PLEASE READ PINNED COMMENT!
This IS NOT a list of things I Dislike about my BMPCC! Just a list of things I regret not knowing sooner! Overall, I love this camera so far!
Here is a list of things that I REGRET not knowing about my BMPCC 6k and had to learn the hard way! I made this video to hopefully save you some time when using your BMPCC! My favorite thing is this video is the Power Solutions for the BMPCC! Off-Brand LP-E6 Batteries die at around 40%, but with these much larger batteries you get much more battery life!

UPDATE: With this battery you are best to go from DC out to Dummy Battery inside the camera. The voltage is correct for the Dummy Battery as some are saying that the camera shuts down due to the battery outputting 7.4v instead of the inteded 12v to the DC in. As I have personally had no problems with the batteries, I would probably recommend going from DC to Dummy battery. JUST TO BE SAFE. Forgot to mention: I DO NOT recommend getting cheap, off brand LP-E6 batteries off of amazon! They all die at about 40% and I’ve bought 6 different ones! So these new batteries are a breath of fresh air! If you’ve had better experiences with off brand batteries, let me know!

Chris Franklin good info Just checked out That battery It says DC 5-8volts But the blackmagic operates at 12-14 volts Do u experience any low voltage issues Or am I overthinking ,is all well
@ChrisFranklinJr
@ChrisFranklinJr 4 года назад
@@boounce211 So I've had no issues personally! BUT, checking through a few comments I've received, people are saying that you should use a dummy battery instead of the 2 pin just to be safe.

V mount batteries worked well for me because it helps balance the rig out when you have heavy cinema lens in the front and also helps power the monitor and the camera and all of your other accessories but again this is my personal preference , btw I love your video , keep up the good work

There's not much that I really dislike about this camera. All of my nitpicks can be solved with a work around! I do wish the screen articulated haha. But the RAW workflow is smooth. @@ChrisFranklinJr I’m upgrading from a dslr to either the Sony a7iii or bmpcc6k, do you think the jump is too much ? Should I start w the Sony a7iii? Also for shooting on-the-move type of things like vlogs or shows do you think this camera would handle well as I see it’s a more cinematic film type camera and doesn’t have continuous autofocus. I really want the 6k quality but I’m not sure if it’s practical to have it as my primary camera ? Helppp plz lol

Hey man! I did learn a few things! I got a question for ya. So when you are shooting in your "3200" native iso range, are you @ 1250 or actually 3200? I've heard somewhere to shoot in 1250 and the chart you're showing for the 3200 range starts at 1250 as well. I always just assumed that the native ISO was @1250 because of that. Thanks for the video and love your content man! Easy to watch, love the quality and super dope hat
@ChrisFranklinJr
@ChrisFranklinJr 4 года назад
Solid question! So your native ISO is going to give you the best dynamic range "For the ISO group". So as you stated, you enter into the upper ISO threshold when you cross ISO 1250. When you are shooting RAW, if you cross ISO 1250, you start exposing better for your shadows, and if you go into Post and try to adjust your ISO, the lowest ISO you can go is 1250 because you are now in that upper threshold. If you are shooting at ISO 400, in post, you can drop to ISO 100 or go up to ISO 1000, but you cannot go past 1000 because you filmed closer to the native ISO of 400 rather than the Native ISO of 3200. I hope that makes sense. I know that was a TON. TLDR: you have an upper and lower ISO. When shooting raw and below 1250, you have access to all of your lower ISO's in post. When shooting RAW and 1250 & above, you have access to all of your upper ISO levels. Native ISO of 400 & 3200 gives you the camera best dynamic range. (even though the upper level starts at 1250)

SSCM 527 my current favorites at the moment are the Sigma 18-35mm F/1.8 (great focal length for the crop sensor and it can get SUPER close, almost macro close) and I also like the Rokinon 85mm T/1.5! Super cheap but it’s great to reach things that are just a little too far away!!

Absolutely! just make sure you use a dummy battery with it! I would also look into the Powerbase Edge! It's a really good solution for small setups!

@@ChrisFranklinJr interesting, so the cam still wants to have a battery in their to operate? Can you use a real LPE6 battery or does that cause issues?
@ChrisFranklinJr
@ChrisFranklinJr 3 года назад
@@jamesdrakefilms Great question, if you want to use the battery in the video, ONLY use it through connecting a dummy battery to it, and NOT through the 2 pin adapter on the side. If you are using the Powerbase Edge, it comes with its own Dummy battery to plug in!

@@ChrisFranklinJr ok understood thanks for clarifying. one last question, sorry for the string here. I see those batteries you recommended put out 7.4v, but the camera has 12v in, does the dummy battery supply 7.4v into camera, and that's what it expects from a standard LPE6?

I didn't know you have to keep the base FPS low if you want to enable HFR/OSR. Why is that? As for the monitor, I wish Atomos would make a 7" version of the Shinobi!!!! Good call on the ISO Range. I learned that after doing a few shoots!
@ChrisFranklinJr
@ChrisFranklinJr 4 года назад
Driven Films to my knowledge, when you set an off speed shutter, it offsets based on the current shutter speed you have. So if you’re at 60 trying to offset to 120, it’s only a 50% reduction in speed rather than if you were at 24 offsetting to 120. Then that would give you much slower footage representing true 120 FPS. And a 7” Shinobi would be amazing!!

So clear, thank you! I’m coming from shooting only stills with a rather ancient Canon 1D and 1Ds, after having taken a bit of a break from photography. No autofocus cinema is a different world, but I will learn how to use my new BMPCC6k to shoot horse shows. It’s a steep learning curve and I appreciate helpful videos like yours.

Very useful. I am working on a channel (not restricted to youtube) and was debating the Blackmagic vs. the Panasonic Lumix G85. Those to seemed to be the most economical "point and shoot" alternatives under $2,000. (I am managing marketing, screenwriting, legal & copyright, musical composition, video/audio editing, so need to let go of control over some overly technical elements like mastering every element of cinematography.) Blackmagic seems to be the ticket for affordable 4k. For battery life, I was thinking of just doing the battery grip and charging a couple extra NP-F570 batteries for all day (8-10 hour) shoots. The 7 inch screen will definitely be added. Are you still satisfied or would you recommend continuing the research? Great video, very helpful btw.

You need to take a tour through the manual. The external power input is rated for 10.8V to 20V. The output of the battery you're using is 7.4V nominal, which the camera was not designed to use. Maybe it's worked for you so far but you really don't know how close you are to the actual lower voltage threshold at which the camera will work, which may change with temperature or camera settings. Short statement: don't power the Pocket 6K (or 4K) the way you're doing it.

hmmm, interesting. I m using the same method he is using, and now after months of extensive use, my camera doesn't turn on anymore via dummy battery when the ambient temperature it's below 55 F (luckily I live in LA so that's rare). It always turns on when I plug the camera with the Wall power no matter what temperature it is. But guess what, If I warm up the camera body then the camera turns on with that method he is using. Something weird is definitely going on. You seem to know some stuff about power and I was wondering if you could explain this weird side effect I'm getting with the camera. I mean you kinda did in the previous comment, but you got my attention when you mentioned that temperature might affect it. My camera also doesn't power anymore via LP E6 batteries when it's 55 F or below :/ So I know something is definitely off. At the moment If I work in conditions of 55 F or colder my only option is to plug the camera to the wall, or warm up the camera a little bit somewhere, turn it on, and don't turn it off or it won't power back on unless the body got warm enough by using the camera itself.

@@AxiA The RU-vidr is using the external power input. I you're using a dummy battery, then you are operating within the rated range for the internal battery. I would say that there's a component in the internal battery to camera powering circuit that fails due to temperature, since you say that you can always power the camera with the AC converter that comes with the camera. Since the camera is rated for operation between 32F to 104F, I would contact BMD if your camera is within warranty.

@@michaelandreas2177 Michael! Thank you so much for you comment! So when I use this method, I also keep the internal battery in the camera, and essentially I am charging the internal battery while using the external. Is this basically the same bad Idea or should i just switch to a dummy battery in total. (Which I have and use but did not mention in the video, forgot lol)

@@ChrisFranklinJr Ever so much more a reason to read the manual. It recommends against having an internal battery at the same time as a power source like this. I 1000% endorse that recommendation.
