Couple of notes: - Dalinar is repeatedly clear that he’s no good at politics - Syl was dead when Kaladin stopped living to protect he had to return to his oaths to revive her (this is linked heavily with stuff that’s explained more subtlety about the past) - You’re not really meant to think Jasnah is dead (there is a clue at the time with her body vanishing - also Brandon shared a deleted chapter from her POV that was going to give it away early - he said he had to cut it for pacing reasons, though leaving some readers thinking she was dead was an unfortunate side effect) - I agree that Szeth’s resurrection is awkward though

I liked thinking Jasnah was dead. Made her return all the more interesting. I think it was better that he removed that chapter and kept the air of mystique around.

I just watched your blog again because I wanted to hear someone talk about these books again and you are clearly as invested as me! It made me go back and reread the last chapter of Oathbringer. In case you haven't noticed from TWoK and WoR, the last chapter is always from Wit's perspective, and I had forgotten the ending in OB. Aargh, I also forgot how emotional that last chapter is in OB and I cried. But it also made me realize how many things you miss if you haven't read Warbreaker. Hint hint... Anyway, thanks again, your comments are super entertaining!

I just finished words of radiance myself and the amount of times I said “JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER!” Is ridiculous XD happy to see I wasn’t the only one. Lift wasn’t at all my favorite in WoR but in her book, Edgedancer, I actually don’t mind her. It might just be the distance from our main cast of characters though. This book made me love Adolin a ton more. Kaladin and Adolin moments were great XD also Dalinar basically annoying the stormfather into becoming a radiant was gold. Loved it. Least favorite thing in the book for me is probably Shallan and Adolin as a couple because I don’t like Shallan that much XD her story is really good and she can do some really cool things but she herself kind of grates on me. So I too do hope we don’t do a love triangle with Kaladin, Adolin, Shallan. I’d be ok with Shallan being with neither of them. The spren and Wit are also top tier. Totally agree it was an emotional ride.

That duel was epic and I wasn’t sure how Sanderson could top it, but he does. I figured out pretty quickly that Jasnah and Syl weren’t dead, and I had a feeling that Shallan killed her mom. Also figured during the duel that Renarin might be a Knight. But at one point, I thought Shallan was taking storm form (what a bad theory that was). I love love love the banter between Shallan and Kaladin, and love how Adolin has matured because of his relationship with Shallan. I wasn’t a big fan of Shallan in WoK, but now I love her. And I’m with you in Lift- not a fan, but she’s also only 13, so….Also, I did like the Eshonia interludes in this book, but I agree, I’m not a fan of the interludes that much. But, I’m thinking about them, it reminds me of what Shakespeare does in his tragedies- he intersperses scenes of humor amidst all sorts of drama and death because it’s hard to sustain such intensity of emotion for that long both for the author and for the audience.

@williamvesey3679
@williamvesey3679 4 года назад
@@ToriTalks2 Shallan is my favorite. She was in Way of Kings also, which is quite a minority position based on comments I've read. She is "lucky" in that she has the surge of Transformation and can alter her view of herself and of how others view her. When she enters the Council room, she is becoming like Jasnah, but with her surge binding abilities this isnt just self discipline. I believe it actually affects how others view her. But she did take a gamble on Sebarial and win. I'm not sure if anything other than chutzpah helped her there. Agree that Jasnah's reappearance wasn't unexpected. Syl's resurrection was also no surprise. If Kaldin had been killed while she was "dead" she would gave been gone for sure. That's apparently what happened at the Recreance. Few if any Knights took up their oaths again. Since Elhokar was not yet dead, I think Syl was also not quite dead because she could still converse with the Stormfather. I would encourage you to read Warbreaker before Oathbringer. For reasons. Nice review!

Love your video because you focus on the right things and react like I did. I wish you talked about Kaladin finding Syl again. That was a pretty emotional scene. Like Jasnah's death it was super obvious to me early on that Shallan was the one that killed her mother and had some sorta mental issues and that's why acted like how she does. I absolutely loathed and still loath Shallan mainly because she was irritating and insanely artificial and stupid. She doesn't know how to self-introspect and solve her problems when she called herself a scholar and behaved nothing like it. Her scholarly curiosity and smart quips where so much cringe. So much that Sanderson made Kaladin point it out in the chasm. Her chapters (till half of the book) were absolute pain to read and took me 4 months reading the first half. Second half on the other hand was super fast paced because of other characters and doable in a month.

Its a great book but at the same time its a horrible book and this is the direction of Sanderson's writings. He's got amazing stuff in his writings but he's writing by committee, aka test readers. and that's a great way to avoid making something bad but it's also a great way of making sure something is not great. Great bits of media are almost always contested by people that think its too over the top, its too ridiculous, its too whatever..... Sanderson has made sure that he doesn't write something too... good. I want to quickly clarify that I do not think sanderson is bad, but he's just missing the magic of tolkien, jordan etc... He's writing to a formula, he's then testing an audience, and re writing..... this just is not a formula to ever write anything amazing.

So nice. I am.enjoying these blogs. Your pain is our enjoyment 😈 Thank you for sharing these video with us. However... Is difficult to see my favorite book to be so misunderstood. I know that is normal, each one has there own preferences. But has been more than a year since this video so maybe you have reread the book and confirmed that some of your conclusions were not fair. Jasnah "death" it was more about the impact to the characters than to fool us. Proof is that she is the third book cover character. SYL death is a representation of Kaladin failing to himself. And is a clue regarding the radiants of the past. That "betrayed" the world. Dalinar is not Political Strategist. He isa warrior. Has been show several times and ir has been confirmed that his brother was the King and the polítical savy brother. Like I said probably your opinions have changed or maybe not. But those points that you gave, are not really issues. I will continúe now with your oathbringer video. Take care 😁
@ToriTalks2
@ToriTalks2 3 года назад
If I had a dollar for every person who gets upset with me over my reaction to a Sanderson book. XD My opinions haven't changed that much. Having read more of the series, I am now aware of more of the storyline. The beautiful part of storytelling and reading is that everyone has their own individual experience. My experience of the book isn't "wrong" simply because it differs from yours :) My reaction to Jasnah's death remains the same. Because to me personally it was so obvious that she wasn't actually dead, the impact was greatly lessened. It was more of an irritation to me, and again, this is a personal opinion. Same with Syl. I tend to read more literally and take things at face value, that's just the way my brain interprets the text. I knew she wasn't actually gone, and it seemed obvious to me, so again the impact was lessened. When it comes to Dalinar being a poor politician, my incredulous statement about that was more of a "hello, Dalinar, this is so obvious. What's wrong with you?" reaction, and I think is closer to what you're getting at in your comment. There have been others who are surprised by my comment about his political blundering, but it wasn't that I expected him to be a good politician, I know he isn't. I was just incredulous that he was making such huge blunders. I never said that these points were "issues", they were a raw and personal reaction to the story. I'm not making any commentary on Sanderson's ability to craft or that he made "mistakes", because I don't believe that. The video is just my raw and honest reaction to the story as I read it. I hope that helps. Thanks so much for watching and for your comment!
