not you like Stephen King, you cannot ignore that the man can write. I love most of his books and have been reading him for years. I think you would've loved IT - except for one particular scene that we don't talk about. Thanks for the glimpse into the Read House. Fascinating!
@samanthaaiello

I have been interested in reading it for years. Anyway you could spoil it for me as a TW in a comment that has to be dropped down? It’s ok if you prefer not to. Thanks either way
@katblack394

@@samanthaaiello It's a great coming of age story where a group of kids ban together to defeat the Big Bad, but that one scene... I have no idea how to nest it actually, but if you google controversial scene in IT, you'll know what I mean. And that scene actually does happen - it's not a euphenism or some kind of symbolic insinuation - it actually happens 😳

Yea that scene makes NO sense to the story except for the fact king WANTED to write it. 🤮 I’d bet money after he is gone we will come to find out he actually was a pedo. I hope I’m wrong but no sane person would repeatedly put such content in books especially with no ties to the plot.
@MarisaAndChew

You NEED to read Dr Sleep. It's the sequel to the shining and it's not really scary but it's sooooo intriguing. It was written like 30 years later and it's written from Danny's perspective through the years. It's a brilliant sequel! The Tommyknockers is a scary book! I read it more than half my life ago and still remember a lot of it! Fairy Tale was AMAZING IMO. It is in both this world and in a "fairy tale" so you have a fair bit of fantasy but it's not really scary, it's slower and yet full of action. I cried during it a ton and thought I was broken 🤣🤣 I've been reading King since I was 13! I know you'll love these recommendations esp since they're not really in the horror genre, more mystery and reflective!
@alexandraroselyn

I just bought Fairy Tale!! I’ll have to look into Dr Sleep now thank you!!
@MarisaAndChew
@MarisaAndChew 7 месяцев назад
@@alexandraroselyn you'll love Dr Sleep IMO! King wrote it BC so many ppl asked him whatever happened to Danny! King was also an alcoholic when he wrote the shining but sober when writing Dr Sleep so while he's on point with the details we really see a genuine growth in writing and the characters since Jack, Danny's dad, suffered from alcoholism! 💞

@samanthaaiello
@samanthaaiello 7 месяцев назад
@@alexandraroselyn yes, I just read The Collector, and it was sooooo scary. Until it wasn’t, right at the end. I think that might be a thing with Middle grade. They have to give it a happy conclusion to minimize the scariness at the end. But the book was so scary up to that point.
@Jeanette_Medina
@Jeanette_Medina 7 месяцев назад
A middle grade book I read years ago that took me by surprise by how creepy and sinister some of the scenes were was Serafina and the Black Cloak. I couldn't believe there were kids books that were so creepy. 😅 It is in fact a series, and the setting of the first book is the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina.

@@samanthaaiello I just looked it up in Hoopla and it's there. Maybe I'll listen to it later today! Maybe some people don't find that Serafina book so creepy, but I did! As I'm a scaredy cat😅😆, and it being a kids book. I would not have dared read a book like that when I was a kid. 😂

I love both the book and the movie on their own merits. There are iconic moments from the movie that are not in the book. I like the ending of the movie, but I like how Wendy and Mr. Halloran are treated better in the book. I would suggest reading Doctor Sleep, and then watching both movies. It was cool how the movies are their own universe, and can be enjoyed on their own.

One of my all time favorite books. I hate the movie. I think people that love the movie never read the book. The story is about alcoholism and how it can take over a person. The movie had Jack crazy from The very beginning not a descent into madness. I’ve read the book 3 times. The sequel book Dr Sleep is very good as well and Stephen King wrote the sequel to his book. Danny is grown up and Halloran is back. Highly recommend. Great review.

I've been wondering when you were going to get to Stephen King. Have you ever read any Dean Koontz? He has some great stuff and I consider him more diet King or King lite. He's not quite as raw as Stephen King. Don't get me wrong I love me some Stephen King! ALSO I was just with my family in Chattanooga about 2 weeks ago to go to the aquarium and I thought at the time how cool would it be to run into you! I promise I'm not a creeper and I'm old enough to be your mother but your channel is one of my favorites!

Stephen King is one of my favorite authors and The Shining is one of my favorite books by him (so far), may even be my favorite. I can understand your point of Jack being disrespectful towards his family but I think that's not the main point of the book and I really didn't focus on that so strongly while reading. Yes, he doesn't treat his wife or little son the way they should be treated. But the book is much more than just that and I wish people realize that. The Shining is, in my opinion, Stephen King at hist best (even tho I haven't read all of his works, not even close).

As a constant reader, I humbly request that you read more of his books if you can, Of course you will not like them all! but I think if you liked the shining you will love more of his works 😊

Who told you it wasn’t scary? 😮 one of the scariest! The TV mini series of The Shining was very much true to the book, and I actually quite enjoyed it. If you wanted to watch it, I would recommend. It’s not perfect, but it was cool to see the book come to life. The Stanley Kubrick version is very different to the book.

If you’re really invested in Danny, I highly recommend Doctor Sleep! It’s a brilliant sequel.

Highly unpopular opinion here but my favorite Stephen King is Rage, which actually written under his pseudonym of Richard Bachman. It is very disturbing but also really beautiful in some strange dark way. I think he pulled it from publication and it’s out of print now.

Stephen King is a brilliant writer. He has some hits and misses, like anyone. When he was heavily into substance abuse were his worst years. But overall, he is incredible. And if you think about it, the telling of the descent into madness from the victim of that, is far more terrifying than any traditional haunted house type story. Try the Holly Gibney books, Mr. Mercedes onto Holly. Dark and twisted but the writing is stellar.

Read Stephen King’s earlier books….Carrie, Christine, Salem’s Lot…he’s amazing…and warped.

You should definitely read It, it’s peak Stephen King and has the “best friends banding together to fight the big bad”vibe. For me, it’s his best but also his scariest.
