Saw pantera 3 times in australia, dime's live sound was huge, fat, sharp and so sweet sounding.just killer.almost like 2 dimes were playing.!!amazing talent.
Flanger is key indeed! Thanks! Judging from the current listings at the end of the video this rig is more expensive than most modern boutique tube heads. All Randall's have gone up, for the most part, since the brand is defunct.
I think that if Ola and Eric joined forces we would get the best recreation of Dimebag’s tone and playing style. It would be interesting to see how to recreate this rig with current affordable equipment.
I'm sure you can get it with a traditional flanger that's easily accessible/affordable. I heard the Universal Audio Astra gets real close to the doubler/flanger though.
That chain effect is from a Lexicon rack unit. ( I believe that's the brand name.) . Its a rack unit with effects. It is also where used it for treadmills ( lol trendmills) Sorry, trendkill album. Tremelo effect on underground. They are super hard to find.
Lol I bought the Amplitube Dimebag collection for like £30 and it sounds spot on, all fully tweakable too as if you had the full set up in front of you. Really don't need to splash out in this day and age unless you are gonna be doing lead for a Pantera cover band and you need to sound just like dime.
Yeah with the prices of the gear that I highlighted in the video, it's hard to justify spending it all when you can buy a plug-in that is certified by dimebag's former guitar tech. You can also get some pretty stellar tones from other high end modelers that come real close.
@@eeyorebenji2836 gain 6, (100hz 1/4, +1.5db, shelf) (850hz, 3oct, +3db) (1.5k, loct, + 2db) (6k,1/3oct, +3db, peak) They changed depending on what needed per song, per venue, but that is a basic setting.
Dime split his signal to make the live sound way bigger, and the effect of having 2 guitarists. Watching all of the old bootlegs from the 90s just shows how great his tone was!
@@EricMorettin I'm taking a look at the old 80's MXR M-175. It's a rack delay and modulation. Hoping to replicate the Flanger/Doubler unit without spending $1700 What are your thoughts on that unit?
@@BanjoBoy-y4j I've never used one before so I can't comment. I'm working on another video that highlights modern flangers that either nail or come close to the 126 tho.
@@EricMorettin- I came here for this specifically. When you say he split his signal - do you mean into different amp rigs, or stereo after the amps to PA - or just doubled using the chorus / doubler…? Follow up: is that what the chorus doubler does, literally just doubles the signal? Thanks and sorry for the caveman questions. 👍🏼 Killer rig and video!
@@spencerarnold3810 he would use the flanger doubler as a splitter because it has stereo ins and outs! Darrell and Grady setup a wet/dry rig from what I recall. So some effects would go into one set of amplifiers and another set of amplifiers would be ran completely dry outside of the EQs.
I finally found an Aural exciter I'm going to buy it tomorrow but I just don't get what does it do. i couldn't hear any difference on your recording it's probably something that can be feeled live. I hope could share the aphex settings
When I hear Dimebag does the solo live for Strength Beyond Strength and 91 Moscow Domination solo its always harmonised how does he Harmonize the solos when it’s live?Apparently he uses his Whammy Pedal or His MXR Flanger.
@@EricMorettin I like the hyper-specificity of pre-EQ like this. You're essentially getting similar functionality out of that EQ as you would get from the tonestack on a Mesa Mark series amp. People always find those so hard to dial in, but if you understand that the B/M/T knobs are just pre-EQ and the Graphic is where you sculpt the balance of the tone afterward, you're golden. Being able to apply distortion to a frequency range is so powerful. OD pedals are cool, but man, Pre-EQ is so affordable and much more powerful in my opinion. I love it.
Seen dime performance here in Australia with pantera in 94 , to this day ive never heard a better live guitar sound, nor guitarist., long live the king absolute tragedy 😢😢
That would have been an amazing show to see!! From all the live Pantera videos I've watched over the years, I can only imagine how insane his tone sounded live given how great it is on tape.
@@EricMorettin the live stuff you have heard still doesn't do it justice tho, also Rex bass sound was absolutely incredible, that's the key, it's how Rex and dime combine their sound, live dimes sound isn't over bassy , the bass sound is dominated by Rex's bass dime does the highs and chugs
DO NOT ORDER FLANGER/DOUBLER FROM DBEffects! They screwed up the wiring of THE AC POWER cord going into my pedal so it died as soon as I plugged it in, and never took ownership of the fact. It's a shame because the working ones sound awsome. But awful customer service, considering fucking up the colours for live and neutral is a massive deal. I was going to send it back and not make waves, but the last attitude laden email, , and the vibe I get that they're money grabbing crooks, who probably wouldn't refund me even if I sent it back, means it's war! Most arrogant people who won't own up to their mistake even when I have a multimeter on it with photos! So, there's a video coming soon, with screen shots of emails, to show you how bad it could be. You make up your own mind, but til then, just stop! Buy a Mimiq instead!
No offense to your playing, but you can hear how much tone came from his hands. Such a wild concept to consider when you replace a person in an exact replica setup.
Man, it's like traveling back in time. Great video. I've always wondered what those Randell heads would sound like going straight in. I believe you've answered that. Cheers
@@EricMorettin yeah very. This is coming from someone who bought a Korg G3 in Jr high thinking it would get that sound. LOL BTW I had a juice goose power supply. From what I remember they were less expensive than the Furman's. In other words, it was the one I could afford as a kid. :) ....but that says a lot about their quality if Dime used them. Pretty cool.
Grady is the man brother....and as much as we all mis dime and wish he was still here, we have alot of ppl like ola and yourself keeping his spirit alive
Man this is the coolest video I have seen in a very long time, thank you so much for putting this together and sharing! With all of the technology and advancements of today I wonder what Dime would have moved on to gear-wise if anything. Fun to think about. Maybe Diezel? Or stay solid state and go Axe FX? Endorsements always sway and incentivize also lol. Long live Dime!! 🤘🏻
Awesome! Thank you for the confirmation on the silencer. I've heard so many conflicting ideas that he never used it in the loop, but, only the front, or vice versa. So, I always just had mine in the front. The reason why I never used it in the loop is bcuz of advice that it killed dynamics, but, that extra noise has gotta go. Thanks again Eric! Your videos are always pleasurable! Btw, kick freakin' ass on those Biohazard inlays!!
@@preston2636 really? Idk Preston maybe a silencer could refer to a noise gate as well. But, thank you for intruding in a conversation you don't belong in.
Nicccccccce. I've heard somewhere that he joined his Whammy and Crybaby together with a bit of dowel and glue and the tape on the neck pickups was so the thinner strings didnt get caught from divebombing 🤓
I think it might be good to profile these things on some software so that each part including the entire chain can be digitally archived. Lots of music history that could just disappear once it all breaks. As you also have all his original gear you could also settle the debate of what sounds best. Bill Lawrence USA Ceramic pickups vs Bill N Becky Wylde L500XL vs Seymour Duncan Dimebucker. Add in an EMG81 and Dimarzio X2N and you have a massive collection of rail pickups that are super high output.
The truth is Dime ALWAYS had a tube amp blended in with his Randall’s in the studio . Wizard tube amps are key to cowboys, vulgar , and trendkill stufio tones . Terry date and vinnie have told this over and over . You can’t get those tones with just solid state
This is very intuitive and the fact that you got gradient involved is pretty awesome. One of the things that guitar world also fucked up. Was dying bag actually never used any of the warhead amps he never liked them
@@ShannonLucasDrums really means a lot that you dig what I'm sharing here. Great guitars eh?! Would love another, or any USA Dime guitar, for the collection.
@@EricMorettin very cool im after those aswell all these years :D im not super interested in the settings to use them myself but im after the mystery yknow seeing those pictures is like hunting for atlantis for me xD
ive never heard of the grey wire bill lawrence vs black im guessin? any info on these? i have a 20 year old or so one with a grey wire. one of the metal mounting pieces is broke but im sure i could rig something up. may wait till i get an ml shape guitar before installing it.
@@EricMorettin apologize For my English. I meant, flanger has “input output” in the front, and input output in the back. I saw everybody use “in out” in the front. I would like know the difference if you use in out front or back
@@ale211850 Just like anything else that's in the loop vs in front of the amp, you going to notice a more noticable difference in response and tone. Modulation and EQ sound really good in the loop
He's used this rig live for clean and dirty. Studio would be a mix of a Roland JC120 or Mesa Mark 1. Randall Warheads were also used for cleans in the Reinventing The Steel era.
Everyone wants Dimes tone, but it doesn't matter if you can't play like dime. No matter what he plays through it sounds like dime. Even when he plays through the tiny marshall amp still sounds huge.
