I just finished into the wolves den, and all i can say, of anything i have ever read, or watched, including real videos, that fucked me up as this book. What really did it for me, is not only is just reading the words alone hard, but Jon Athan is SO descriptive, that your not only reading it, your watching the movie in your head, every detail, he really puts you there, and that made it not only harder, but even more terrifying. Im not a parent, but i AM the older brother 4, an uncle to 6, and i felt what kieth felt, what his wife felt, what the girls felt. I was left absolutely SPEECHLESS. And the ending made me so goddamn happy. Fantastic book. It was my first extreme horror book. I dipped my toes with Disseverment by ZC Kroll, then dived head first to into the wolves den

How "real" Jon Athans books are exactly why I love him and why he actually manages to scare me. He delves so deep into the most vile human consciousness and exposes what some people could be capable. Books like The Bighead by Edward Lee, or Playground by Aron Beauregard are lots of violent and disgusting fun, but that's never gonna happen. Into the Wolves Den as disgusting as it is, could exist somewhere
@ReadingWithMeg
@ReadingWithMeg Год назад
1000000% agree that’s hands down why Jon Athan is my favorite author. I don’t think anyone else can genuinely scare me other than him. I just read his new one and it was great as always.

It's not only horror that can have gruesome child trafficking subjects. In a episode of the Italian police procedural Insoector Montalbano about child traffickers, the chief is describing how the children are used for work and sexual slavery, the says that's not the worst. What could be worse? Used for organ farms. Ok it's fiction, but it's based on stuff that goes on out there

I had to put down Into the Wolves den. I don't get triggered easily but when the rich guy decides to pick her little sister and he walks away with her, I put it down. Literally that scene alone fucked my whole day up. The dude swallowing his own balls? Sure, go for it! But the little girl being subjected to this...nope. Can't do it.

Wow. Into the Wolves Den sounds graphic as hell. One book I have read that is rather graphically violent is Room 428. Although the violent/gruesome/gory scenes happen towards the end, it is some of the best gore I have read. There are even warning labels before both chapters when it happens.

These are not at all what I would consider disturbing but it is interesting to see what the word disturbing means to each person. I personally lean more toward Transgressive Fiction. Stuff like Lolita, We Need to Talk About Kevin, A Wolf at The Table, Father of Lies, Less Than Zero. Those to me are disturbing to the point where most people I know can’t even finish or get halfway through the book without feeling sick.

I think Into the Wolves' Den didn't affect me as much as it should of, because I read it a couple weeks after reading The Groomer, still 5 stars for me though. If you want a psychologically disturbing recommendation I recommend Secret Slave by Anna Ruston. Anna Ruston is a pseudonym but the author is telling an alleged story that happened to her while changing the names and locations. Anna gets into a taxi, and the driver doesn't drop her off where she is supposed to go, instead he takes her to his house, where she stays for 13 years alongside a polygamous family who lives in the house. Anna is abused for all those years and has babies against her will.

Just read "What Good Girls Do" on your word. It was very visceral. You could really feel the pain, sometimes very physically. Don't think I've reacted as physically to a horror book before. My issue with it is that I feel like the character of the neighbor is developed in a really strange, not entirely plausible way. I feel like the author wanted to take her from Point A to Point Z, and did so, but there should have been more psychological insight along the way, as she seemed to jump from A to F to M to Z. Maybe if it had been longer, but I get that sometimes you have to sacrifice development for a quick, driving thriller.
@ReadingWithMeg
@ReadingWithMeg Год назад
I completely agree with you and see what you’re saying. That’s sometimes the issue with short books because things are so condensed we don’t really get the full character development which could have been done in a novel length
@AWCMCultMovies
@AWCMCultMovies Год назад
@@ReadingWithMeg Yes, and "Into the Wolves' Den," being longer, didn't have that issue. Still a bit puzzled by the P.I. character (Greg? I forget) but the main characters all made sense. I agree with you about the level of horror in this... even as a jaded extreme horror fan, there was one scene involving the Pig guy (you know the one) that was too much even for me, although I didn't know that until later, when the results were revealed. Wow. Anyway, great video.
