Gardener here... You definitely need some kind of eyewear to use a grass trimmer safely, even if it has a guard on it. The string can fling little rocks or pieces of plants right at your eyes. I've gotten a few eye bruises over the years. Also, I recommend getting an electric one. They're so much better.
