Old Dragon's Tale is a prequel to Mushoku Tensei published as a free web novel in Japanese by Jobless Reincarnation author Rifujin na Magonote. It follows the origins of Laplace as well as Orsted, Perugius, and some other key Mushoku Tensei characters, as well as giving very important lore about the six faced world, the man god (or hitogami), and much more - as well as being an interesting and compelling story in its own right.
I decided it might be nice to read out a full English translation of Old Dragon's Tale audiobook style, since I refer to the story quite often in my Mushoku Tensei analysis and lore videos. This is part 3 of the full reading, and covers chapters 5 and 6.

Oh man that was such a touching story. At this point in his life I have so much admiration for Laplace. He so hard working, honest, loyal and compassionate. Loving this story so far and as always I can't wait for the next part. As for what stories to do next time I don't have any ideas for any but you better known I'll be there 😁

So far on MT anime Laplace is painted as a malicious man who wants the humans dead or just the generic demon king, but these stories makes me think of him more as a person, perspective really change things

So basically the extroverted Dragon God adopted the introverted Laplace and turned him into an extrovert just so the now extrovert Laplace could adopt the introverted red dragon Saliad (This the correct way to spell it?). And so the cycle continues. Extroverts shall always adopt an introvert so is the law of man.

THE dragon god in this story isn't Orsted, it's his father, one of the original 6 gods. Orsted isn't even born until later in the story

@@NatalieXHunter Hmm, the curse I suppose? Pergius just drops Rostelina at a village where some stuff happends. I guess indirectly Laplace cause of the curse she has? Nobody said an extorvert can't adopt 2 introverts right?

I was never a fan of this kind of channel, mostly cus I enjoy reading by myself, but your voice is so relaxing. Also I can't keep but wonder, does Orsted know Laplace is his adopted older brother? I imagine it would change everything for him if he knew he still had a family that loved him. I hope Laplace somehow gets put back together in the sequel, I would love to see his reunion with Orsted, Elinalise and Salayakt, his dragon. He's also one of my fav characters, he would have won if he prepared sealing magic against FG, or if he, you know, didn't blow up Badi's head

Pretty Orsted knew, but sometimes somebody just betray's you in a way you can't forgive. Laplace betrayed the Superd in a way that they could never forgive him even though he had a goal that was good, this goal is partially explained in this video about Ellinalise of Natalie: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Jc_gyIIHdac.html, or at least theorised towards it. Laplace probably did something to betray everybody. Maybe he followed Hitogami not knowing what Hitogame would do. Since the Dragon God is confirmed dead pretty early on in the story, his death might have been the fault of Laplace. Which would explain why Orsted hates Laplace and why Laplace needs to be killed if they want to kill Hitogami. This is all speculation based on speculation that Natalie has done , pieces from the web novels that Natalie covered and some things I have read in the Light Novel. So do with this what you want.

@@GameOver-ol7ku I've read everything about MT (LN,WN, side stories, manga extras etc). Orsted doesn't hate Laplace, he knows who he is and what he's done, but I don't think he and Perugius know he was that close to their family. Demon God Laplace most likely used the superds to get rid of his curse and exterminate them because their superd eye could see his weak spot (that's how Ruijerd landed that decisive blow against him, incapacitating him long enough so Urupen could seal him). Also the only reason the demon god must be killed os because he holds one of the 5 dragon treasures needed to enter Hitogami's void. Orsted needs to kill him and Perugius to be able to face Hitogami

@@GameOver-ol7ku Also Laplace didn't betray the Dragon God, you'll find out if you read Old dragon's tale, or if you can wait, I'm sure Natalie will cover it. Before he dies trapping Hitogami in the void, he gives Laplace and baby Orsted 1 God core for each of them (one of the reasons they're so strong). After that he sends Orsted to the future and gives Laplace a mission, to develop techniques that could be used against Hitogami and teach them to Orsted, and then fight Hitogami together. Laplace could prolly be the progenitor of the sword styles and many other techniques

@@sharkmanro Ah somethings you have mentioned I had heard about before but completely forgotten like how the Dragon god died to seal Hitogami. But yeah I only know what I have read so far in the translated Light Novels and the videos of Natalie. In that case your theory about how things might have been different if Orsted knew the history of Laplace is interesting indeed. I guess it's something that will be covered in the sequel series whenever the author decides to write that, that is.

I can't read the official LNs for copyright reasons - this story is web novel only and I'm reading fan translations, so it's not the same as putting out something that competes with a licensed product, iykwim.

Hey Natalie, just a quick one but have you ever considered doing more "audio book" style manga readings? As most of the time when I search for something along them lines, they're just basically summerizing everything with the odd bit of animations. I've always struggled with reading due to adhd/add (been told I have it but they won't officially diagnose me) but with listening to your readings of them is something that is not just nicer for the experience as it feels like im actually being told stories from another place entirely but I actually take in the information a whole lot easier than reading. Sorry for the long comment, have a habit of over explaining but none the less, thank you truly for allowing me to experience something that I don't think I would of without you or your channel.

Reading out manga is a bit more difficult due to copyright reasons. Here I'm reading out a fan translation of something from the free web novel version of Mushoku Tensei, and not showing any official art (because there isn't any), so it's not quite the same as reading and showing something that a company has the licenses to sell. I don't really like risking copyright strikes and stuff - I know there are channels who do that kind of stuff, but personally I prefer not to take the risk. I do plan to do more readings of side stories from web novel type sources though, for Mushoku Tensei, Re:Zero, and other series like that.

@@NatalieXHunter Ahhh I see, I know it must be different with western comic's, their companies and copyright law's but it such a shame that Anitubers can't do the same sort of styling as someone like Comicstorian (Does readings and uses the visuals from the comic but without the text). Will definitely be listening to your readings of the other anime none the less as you're the best I've come across for both quality and community interaction without a doubt. P.S. If you ever do somehow manage to land a deal to read any manga officially through a company like Audible, you will have many loyal as heck consumers!

That was just where the chapter ended. I haven't been putting outro type stuff on these videos so as not to switch tone suddenly, but yeah, it probably seems a bit weird the way they just stop. The next one is up now though!

Paused at 25:31. I am growing even more confused about Hitogami's future actions and Orsteads curses and Laplace curses. WHY!? I am not sure if this was similar to your first read throughs reaction. But it just kindles my curiosity of how "current" Laplace telling a tale turns into the devil we know in the main series.

Since the Roxy spin off is an officially licensed manga, I can't really read that out without copyright issues. I am sticking to unlicensed web novel content like this, that will probably never have official English translations.

Can we get a full audiobook of this once it's done? Also: I want the EX stories for Re:Zero. I don't care as much about the alts since the events aren't cannon, but stuff like Al's backstory I'm super interested.

There are some side stories with interesting stuff about people like Al in that I may be able to read translations of. I can't really do the EX novels because those are official light novels that licensed English translations are for sale for, so it would be a big copyright issue, but some of the other side stuff that is never likely to be officially licensed in English should be viable.

I have a question, how do the 6 worlds in mushoku work? Were they all individual planets, perhaps dimensions within the same universe, or completely different universes within there own private multiverse (similar to how dragon ball has 12 universes)

Think of it like a cube. The sides/planes of the cube are the worlds.

They're laid out like the faces of a cube. There is more about the worlds and travel between them as the story continues, starting in the next part.

I would like to see sidecontent for re:zero that would work for people who has only watched the anime to get more context. I really like the mansion stuff, like "Rem's Latte Art".. Also the ones with backstory for Ana. :)

Well, I try, but with audiobook narration you normally go more low key than with voice acting - so it doesn't jerk people out of the story and just gives them an impression. That's also why I don't literally shout when characters are shouting, too, which I would if I was fully acting it - it's more like you try to give a sense of emotion but without actually playing all of the roles. So I just make little rawrs rather than going full ham on the dragon noises!
