My little brother, my bestfriend and I went on a roadtrip and I introduced them to this book with audible. My brother said he wasn't going to listen to it and just listen to his ipod. After the prologue, he said "dang it, now I'm invested." At one point during the trip, I didn't start it quick enough after getting into the car. My friend told me in no uncertain terms that "car time is book time." We ended up finishing the last 5 min in my driveway when we got back

My favourite part of this book is a part that didn't click with me until my third read through. It's the part when Kalladin has finally had enough, when the constant barrage of failure and death became too much and he had been ground down to nothing by despair and depression, when the only light left in his life (Syl) has left him and there seems to be genuinely no way out aside from an agonizing slow death somewhere on the Plains. Kall is stood on the lip of the Honour Chasm about to jump when he looks around one last time and sees a bobbing light in the driving rain. That light turns out to be Syl struggling through the wind, rain and the weight of the single leaf she is carrying. She floats up to Kall and hands him the leaf which turns out to be the same variety he intended to kill the slaver with at the start of the book, Syl then says something like "I'm sorry I was gone for so long but it took me a while to find this" and when he doesn't seem pleased with the gift of a poisonous leaf she says "the last time you had one of these you smiled, you tried, you had hope and you haven't smiled since you lost it. I thought if I brought you another you might smile again."

This book is so good, I loved everything, lots of people feel that Sanderson drgs out some scenes but I loved all of it, including the Interludes, I guess I'm just a sucker for world building. And the Sanderlanche, I legit read the last 200 pages of TWoK in one sitting because I couldn't put the book down, I'd close it to try and pace myself and the scramble on to the next page right after. Favorite book of all time. On to WoR, here we go team.

I enjoyed your blog very much! Please do the same for Words of Radiance! WoR is actually my favorite Sanderson book. Shallan doesnt get a lot of love, but I think I can relate to her more than Kaladin. Something about her total lack of self esteem and the way she deflects her feelings with stupid jokes rings true to me. I guess I can see through the facade she puts up more than some fans who get too wrapped up in the banality of her presentation, but her interior life is much more serious. She is quite discerning with an artist's eye but can delude herself (Kabsal) like any of us can. Her climactic confrontation with Jasnah in TWoK is as gripping to me as any battle scene. Stay tuned for more on Renarin. You'll be pleased I think with how his character is fleshed out. It will take longer than some other characters but it'll get there. I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on WoR!

William Vesey Hi! Nice to meet you, and thank you for the awesome comment. I’m already liking Shallan better in WoR, and I think the fact that she is more hidden from the reader in WoK makes sense for her character. I’m very interested in her arc, as I’ve been told Sanderson tackles some strong mental health themes with her as well. One thing I do appreciate a lot about her already is that she doesn’t follow many of the current “strong female character” trends. I find her much more nuanced than most. I really look forward to more Renarin! I will definitely be blogging my WoR experience. I wasn’t sure at first but I’m seeing that it would be a good idea. Again, thanks for the good insights! I’ll hopefully see you around.

I thought it was really sweet and wholesome to see Sadeus show a genuine interest in his old friend and his new favorite book. I thought that being a good friend in his private life and a ruthless slave owner and warlord on the job was a very interesting, layered juxtaposition in his character. One we don't often get in fantasy books. And then I had to suddenly throw all of that out of the window, lol. I was a bit disappointed by the betrayal, but what we got in return more than made up for it. Bridge Four's decision to rescue Dalinar's army, Kaladin and Dalinar finally meeting, Navani painting the giant glyph on the ground, Dalinar's satisfying confrontation with Sadeus... I really wanted to believe in Sadeus, but the book definitely works better with him as an antagonist.
@ToriTalks2
@ToriTalks2 8 месяцев назад
Sadeus' arc is definitely a roller coaster, lol! And I agree. I think we desperately want a different ending because we want better treatment for Kaladin and Dalinar's family. Bridge Four rocks.

Can I just say how BRILLIANT the concept of the flashbacks are?! Like, we're introduced to Kaladin in the middle of a battle, leading his squad, more legend than man; and then the very next chapter he's in a slave wagon?! I NEEDED to know how that happened and that desire kept me going up until the Honor Chasm (coincidentally RIGHT AFTER the first Kaladin flashback), at which point I was hooked for life!
@ToriTalks2

There are some GREAT Kaladin moments in this book, I totally agree. It was a great spot for a flashback.
@ninakrishnamurthy6674
@ninakrishnamurthy6674 2 месяца назад
@@ToriTalks2 I meant more in the sense that the flashbacks are a great way of elucidating a mystery in the character’s past. Normally, I don’t like flashbacks in books, but I LOVE them in Stormlight because of the mystery element. And Kaladin’s flashbacks are (in my opinion) the most dramatic example. We first see him at the top of the world and then it immediately cuts to him at rock bottom. And the whole appeal of the book for me- at least initially- was my curiosity about how Kaladin went from squad leader to slave.

Way of Kings is officially my favorite book in the Stormlight Archive (after rereading both it and the second book). Yes the second book has a good payoff for the build up, but we are still spending a good chunk of the book following Shallan and as much as I tolerate her as a character, I would have seriously wanted MORE chapters on Kaladin than we had already gotten in Words of Radiance. The reason why Way of Kings is just that much more enjoyable for me now, at a reread is because I can see it through the lens of someone who's also been through depression and I understand better the healing journey Kaladin goes through in this book. My reread of these books have invigorated my love for Kaladin as a character. At which point did I feel like I was invested in the characters? Kaladin in the slave wagons. I wanted to know what happened to him that he became a slave.

I got hooked pretty early actually. The thing was, I found out about Brandon Sanderson through his finishing the last 3 books of The Wheel of Time, which I'd been reading since 1994. So i already knew that I loved his writing and characterizations from what he did there. So, when did I get hooked on this series specifically? It's been a few years, but when I ask myself that question, the first image that pops to mind is Syl flitting around Kal's cage, shortly after it becomes obvious that she is more than she first appears, and has a ridiculous sense of humor! I could already tell I was going to love the Tinkerbell / Pan dynamic between these 2!

Honestly, I had almost the same ride of emotions roller coaster, though I really liked the Shallan chapters and the philosophical approach. Really invested in Dalinar and Kaladin. As always I love how Sanderson gives us little bits of ancient knowledge, just enough to keep me invested.

I really liked this book. The real question is really what character don’t you like. I liked the entire scene of Caladin (sorry for spelling, I listened to the audio book) really using his power in the rescue attempt. I was invested in it in the very beginning part with the harolds (I assume they were the harolds) I wanted to know what they were and where in the book they might appear. As it was an audio book I couldn’t flip back and forth enough to remember the three named Harolds in the beginning. I am a fan of mysterious obviously powerful but hidden characters so Wit was a favorite. Sil is a favorite. I also liked the captain who helped shallon in her arrival. I can go on. @@ToriTalks2 From what I hear he's one of the biggest names in the niche genre of military science fiction but he's done a little fantasy too. I discovered him through his Dahak trilogy (all three books of which you can find in a collection titled "Empire from the Ashes") but he's probably best known for his "Honor Harrington" and "Safehold" series. As far as David Weber fantasy goes there's his "War God" series and an unfinished (frowny face) series he co-wrote with Linda Evans called "Hell's Gate." There's so much more I could say about David Weber, but in an attempt to keep it short 1. He's tied with Brandon Sanderson for my favorite writer. 2. He has a small RU-vid channel. 3. The Honor Harrington series alone is 15 books long and counting (excluding the 2 prequel series, 2 parallel series, several books of short stories, and a couple of comics). Sorry if that scares you off but I thought I should give you at least that much of a heads up. Good news though! Most (all?) of the "Honor Harrington" books aren't Stormlight length. They're more normal novel sized. I'll stop there. Thanks for replying and reading!

I've only read The Way of Kings but I liked Elhokar, and was kinda like what the hell when Dalinar started beating him up. Like I could understand where Dalinar was coming from, but I ended up liking him less when he started doing that. Also I was so happy when Kabsal died, because it meant no more of those extremely boring scenes of Shallan and him talking about religion. This is the only Sanderson book I've read so far but I feel like dialogue is his weakest point. It just goes on for too long a lot of the time IMO

I was concerned I wouldn't, but so far I'm enjoying the re-read, but Sanderson's humour is so unfunny to me. I only mention this because I think it's a great contrast but I'm also re-reading The Blade Itself and I love Abercrombie's humour. Obviously, Abercrombie is more suited to my taste anyway so he has the advantage but what I noticed is with Abercrombie the humour speaks for itself but with Sanderson he tries to get other characters to reinforce how funny it is, which is why I think so many people take issue with Shallan. I like her despite that but it doesn't help.
